In today’s world many things can resemble something from the past. William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and Bruno Mars’ “Grenade”, both show similarities and portray how love’s strength can affect people’s daily lives. By looking at the pieces of literature, the careful reader can see how both authors express similar ideas of love by emphasizing how people will do absolutely anything for someone they love. Love is an overpowering force that takes over the importance of many things. In Romeo and Juliet, the lovers have to defy what surrounds them in order to be with each other. While Romeo looks at her and describes how beautiful she is, Juliet does not know that Romeo is there listening to what she is saying. When they met at the party, it seemed that Juliet did not fall in love instantly, however when she speaks to herself in the balcony, she demonstrates the intense love that she felt for Romeo because she says that she will “no longer be a Capulet” (II, ii, 36). Although the family feud is the obstacle of Romeo and Juliet’s love, she is willing to give up their families in order to be together. The names Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet do not matter to her. She tells Romeo to forget that he is a Montague because the only thing that she cares about is their love. Since their love is so powerful, they will do whatever it takes to be with each other. Not only they will give up their families to be together, but they will also die together. When Romeo finds Juliet in the tomb, he thinks that she is dead because he never receives the information of the plan. He finds Juliet lying peacefully, and wonders how she can still look so beautiful, as if she were not dead at all. In the song “Grenade”, by Bruno Mars, there is a relationship with William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Like Shakespeare, Bruno Mars clearly provides a theme about what love can make someone do. The song shows how love is limitless because it says that there is nothing that will stop someone from trying to be with the person they love. In the chorus, he sings “Oh, I would go through all this pain/Take a bullet straight through my brain/Yes, I would die for you, baby” (18-20). He describes both Romeo’s and Juliet’s feelings for each other. He shows the desperation that the lovers are going through and that they will do absolutely anything for their love to be possible. They would die for each other to be together. In addition to the relationship about dying for each other, in the song there is also a relationship towards the love that Juliet wants. As the song describes all the things that Romeo and Juliet would do for each other, it also resembles her idea of giving up their families.
