The Puritan life is based purely on sin. The Puritans believe that all people are sinners and are thus despised and hated by God. Sinners are subject to the worst punishments and suffer the worst torment. In Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel, The Scarlet Letter, several characters serve as models of sinners in agony from their error. Both Arthur Dimmesdale and Hester Prynne bear the punishment of their adultery, which evidenced itself in their daughter Pearl. While Dimmesdale plagues himself with guilt and Hester lives with the brand of the scarlet "A", it is Pearl who receives the worst penalty, suffering for a sin which she did not even commit. The village where she resides associates her with the circumstances of her birth, branding her with a reputation as difficult to bear as her mother's. Although many in Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter endure the results of sin, none have punishment equal to that of little Pearl's.

Pearl receives Chillingworth’s “very considerable amount of property, both here and in England” (Hawthorne, 1994, p. 178). She is not Chillingworth’s daughter or heir, but she receives it anyway. In the same way, one is given salvation through Christ even when he does not deserve it. An example of the fruit of Pearl’s transformation is how she, “at a marriageable period in her life, might have mingled her wild blood with the lineage of the devoutest Puritan among them” (Hawthorne, 1994, p. 178). Though Pearl does not seem to have many opportunities as a child, in the end God’s grace is clearly seen through her transformation as a

For my breaching experiment, I decided to break the social norm of looking at someone while engaged in conversation with them. Today, it is socially unacceptable and impolite to avoid looking at someone when talking to them. The background assumption for a typical conversation is that direct eye contact will be made more often than not; otherwise social norms are being violated. Avoiding eye contact during an exchange tends to dehumanize the person that is not receiving the eye contact. It is impolite and offensive, not looking at someone who is talking makes it seem as though the topic being discussed is unimportant. For my research experiment I would constantly talk to someone without initiating eye contact, or with my back facing toward the subject, not turning around or making eye contact until I had to ring up their order or make the drink for them. This research is important because it uncovers what happens when the social norm of
isolation and its causes through the stories of several unusual characters. To Kill A Mockingbird holds up a mirror to society and teaches valuable life‐lessons about prejudice, injustice and moral courage. Harper Lee skillfully paints a detailed picture of growing up in a small Southern town during the Great Depression. She uses Jean Louise Finch, to capture the hearts of the readers through her innocent eyes. Here the reader should remember that in many ways To Kill a Mockingbird. Although the story takes place over the course of three years, Scout learns a lifetime's worth of lessons in that span.
The book starts out with the main character Yossarian in the middle of World War II. He is in the Air Force, but he hates the war and believes people want to kill him. The squadron he is in has many problems but as long as Yossarian does his minimum of forty five missions he can get to go home. However, colonel Cathcart keeps raising this number of missions on his men. Yossarian goes to the hospital and tries to get out of the war by saying he is mentally insane but fails to get sent home. While he is in the hospital he writes letters but signs them as “Washington Irving” to fool the people who sensor the letters. The death of Snowden bothers yossarian for a good deal of the book. He is constantly disturbed by the idea of war and dying. When

Fundamentalist Christians believed that God created man in His own image, and that claiming mankind was simply an evolved animal was a direct assault on the Bible (Numbers, 1992). Furthermore, Fundamentalist Christians opposed Social Darwinism, and they established the Social Gospel movement, which attempted to create societal reform and alleviate some of the problems stemming from the Industrial Revolution (Schultz, 2016). This stood in direct contrast with Social Darwinism, as the Social Gospel movement tried to help those who were in need, as well as reduce poverty and prostitution (Schultz, 2016). Additionally, the Fundamentalist Christians opposed eugenics, as they believed that only God should determine who is and who is not fit to
During conversations, I have to put extra effort to maintain eye contact. One of the most important aspect of nonverbal communication is eye contact. The use of eye contact can be one of the most crucial and influential feature of our face. In America eye contact is essential “eye contact serves as a signal of readiness to interact and the absence of such contact, whether intended or accidental, tends to reduce the likelihood of such interactions”(Ruben & Stewart, 2015, 34). Eye contact shows that the person is interested in communicating with you, and has respect and appreciation for you. It gives the conversation a sense of flow. However the lack of eye contact can often seem disrespectful across culture. It is due to cultural comparison present regarding nonverbal communication. Every culture has its own altered
