Love; a word that has become commonly overused by people. Does anyone really even know the true meaning of love? It is used so much in today’s society that the actual meaning and purpose has been taken away. Love, in its most basic definition, is “a feeling of warm, personal attachment or deep affection” (“Love”). Love goes far deeper than just simple affection and attachment, though. There are phases of love that people completely undermine. There is phase of falling in love, sometimes known as the “honeymoon phase”, the phase of disillusionment, and the phase of creating everlasting love. One in particular was called Agape love. It meant “everlasting love.” In fact, it was originally used to show the “unconditional and self-sacrificing love God had for humans through Jesus” (“Agape”). It was thought that people should practice this use of Agape love within their relationships with others. After people have gone through the stage of doubt and disillusionment, they have already become capable of loving their partner for who they truly are. By this stage, couples learned to love themselves, love their partners more passionately and create strength and companionship. It is the stage of love where feelings continue to deepen for years and a seemingly unbreakable bond is created between the two people. I have been in a relationship for over three years now. Most people would think that, because of my age, I couldn’t know what true love is. I agree I have more to learn about love, but I am experiencing real love every day. My boyfriend and I have went through the honeymoon phase. It was all giddy emotions and happiness all of the time. We then went through the disillusionment stage. We became more appreciative of each other after learning and becoming more aware of each other’s flaws and failures. Now, I feel as if we are on the path of unconditional love. My boyfriend recently has started attending college in North Carolina. It has been an constant struggle of sad days to happy days, but it has only deepened our love for each other and has made us appreciate that the time we share together is precious and sensational. We crave more time together, one more second than what we had gotten. Every day we are growing and maturing together. The love that is in our relationship includes the feelings from the honeymoon phase, the respect and acceptance of our flaws from the disillusionment phase, and the deepened, passionate love that is on-going to this day.
