MBA Admissions Essays - Beyond the Curve
Having worked in a constantly evolving sector of the economy, I realize the value of an MBA weighs heavily on a program's commitment to staying ahead of the curve. Although the classic lecture format has undeniable value, I believe for an MBA program to truly further my career, it must have something more. My career path has exposed me to many different aspects of the business world and I believe an MBA program should likewise consist of a myriad of course work and experiences. Since an MBA program will provide the building blocks for my career, I view an innovative and modern approach to learning as a necessity. Looking at traditional MBA programs that consist of marketing/finance/accounting fundamentals, I find the approach at your program to be much more expansive. Supplementing these essential classes with core courses in communications, organizational processes, and strategic management, makes your program broader than any other MBA program.

I have always set big goals, and had even bigger dreams. However, these dreams aren’t like those of some of my classmates such as becoming a movie star or a famous soccer player, but ones of curing cancer and providing the world with answers to scientific phenomena. Should the Gatton Academy provide me the chance to take the next step toward fulfilling these dreams, very little would prevent me from attending.
The Black Panther Party is an African-American revolutionary organization which emerged from the 1960s. Campaigning for equal rights amongst African-Americans within the United States, The Black Panther Party, (originally entitled The Black Panther Party For Self-Defense), sought the termination of the centuries worth of oppression and inequality that continued to persist amongst African-Americans which included social, economic and political suppression. Founded by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, The Black Panther Party would not only play a key role in the Black Power element of the Civil Rights Movement, but because of its revolutionary stance and tactics that were not only opposed to but acted upon against the unjust system of government under which Blacks lived, the Black Panther Party would later be deemed by then Federal Bureau of Investigation director J. Edgar Hoover as the "greatest threat to the internal security of the United States" (Jones, 366).
"The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense knew what they wanted. They were young. They were black. They couldn't be ignored. Their ten-point platform was just the beginning of an unforgettable period in the history of this nation's civil rights movement. By 1967 the Black Panthers had established themselves as a force to be reckoned with. Their ideas, their agenda, their fight for equality for African Americans, put these outspoken youth on the map of American politics." (Haskins) Almost 40 years ago, in 1966, Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale led a revolution that was driven in response to the oppression of black people. They sought to change that. Today, thanks to their fight for civil rights, extreme risks, and development of social needs, people around the world can enjoy some of their modifications, such as free breakfast programs. The formation and movements of the Black Panther Party were directed by the F.B.I, who sought to bring every party member down; as well as their radical alliances, such as The Resistance, (which kindled the rebirth of the party during hard times), and the brave women who joined the party, such as Afeni Shakur, stood up for their rights in a time in which Americas looked down on women as less than equals helped their cause.
An Italian American criminal organization that was started and created from the Sicilian Mob. All the members of the family generally considered it as Cosa Nostra. The Black Panthers, also known as the Black Panther Political Party or as the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, was formed in 1966. However, he contributes the rise of the Party with the rise of communism. On page 397 he says “the Black ghetto has been a more permanent phenomenon, although some individuals do escape it… Afro-Americans are distinct in the extent to which their segregated communities have remained controlled economically, politically, and administratively from the outside (Blauner 402).” This was a problematic to black youth in the 1960s and they wanted to take action. Bauner notes that the administrators who control the ghettos or urban communities in America are usually white-Americans who do not live in these communities and this contributes to the colonization of the black mind and body. He also argues that the cultural revitalization that was and is the aspirations of the Party continues to “play a key role in anti-colonial movement(s) (Blauner, 403).” This is anti-colonial movement is Black Nationalism or Black Power which calls on African Americans within the urban communities to cease back control of their very own institutions. These institutions include, but are not limited to schools, police departments, social services and businesses. This is exactly what the Party did. In the first draft of the Platform and Program of the Black Panther Party, their demands included
There are many different organized crime groups within all different locations in the United States, and they are all known for many different reasons. The Italian American mafia is a very well know organized crime group within New York City. After the death of Giuseppe Masseria in the Casellammarese War, Salvatore Maranzano initiated the organization of the “Families” in 1931. Maranzano introduced the now-familiar mafia hierarchy: boss (capofamiglia), underboss (sotto capo), advisor (consigliere), captain (caporegime), soldier (soldato), and associate; and declared himself capo di tutti capi (boss of all bosses). By declaring himself the capo di tutti capi he was breaking the deal he has made with Lucky Luciano. This later got Maranzano was

Between 1891 and 1920 about 4 million Italians arrived in the United States. By early 1900, about 500,000 Italians lived in New York City, in the most destitute social and economic conditions. Mafia groups in the United States first became lively in New York City. The Mafia was made known to by Sicilian immigrants who reproduced in the cities in which they established, as a ceremonial brotherhood made up of loosely connected, but otherwise autonomous and uncoordinated families structured hierarchically. Steadily, they evolved from small neighborhood jobs in deprived Italian ghettos to citywide and later on, international activities.
The term mafia is commonly used to refer to any large groups of organized criminals, such as the Russian mafia or the Japanese Yakuza, but the term was coined originally to refer to organized criminals of Italian descent. The mafia formed in Sicily as a vigilante group as the islands inhabitants did not trust the Spanish government. In the 1940’s, many mafiosi arrived in the United States after attack from the fascist regime of Benito Mussolini, although organized gangs of Italian-Americans were involved in the bootlegging business at the beginning of prohibition. “In the late 1920’s a bloody power struggle known as the Castellammarese war broke out between New York City’s two biggest Italian-American criminal gangs.”(Mafia, 2) In 1931, Salvatore Marzano and his gang were the victors, and declared himself the leader of the criminal underworld in New York. He was killed that same year by “Lucky” Luciano. Luciano then created a sort of government for the mafia, who would create policy, resolve conflicts, and allowed members to vote on decisions as a democracy. American crime families followed a strict hierarchy, lead by a crime boss who ruled with unquestioned authority. The process of becoming a mafia member was complicated. All potential mafia members required Italian heritage, and men often had to commit murder before becoming a full member. “Becoming a member of the mafia was meant to
The crucial importance and relevance of economics related disciplines to the modern world have led me to want to pursue the study of these social sciences at a higher level. My study of Economics has shown me the fundamental part it plays in our lives and I would like to approach it with an open mind - interested but not yet fully informed.
Ever since I was young I have always been interested in businesses and how they operate, as well as being fascinated by other languages and cultural differences. My passion for the subject expanded when I chose business studies and french, as part of my A-level education. Although these subjects are somewhat demanding, I find them extremely interesting. I believe that a degree combining both these aspects is the correct choice for me. I am confident that a course in international business studies and modern languages satisfies both these interests. I will be looking forward to learning about the international business world and I am relishing the thought of learning to integrate with other European countries. The idea of learning to communicate with other people across the world is something that has always appealed greatly to me.
In my degree plan, I realize that I will have to complete my general education classes including English, math, science, history, and the humanities. These classes have the ability to prepare me for the rigorous work that I will face within my core business classes. Program requirements vary based on each institution’s own specific curriculum. However common core courses in business administration programs are mostly centered on financial accounting, business law, economics, finance, organizational behavior, business management, marketing, human resource management and operations management . Through research of my career path, I realize that a Masters in Business Administration would be even more useful because it has the potential to attract potential investors. Median yearly wages for people with Business Management degrees range from $46,00-$115,000 . The duties of owning a fashion boutique include managing the daily operations of the store, all finances, and maintain the vision of the store
