As Plato says “one should first describe who love is and what his character is and describe its effects.” (201e96) We usually say god is love or love is god in our daily life and we will see how far our definition is right. According to Diotima Love is neither beautiful nor good. This is not to mean that love is ugly and bad but something in between. In our daily life’s we usually encounter people who are too beautiful and not so beautiful. But the people who are not beautiful does not necessarily have to be ugly and could be something in between as a bit attractive. So, we can say at the beginning that, Love is not beautiful neither ugly but somewhere in between. Metaphorically, Love is also not wise nor ignorant. A wise person does not desire to know more because he already have the wisdom, at the same time an ignorant person does not seek wisdom because he feels he has it even though he does not. Socrates has Agathon confirm that when one does not have the thing that he desires and loves, that is when he desires and loves it. They agree that one "loves what he lacks and has not" (96). In Agathon's view of love that he expressed earlier, love is always of beautiful things. Therefore, if one loves what he lacks, then "Love lacks and has not beauty" (96), Socrates says. Agathon says this must be the case and no longer has any idea of his previous statements. If Love loves beautiful things, then it is not itself beautiful. Today some people say that love is blind, but in William Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 130” and Pablo Neruda’s “My Ugly Love,” they understand and see its honesty. Inside their poems they tell love like it is: imperfect and full of flaws. Needless to say, Shakespeare and Neruda had no apparent trouble conveying the true meaning behind beauty and love through their usage of reflection against positive and negative imagery, the usage of an orderly structure, and usage of sensory devices. If there is one thing that someone could learn through the work of these poets, it’s that beauty lies further than just the appearance on the outside; once someone else can realize this, only then will they discover the true significance that beauty brings to love.

Love is the name that human beings give to the desire for wholeness, the desire to be restored to original human nature. Love is important given the kind of creatures humans are; it is the only thing that can lead to happiness. Human beings innately find themselves as lacking – as incomplete and wounded. The Definition of Love Love by definition is an emotion explored in philosophy, religion, and literature, often as either romantic love, the fraternal love of others, or the love of God based on the definition found in The Encarta Encyclopedia. As I explored the definitions through the Internet, books, and articles, I noticed the definitions changed quite a bit, but yet had the same basic understanding. The definition I found in The Encarta Encyclopedia is probably the most simple and most basic. It refers to love in the whole aspect, which is Godly, fraternal, and romantic. All of which can only be defined by one word and that is love.

Sexual love is not eternal. This lust for pleasure will soon fade, but the part of love that is immortal, is a plutonic love. You can relate this theory to the birth of love that Diotima talks about. She says that love was born by a mortal mother and immortal father. The mother represents the sexual love, the lust for pleasure. The father represents the plutonic love that is immortal. Plutonic love is defined as a true friendship, the purest of all relationships. A true plutonic love will never die; it transcends time, space, and even death.
