I was born into a non-Christian family. We thought we were Christians, because we used to go to church on Sundays. But we didn't know about the Bible verse that says we must be “born again” if we ever want to see the kingdom of God (John 3:3). Even if we'd heard it, we never stopped to think about how we could get “born again”. I got a job in a music store. Christine was a sales clerk there. She was one of the sweetest, most honest people I had come across up to that time. And she was open about being a Christian. I could see there was something different about her, and I was sure it had something to do with her Christianity. Her self-assurance, peace, and love for Jesus Christ made a strong impact on me. When I left the music store I got an office job. A young woman there, named Ruth, reminded me of Christine from my former job. It wasn't long before I found out that Ruth was a Christian too. I think these two young women were the only “born-again” Christians I had ever met up to that time, and they both stood out in a wonderful way. Ruth used to ask me about my beliefs, and I would ask her about hers. Whenever I asked her a question she didn't know the answer to, she said she would ask her pastor and get back to me with the answer. She always did. On the other hand, whenever she asked me a question I couldn't answer I would try to bluff my way through. I made some stupid comments to her at times, and looking back I don't know how she stopped herself from laughing at me. I guess it was her respectful Christian upbringing. I once told her that everyone in the world had been Roman Catholic until the time of Martin Luther. Ruth had no trouble demolishing that argument. In fact, she had no trouble demolishing all my arguments. Ruth was a happy person. She was always doing something exciting with her church youth group while I was doing little with my friends at all. Even after we both left that job, she kept in touch with me a few times, and made it clear that my spiritual life concerned her. Then events started happening in my life that kept me wondering whether I was missing something by not being a Christian.
Throughout history, women have not been viewed as equal to men. Therefore, much of their opportunities have been limited. Many women never attended school because they were not allowed, thus never getting the same education as men. This lack of education forced most women to stay at home and maintained the household. When women would try to make something of themselves, there would be groups of men who would harm them. There was so much violence toward women because they simply had no rights. Men, often, did not care if they hurt a woman because they did not view them as equal. Men thought of women more as property then a person. Woman in the United States began to stand up for themselves and demand some rights. One of the first organized demonstrations of this was in 1848 at Seneca Falls, New York. Because of this and many other movements throughout history, women in the United States have been able to get jobs today that would have be considered a man’s job in the past. Even though many women throughout the world do have rights today, there are still some women in third world countries that do not have any. Many of these women live in countries that have a government which do not view them as equal. These women are still refused an education, endure extreme violence and are forced to stay at home. Therefore, although there have been great advances within the woman’s rights movement, there are still many more obstacles to overcome.
The thought of women having equal rights has caused major controversy throughout American History. Women have fought for their rights for many years, wanting to be more than a wife or a maid. Women’s Rights Movement was an effort by many women around the U.S standing up for themselves. Feminists like Charlotte Perkins Gilman had a big impact on the movement by writing stories and articles, she spread awareness by writing these. Throughout this Movement women got the right to vote, and many more opportunities they were not offered before.
The Christian faith has been a major legacy left by my great-grandfather. My great-grandfather started a Spanish church in Blue Island, Illinois, and raised his family in the ways of the Lord. He taught his children the importance of having a strong foundation in the Word and the importance of coming to church. His legacy is evident in the lives of his children and grandchildren. Even when at times different family members have walked away from the Lord, their strong foundation as children has often times brought them back to God. My grandma and my mom both had similar experiences, and if it had not been for the strong foundation in the Word of God, God only knows where they would be today and if I would even exist. I grew up in church, and have a personal relationship with God, that will enable me to be apart of the Christian culture at Southeastern
Driving under the influence is extremely dangerous. Those who drink and drive tend to have an increased risk of car accidents, highway injuries, and vehicular fatalities. However, there are countless ways to prevent drunk driving. Professor David J. Hanson at the sociology department at the State University of New York states that “designated drivers have saved nearly 50,000 lives and spared many more thousands of people from suffering injury from drunk driving. It is a proven fact that almost 30 people in the US die every day in a motor vehicle accident involving a driver impaired by alcohol.” Every accident caused by drunk driving is one hundred percent preventable.
Love is a very complicated feeling. When someone is in love they tend to do things they wouldn’t normally do, they usually block out the rest of the world and only focus their attention on the person whom they have feelings for. In the poem “On the inside” from the book The Realm of Possibilities the author Megan, explains the love triangle she is currently in which gives the idea that falling in love is inconvenient when the person you are in love with is oblivious towards your feelings. The author portrays feelings of sadness which implies that the author’s point of view toward love is negative. This is further elaborated when Megan describes all she does for her best friend, when her best friend doesn’t realize she’s the one who Megan is
Drunk driving is an issue that effects many people across our nation. People do not realize the affects alcohol can have on the body and mind that slow decision making while driving. This issue begins in the home. Children see their parents, or other adults figures, have a beer or a cocktail and get in the car. Thus, making it seem like it is acceptable to drink and drive. “One in three people will be involved in an alcohol-related crash in their lifetime” (MADD).
