About a month after Mr. Shiftlet married Lucynell the old woman began to wonder how they were doing. She assumed her daughter was happily married. She walked into town and went to the market. She saw the stringy brown hair on a woman’s head and it reminded her of Lucynell. Surely she thought it could not have been her daughter for she was not here, she was happily married to Mr.Shiftlet. The woman looked lost and the old woman watched her from afar. The woman turned around and looked extremely scared. The woman was Lucynell and Mr. Shiftlet was nowhere to be found. The old woman ran after Lucynell who was terrified. The old woman asked Lucynell what was wrong not thinking about the fact that her daughter was mute. Lucynell fell to the ground
Mark Fossie and Mary Anne Belle were childhood sweethearts nearly betrothed at birth. While in Nam, Mark came up with a master plan to fly Mary Anne over to Vietnam to be with him. He spent almost all of his money to get her over but it paid off, they were reunited. The picture of a happy couple they spent most of their time together adn for a while things seemed very normal to them. All they had ever known was being a "them" and when they were together things just seemed to be right. How blindly we see things when we are surrounded by the arms of the one we love. She was young and curious and being the only women there she was very flirtatious.

About thirty years ago there was a young girl in love with her boyfriend. One day, he convinced her to take their relationship to the next level, telling her how deeply he cared. A couple weeks later, she found out that she had become pregnant, and decided it was best to hide it from him. They kept in close contact over the next few months, and he told her that they would be together forever. When her father realized that she was having a baby without marriage, he made her leave the house until she came back with a husband. When the baby girl was born, she decided to tell the boyfriend about the child, by bringing her to his house. He lived on a small farm right outside town and you had to pass over a small river on a bridge to get back to his house. As she opened the door, she walked in on him with another girl. Filled with anger, (pause) she gets in her car and speeds off. Now she could not return home unmarried and had lost her only love because of this one child. As she looked over at the baby, she is only reminded of her boyfriend and the image of him with the other girl. (tone increases) Finally, she reached the bridge, then slammed on the breaks. She got out and in a moment of rage threw the baby over the bridge to rid her of the baby girl’s troubles. Later that night, the police were tipped off about a murder at the bridge and came to find the girl hanging from the bridge.
Through out the Summer, I was back at home with a part time job at a very fancy restaurant and doing Summer school. When the fall came I was all set and registered at the University of Toronto where Mary had teached. No matter where I walked in the school something would remind me of her. I was in a nursing program and that first week I had seen the most beautiful girl alive, she almost looked exactly like Mary. She had long brown hair and big blue eyes, this girl was a one of a kind. I finally grew the nerve to go talk to her. " Hello, how are you?'' I asked. "Good afternoon, I'm good thanks.'' Just the way she talked made me think of her. "My name's Franklin Crabbe, yours?" She looked nervous then responded : " My name's Christina Pallas" Pallas? That was Mary's last name, I wonder if she knew her.
Mary Jane was a woman from California she was married to a man by the name of Dan and they had two children Brad and Stacey. They had to move to Seattle because her husband Dan had gotten a job offer at Microrule. When they moved it wasn't long before when Mary Jane found a job as a supervisor at First Guarantee Financial, this was one of Seattle's largest financial institutions. Everything had been going good for both of them. Then after twelve months of being in Seattle Mary Jane's husband was rushed to the hospital with a burst aneurysm unfortunately he never regained consciousness and then died. It was real tough on Mary Jane but she went on, she had to support her family as a single parent. So three years had gone by when Mary Jane accepted a promotion to move up to the third floor at First Guarantee Financial. The third floor was a place that everyone talked about they basically bad mouthed about them, they did not have a good reputation. They were known as the energy dump. The only reason why Mary Jane was taking this job was because when her husband passed away not all the medical expenses were covered so she had to pay for them and provide for the family. At the same time she wondered what had she gotten into. If she only knew what she had in for her?

This crying sounded like Cecile. Could she have really changed? We opened the door and ran in and hugged her. Surprisingly the door was opened. She must have went searching for us because there were two distinct footprints on her welcome mat before we entered the house and before we stepped on the mat. She really has changed. “You all better hug tight Vonetta and Fern.” I said with tears of joy. “My babies, my babies! I will never treat you that bad ever again. After the wife left to get Robert from the train station and returned, the two men were properly introduced. The husband at that point was lost for words and was not sure on what to say, after saying rude stuff earlier to his wife about the blind. After getting comfortable the husband offered Robert a drink, and after seeing what Robert likes he was a bit surprised about his choice in drink when he said “Bub, I’m a Scotch man myself.” And it even got him when he offered a tab or water to go with his drink. While they shared a drink, ate dinner, and then ended up back on the sofa they soon begin to watch television until the wife left to go upstairs to change. Little did the husband know him and Robert were going to have another bonding moment. When he asked Robert if he wanted to smoke dope with him, to his surprise Robert was up for trying it. He did not realize how laid back Robert could be. He did not know that the blind could have a fun side to them. On a cold night in December, Linda, a cutthroat investment banker, was walking home late at night from her luxurious office in Houston, Texas. The night was Christmas Eve, but Linda had to work late to finish up a big deal she was closing. It was lightly snowing outside, and as Linda liked snow, she decided walking the short distance to her apartment rather than driving would be relaxing. Her husband and two children were eagerly awaiting her arrival to spend Christmas Eve together as a family. As Linda was walking, she began to have the strange feeling that someone was following her. As she looked behind her, there was one man walking a few hundred feet back on the otherwise empty sidewalk. This frightened Linda a little, and she quickened her pace slightly. The man followed suit, increasing the speed at which he was following the nervous woman. Linda wasn’t quite sure what to do; this had never happened to her before. She turned around a second time, and felt a wave of horror pass over her as she saw the mans face, dark and fierce. She also saw something in his gloved right hand, long, silver, and shining dully in the dim streetlights. Linda knew that the object was indeed a knife, and now realized that she was in serious trouble. As she rounded a street corner, she began to sprint. The mysterious man rounded the corner, looking down, and saw a pair of high heels laying in the middle of the sidewalk. As he looked up, he saw Linda running as fast as she could, her bare feet kicking up snow. The man took off after her, furious that he had let her gain so much distance between them. Linda tried to open her purse in order to use
(pg 78) I actually enjoyed this short story. I really like the way Margaret Atwood laces the humor into her stories, like making fun of the blond receptionist and the other blond, and how they compete with one another.
