I am applying with great enthusiasm for a graduate opportunity in your lab. I have an immense research interest in MRI techniques and its applications. On a quick note, I am a Radiology technologist (BSc, India) and completed an MSc in Medical Imaging (UK). My passion in MRI is its inherent ability in multi modal quantitative imaging. Clearly, the research contributions by your lab in quantitative MRI, measuring R2, R2*, susceptibility mapping, iron quantification on Multiple Sclerosis are my particular interest. I am genuinely curious to understand the contrast mechanism, to research, to quantify, to find a biomarker and develop a tool for clinical use. Over the years, I have initiated and acquired cross skills to fit myself in research. I got an opportunity as a PhD student at Ecole Polytechnique, Montreal. Indeed my motivation has increased significantly. I learned to initiate, collaborate, contribute and participate actively and to learn in a research environment. Mainly, what is expected from a research student?, how to communicate? Etc. I also learned basic Shell scripting to use Spinal Cord Toolbox, attended few MRI sessions at Functional Neurological Unit, Montreal and performed a literature review. My interest in MRI started when I first read the book “MRI, The Basics” written by the author Ray Hashemi. By the time I successfully finished my MRI clinical placement in Tehran University of Medical Sciences, I knew for sure that MRI would be the field I would be choosing to take on. What attracts me most about MRI is how beautifully scientist could create a technology that can take advantage of the magnetic moments of human body for imaging it without any harms of ionizing radiation. Although there are drawbacks to MRI, combining it with other modalities would be a more effective approach to an accurate diagnosis.
After graduating with my Bachelor’s degree, I continued to work as a staff MRI technologist. Even though I loved what I did and had a passion helping people, the lack of diversity within radiology and its limited room for growth bothered me. I decided to look into furthering my career and found an interest in Health Information Technology. Upon researching many different schools through the country offering an online graduate Health Information Technology program, the University of Michigan in Dearborn stood out to me. I aspire to exceed expectations in this field and work with doctors to access possible conditions. As a student who has always been passionate about science and excelled in these areas, I have had the opportunity to share my knowledge while assisting a physics instructor in the laboratory with experiments he plans to introduce in future classes and while tutoring struggling students in Chemistry, A&P, and Statistics. This has been a rewarding experience for me as I desire to see others succeed. One of the most recently new advances in radiology is the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI has been around for the past century. It was at first called Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and then it changed to MRI once there was an available image. Walter Gerlach and Otto Stern were the first scientists to start experimenting with the magnetic imaging. Their very first experiment was looking at the magnetic moments of silver by using some type of x-ray beam. The scientists then discovered this was by realizing that the magnetic force in the equipment and in the object itself. In 1975, the first image was finally created using and MRI machine. The scientists used a Fourier Transformation machine to reconstruct images into 2D. The first images ever use diagnostically was in 1980. This is when hospitals began to use them. At first the images took hours to develop and were only used on the patients that needed it most. Even though MRI has been around for a long time, it has advanced and has been one of the best imaging modalities recently (Geva, 2006).
“Motivation is the process whereby goal-orientated activity is instigated and sustained” (Schunk, Pintrich & Meece, 2008. As cited in Eggen & Kauchak, 2010, p.284). Motivation comes in many forms and can be divided into two broad categories - extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivators are external factors which can motivate a student; rewards are an example of this. An issue with extrinsic motivators is that the desire for the learner to participate often lessens, once the rewards are withdrawn (McCullers, 1987). On the other hand intrinsic motivation comes from within - learning for the joy of it - where the desire to learn leads to a higher level of knowledge, and is a reward in itself. Kohn (1996, p.285) states that research suggests, “Rewards actually decrease interest in intrinsically motivating tasks, therefore sending the wrong message about learning” (as cited in Eggen & Kauchak, 2010a)

Despite my commitment I had to this course, I was strongly discouraged by the absence of a guaranteed clinical placement which is a precondition for the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) approval. This would limit my hope of graduating as a Biomedical Scientist. Therefore, I took a difficult decision to withdraw from my course.

I understand our need for self improvement and I know now that I tend to agree more with the expectancy theory of motivation. As a leader of junior personnel I have learned that people are motivated in different ways. I can now figure out what their motivation is and provide them with a means to an end so that they will know what it is they are working for. This will cause them to work harder or more efficiently to achieve their own personal goals. So whether I am at home with my family or I am out at a ballgame it seems there will always be something I am doing or thinking that involves psychology. Psychology was a much bigger part of my life than I ever realized. It is involved in how I think, learn, behave, and interact with everything around me.
I am attending Baton Rouge General School of Radiologic Technology to pursue an Associates degree through Northwestern State University to become a licensed radiologic technologist. I chose this profession because I thoroughly enjoy helping others and making a difference in people’s lives. Radiologic technologists are expected to give efficient patient care while following the doctor’s order to proceed with the X-ray examination. Radiology is the most important role in healthcare because with out having X-rays, the surgeons could not see inside of the patient’s body to perform surgery.