Hawaii also creates the perfect location for a love story. Mark O’Bannon guides young writers that choosing a setting is nearly as important as the story itself. He encourages people to think about the genre and the message it portrays (O’Bannon 1). Hawaii offers the perfect answer to everything screen writer Wing wanted to drive through to viewers. Hawaii is charming with white beaches, beautiful flowers, and stunning sunsets. All of these natural beauties offer the ideal equation to a heart touching love story. Although it is stereotypical, Hawaii is the perfect location to host such a unique story.
Recent statistics have showed that in almost every 90 seconds a person is injured in a drunk driving crash, and everyday 28 people die as a result of drunk driving. Although some state that they have had a little to drink and they think that they are capable of driving back home “safely”. Not only do they know that legally they can not pass a Blood Alcohol Content of 0.08 which is a little more than a 12-ounce glass of beer or alcoholic beverage. In most cases of a drunk driving accident the dr...
A New Literacy Age in American Society Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart depicts a futuristic American society dominated by media. Technology is their most precious process, everything revolves around their äppärät. Everyone is ranked based on their attractiveness and wealth. Most people want to stay young and live longer. Any written artifacts are almost non-existent, and literacy is not the same as before.
Again I was raised neutrally with religion. As a family we didn't attend church. My grandparents are all Jehovah's Witness's, although both my father and mother ended up being disfellowshipped from the congregation. Since not having any religious influence being taught to me, I was open to explore different religions for myself. I learned about several different religions. I know now that I am a Spiritualist, rather than Christian.
Oates’ novella is a love story between Officer Dromoor and the Maguire women, both Teena and Bethel. It is a tale that morphs a love for justice into one that represents a love for feeling supported. The Maguires are scorned by the people of Niagara Falls. Teena, even more so after the gang rape, is perceived as the town ‘whore,’ drug addict, and a bad parent. John Dromoor’s mere presence on the family creates a mutual respect, or love, amidst such difficult circumstances. Years after the events at the Rocky Point Park occurred and Dromoor is no longer in the Maguires’ lives, the story ends with Bethel’s husband telling her that she “looked so lonely, suddenly” (Oates 154) after
Drunk driving can be very deadly. Yet many people drive while under the influence everyday. Drivers who are drunk are blamed for the loss of as many as twentyfive thousand lives in highway crashes each year and hundreds of thousands of severe injurys.
...ollowing in my sister's footsteps, I began learning from her experiences. We tread lightly around the subject of the religion these days. Thankfully, there are no wild debates at the dinner table on holidays. We respect one another's beliefs and agree to disagree about them. She often tells me, "You should come to my church!" when I call her seeking sisterly advice or needing a sympathetic ear. I have attended her church and admire how she's strengthened her parish and community. That's more inspirational to me than any Sunday sermon - as she is one who sincerely lives in the word, even when it's difficult for her.
These prevention methods are simple ways to inflict greater penalties against those who believe that driving under the influence is not a substantial deal, because it is. In 2014, almost 10,000 Americans were killed in driving under the influence accidents, making up about a third of all traffic related deaths that year (“Impaired”). This number excludes the people involved in driving under the influence accidents that survived, and the family, friends, or communities affected. It is heartbreaking to observe that people today are selfish enough to think only of themselves and what they want. Placing oneself behind the wheel of a vehicle while under the influence is bound to come with consequences eventually. The best way to avoid these consequences is to take oneself out of the situation to begin with. Finding a ride home with a sober driver, calling a cab or a friend, or simply staying where you are at and find a place to crash for the night nearby are the easiest ways influenced driving can be avoided. Nonetheless, there are people who require more action to be taken. The lengthening of time spent in jail, the increase of fines, and the use of ignition interlock devices will force more of these people to rethink their actions and abstain from operating a vehicle
I can surely say that I won't be able to forget about our love story. You were the most beautiful thing that could ever happen in my life. The most tender feeling I have ever endured. Having you in my life and having the opportunity to meet you brought warmth, love, and passion to my heart and soul. The fact that we decide to go separate ways has filled my heart with coldness, sadness and fear, not knowing if you would ever come back to me and perhaps you would forget me bring tears to my eyes.
