Pride and Prejudice
Introduction
Jane Austen was born in 1755. She was the seventh of eight children.
The family was well educated and affectionate. Her father was a
clergyman and they lived at the rectory in the parish of Steventon in
Hampshire. She wrote several novels one of which was ‘Pride and
Prejudice’. It is full of romance, drama and humour. The novel was set
in pre 1914 in a society were women had no vote, were unable to voice
their opinion and had no income of their own so they had to rely on
their husbands.
‘Pride and Prejudice’ stands upon the affirmations of love and
marriage. Jane Austin believed that the perfect relationship existed
between two people who respected and loved each other. She illustrates
the idea of a perfect relationship and also demonstrates how some
relationships are not ideal.
I am going to explore the variety of attitudes towards love and
marriage in regards to chapters one, nineteen, thirty-four and
fifty-eight.
Chapter One
The opening sentence immediately links money and marriage without
referring to love.
“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in
possession of a large fortune, must be in want of a wife.”
It is a very bold statement and very presumptuous. In those days
people were more concerned with status and money rather than love,
that’s the way that society operated. If you were married to somebody
of a high class who had good connections then people would admire you
and respect you. This is what Mrs Bennet believed. Attitudes towards
love are based on material wealth not em...

his actions and Elizabeth now understood him.
This is Jane Austen’s portrayal of the ideal marriage.
Conclusion
Jane Austen has created a variety of relationships so show us that it
is important to marry for love, respect and common interest. Beauty
fades so don’t go for physical attractions and money is not
everything, although it is important it is not necessary. Darcy and
Elizabeth, Jane and Bingley will be happy together because they love
each other and that’s enough for them but people like Mr Bennet and
Mrs Bennet will never be happy because they don’t know each other and
neither one of them makes an effort to make it work. Jane Austin was
trying to get the point across that things change. Not everything
starts of perfect but with a bit of love you can get there in the end
and things will be ideal.
Throughout the 1800s, women across the world began establishing organizations to demand women’s suffrage in their countries. Today, there are still women in countries fighting for their right to vote. Some countries who’ve succeeded in the mid to late 1800s were Sweden and New Zealand. Once they expanded women’s suffrage, many other countries followed. Like Sweden, countries first granted limited suffrage to women and other countries approved to the full national level. Additionally, there were quite a few countries who had taken over a century to give women the right to vote, Qatar being a prime example. Although the fight for women’s suffrage varied in the United States, France, and Cuba in terms of length and process, each effort ultimately
In the years after 1870 there were many reasons for the development of the women’s suffrage movement. The main reasons were changes in the law. Some affecting directly affecting women, and some not, but they all added to the momentum of Women’s campaign for the vote.
As the 19th century progressed, women were quite successful as they were able to get the civil rights such as to vote in local elections. However, some women wanted the right to vote in parliamentary elections. These women joined a campaign called the suffrage movement. I will explain all the factors of why women didn’t gain the right to vote before 1914 in this essay.

Many times, when we see a person for the first time, we automatically judge them, whether we realize it or not. In Pride and Prejudice, this is exactly the situation between the two main characters. Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy have very different families, lifestyles, and attitudes. They both formulated their opinions of each other rather quickly and this really hindered the beginning of their relationship. In our lives this happens many times as we judge first without even getting to know the person. Luckily for Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, even though they despised each other, time eventually changed their minds and hearts, resulting in an unimaginable love story.
little, if nothing at all based on a good love match. This can be seen
Marriage in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen In pride and Prejudice there are many different marriages that occur. There are also, various, different incentives for these marriages. In comparing Elizabeth and Darcy's relationship with, Lydia and Wickham, and Charlotte Lucas and Mr Collins the reader begins to see the different reasons in which the partners marry. The reader can base their views on the priorities of each relationship. If a reader was to read of a marriage based on financial security like Mr Collins and Charlotte Lucas' they may have preconceived ideas about how the relationship will work if love is not involved, they may form prejudices on the marriage based on their own beliefs and ideals.

Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen’s famous novel, is, in large part, a study of marriage. It is an interesting novel for Austen since she was never married. The social culture of Austen’s day made marriage a crucial aspect of a woman 's life. A women in that time was dependent on a man for money and social standing. Synonyms for marriage are union and alliance both have very different meanings. Marriage as a union implies a fully joined couple. A marital alliance suggests that marriage is an association for mutual benefit such as money, social standing, or physical desires. Relationships and marriages play a crucial role in the novel, Pride and Prejudice. Some of the important relationships shown in the novel are out of pure love while, most are together for the sense of security, money, and convenience for the both of the partners. Each character holds a different perspective on love and marriage. A handful of characters even become involved in each others’ “love life.” In this particular time period, the parents of the daughters purposefully try to marry them off based on money and looks. In this case, we see Mrs. Bennet play the role of the crazy mother who wants her daughter to be married off to any man with money. Mrs. Bennet does not care one bit if they do not love each other, her one care is money money money. Mr. Bennet doesn’t push the marrying off of his daughters because of the fact, that he feels indifferent about his marriage with Mrs. Bennet. The marriages in the book are either hits or misses.
