What pops into your mind when you hear the word love? When people hear the word love many people think of romantic love. The word love has many other interpretations such as loving your neighbor, loving of one’s nation, and loving of God. People need to avoid thinking about something as important as love so superficially. Both John Donne’s “The Canonization” and “The Sun Rising” use metaphors to deal with whether the nature of love and whether it is really mysterious. While Donne’s “The Sun Rising” focuses on romantic love, his poem “The Canonization” delves into the many facets of love beyond the mere romantic such as being consumed by love, dying by it, and being reborn through love.
“The Sun Rising” by Donne is an extended metaphor about how the sun has human characteristics and performs human actions and emotions. Both narrators in “The Sun Rising” and “The Canonization” are analyzing actions of their objects. In “The Sun Rising,” the narrator is talking to the sun. In the opening lines of “The Sun Rising” and “The Canonization,” they have a similar tone because in “The Sun Rising,” it is telling the sun to stop worrying about them, to stop watching them, to mind its own business and in “The Canonization” when it says “For God’s sake hold your tongue, and let me love;”(1) it is saying to “shut up.” Both poems open by wanting to be left alone, not having the other person (in “The Canonization”) or the sun (in “The Sun Rising”) bother them, telling them to leave them alone and go bother someone else. A use of figurative language in “The Sun Rising” is when Donne says “ I could eclipse and cloud them with a winke”(13). Even though both poems have different tones, they are opposites of each other when they talk about love, so they are a paradox of each other.
Donne uses a lot of literary devices in his poem. The main literary devices in his poems were his use of metaphors and symbols. Both poems discuss the topic of love. In “The Canonization” Donne uses a lot of bird imagery. He uses eagles, doves and a phoenix in “The Canonization”. By using bird imagery he is showing how the gloomy side of love can be just as powerful as the romantic side of love. “The Canonization” explores that love is multifaceted and does not just have to be romantic, while “The Sun Rising” is an upbeat more romantic poem.

These two poems can each be summed up by one line from each. In "Do not go gentle into that good night" the main point of the poem is "Old age should burn and rave at the close of day" (2), and in "Death Be Not Proud," "death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die" (14). When one looks at these two lines, the essence of these two poets disagreement on death is typified. Thomas believes one should "not go gentle into that good night," while Donne believes death is the "Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery" (8).

In arguing against mourning and emotional confusion, Donne uses a series of bold and unexpected comparisons for the love between himself and his lady. Donne makes his first surprising analogy in the first stanza when he compares the approaching separation of the lovers to death. "he speaker compares his parting from his lover to the parting of the soul from a virtuous man at death. According to the speaker, "virtuous men pass mildly away" (line 1) because the virtue in their lives has assured them of glory and happiness in the afterlife; therefore, they die in peace without fear and emotion. By this he suggests that the separation of the lovers is parrallel to the separation caused by death.

The first stanza shows a wide range of fantastical language with the intention of drawing the reader slowly and steadily into the hazy, dreamlike setting. Along with the words like ?fantasy?, ?fables? and ?dreams? come affectionate phrases that effectively show us that the poem is meant to be addressed to a lover, ?Dear love? being the most obvious example. Later on in the poem, the language shifts from drowsy and steady to more intense and complicated, yet less passionate and more doubtful. Donne?s choice in the last stanza to utilize fiery words like ?torches? and phrases ?light and put out? and ?thou cam?st to kindle? depict a sense of overwhelming passion, as uncontrollable as fire. Donne doubts that he can control his lover to continue loving him as fervently as in his dream, which is why his dream lover is ?an angel? while his lover in reality is compared to fire.

It is apparent in both poems the tone and language is dramatic, as this is typical of Donne’s writing style. His use of imagery and symbolism effectively present his experience of love. However it is the structure that builds up the emotion throughout the poems as Donne starts in each poem to refer to a seductive love, then in conclusion realises the importance of true love. ‘The Good Morrow’ clearly shows evidence of this when at the beginning Donne states he ‘suck’d on country pleasures childishly’ and in the end understands that a ‘Love so alike that none can slacken, none can die’.
He compares his relationship with his love as “stiff twin compasses” and other similar comparisons to describe their unity (Dunne 26). Like a compass, they always seem to be working cohesively as one unit. It could have the same theme as “The Passionate Shephard to His Love” by Christopher Marlowe, the theme of love conquering all. They both seem to have an idealistic view to the relationship as well, as the shephard in Marlowe’s poem insists that his love “will all the pleasures prove” if she were to go with him (Marlowe 2). The word “love” has always caught attention with its meanings. There have been many definitions used for this word throughout history, beginning with its start during the ninth century. With the examples of current use(from Urban Dictionary, Twitter, a student survey, a song, and a film) it is obvious that the definition of this word has been lost in translation in many different ways. Looking closely at the synonyms, along with the history and current use, the true definition is clearly seen through a usual worldly haze.
Although Donne employs iambic meter, where a stressed syllable follows an unstressed syllable, the first line opens with a bang by starting with a heavily stressed first syllable. The use of sonnet form immediately stands out as an another curious aspect of the poem. Poets traditionally wrote sonnets to express one's love for a woman, but in this poem Donne addresses God as his lover. Sonnets also usually changed subject or tone in the ninth line, and here Donne uses this tactic to surprise the reader. In lines seven and eight, Donne describes how he has wondered from God, but in the ninth line he reveals that "Yet dearly I love you" (9). The first quatrain of the poem begins undermining the idea of death by personifying it. Death is personified by Donne throughout the poem as he challenges death by stating that it is not the “mighty and dreadful” aspect of life that people are afraid of, but as an escape from life where people can find peace after death because “nor yet canst thou kill me” (Donne 1100). He argues that death does not really kill those whom it thinks it kills to further beat death into humility. In the opening line of the poem he uses an apostrophe, “Death, be not proud..” to begin with a dramatic tone to argue with death as people’s adversary (Donne 1100). Death is given negative human traits, such as pride, but also inferiority and pretense.
