Building Blocks
Known as the 4th largest standing natural gas distributor, Southern Union Gas serves nearly 1.5 million customers Nationally, and Internationally, for over 50 years. They have four divisions in the United States, which are:
Ø Southern Union Gas in Texas. (Corporate Headquarters)
Ø Missouri Gas in Missouri.
Ø PG Energy in Pennsylvania.
Ø New England Gas in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Focus:
My focus for this report is the “building blocks” of the Management, and how it shapes the organizational functions of the Missouri division of Southern Union Gas. James H. Oglesby is the COO and President of the Missouri division. MGE (Missouri Gas) serves approximately 498,000 natural gas customers in central and western Missouri, including Kansas City, St. Joseph, Joplin and Monett. MGE has about 700 employees to serve its customers in 155 communities throughout Missouri.
Before accepting the title of COO (Chief of Operations), he was Vice President of Operations. He was promoted to this position after being employed with the company for 34 Years. His effiecency and knowledge company has taken the organization to new heights.
Objectives:
James Oglesby’s objectives were to successfully achieve the critical mass needed to compete in a challenging, changing energy industry, and was successful in doing just that by offering electric and propane subsidiaries such as the newly opened PEI Power Corporation, a 25-megawatt co-generation plant which uses natural and methane gases to generate steam and electricity, to increase revenue and decrease competition.
This compliments the already effective natural gas operations. In doing so annual revenue has increased to more than 10.8 million dollars just within the first quarter results. While continuing to strengthen the core operations, in Missouri, he focused on propelling the organization to the forefront of the gas industry, and amplified the focus on business growth. Of course this built value to shareholders, and created a notable reputation of safety and quality.
Under new direction of new management, the Missouri division is expected to result in the annual addition of approximately 16.7 million in the next quarter, in pre-tax income to the company, due to new rates. The accomplishments of Oglesby show dedication to the rapid development, progression and outcome of Missouri Gas.

February 2002 (Newstream) -- Southern Union Company ("Southern Union") (NYSE: SUG) announces the promotion of James H. Oglesby to president and chief operating officer of its Missouri Gas Energy ("MGE") division.
Oglesby joined MGE in 1968 as a service technician.
Southern Union’s history dates back to the 1920s as a holding company for several gas utilities in Texas. Over the next sixty years the company expanded its gas utility operations and diversified into natural gas processing, exploration and production, refining, gas appliance sales, and real estate. This diversification strategy failed and in the late 1980s SUG divested everything but its natural gas distribution operations. In 1990 Southern Union was acquired by mobile phone company Metro Mobile, Inc; however, the resulting entity took the name Southern Union. The mobile phone operations would eventually be sold to Bell Atlantic and SUG re-focused on its natural gas distribution activities acquiring over 1.5mm customers through acquisitions in Missouri and the Northeast. In 2002, the company changed course once again decided to divest most of its gas distribution business and use the proceeds to expand into interstate natural gas pipelines. SUG acquired Panhandle Energy for $1.8bn in 2002 and its 50% stake in Citrus Corp, which owns Florida Gas Transmission, in 2006. Diversification continued when SUG acquired the natural gas gathering and processing firm, Sid Richardson, for $1.6bn. See the appendix for a map of Southern Union’s current operations.
The Wallace Group, Inc., is a company that consists of three operational groups (Electronics, Plastics and Chemicals) and a corporate support staff. The groups operate independently from one another, but also require the support of each others products on specific contracts. Since the companies are currently working independently the focus and direction is not well defined for the Wallace Group as a whole. The Electronics group is dependant on government contracts and is currently working on projects for the Navy and Air Force for future contracts. The Plastics group is profitable and a solid performer for the products in which it makes. There is also the ability of the Plastics group to expand and seize more of the share in the market. The Chemical group, which has seen a satisfactory performance in the past year is not living up to the Wallace Groups expectations and is in need of reform.

Thomas Andrews knew the ship’s flaws when he designed her nevertheless, Captain Smith knew of the collision between the ship and the iceberg. However, left all faith in the “Unsinkable Titanic.”
The Titanic was built to be unsinkable, with 16 watertight compartments to help keep it afloat. Many people called the R.M.S. Titanic “unsinkable”, because of how large it was. One night, things took the wrong turn. On April 15, 1912 , in the early hours, The Titanic was in the Northern Atlantic Ocean when suddenly it struck an iceberg. Just off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada, the iceberg ripped a tear in the hull of the ship causing tons of water to rush in. Once the crew announced what had happened, the passengers went chaotic. Everyone was screaming and trying to stay safe. Now, since The Titanic was supposed to be “unsinkable”, they had only put twenty lifeboats on the ship. The crew was trying to maintain everyone, but it was not happening. The crew had decided to let women and children on the lifeboats first. But, they were not even filling up half the boats.They had let First and Second class get on the lifeboats first, so that led to many Third class lives lost. As the ship started to sink more, the tilt of it became more apparent, causing more passengers to panic, but Captain Smith remained with the same orders , ‘Women and Children first”. At 2:20 in the morning, The Titanic took it’s final plunge into the cold water, leaving more than 1,500 lost their lives in the

Captain Edward Smith figured all the necessary amount of lifeboats would look “cluttered” on deck. The Titanic also had the prominent title of “unsinkable ship” because of that, the captain thought lifeboats wouldn’t be needed but indeed they were. The impact of the lifeboat shortage on the Titanic forced the captain to call the BirkenHead drill, caused men to dress as women, and brought passengers to participate in bribery.
