Usually when people think of love they think of a strong feeling towards a person or thing. Love however, has a different connotation and denotation that separates how people view the word. For me, the distinction between the connotation and denotation differs based on how I was raised and the experiences I have had. The things about love I’ve learned growing up have portrayed to me how feelings and emotions associated with love can’t be accurately defined, a person must feel it for themselves. Love has a very complex upbringing. According to the Historical Dictionary of American Slang, by J.E Lighter, love started out being defined as “affection; friendliness; the love of God.” Originally, love had no relation to feelings towards other
The meaning of love cannot be defined in one sentence or even in 16 pages. Every human has his or her own definition of what love is. People define love by their own experiences whether as true love or ending in heartaches. In Raymond Carver’s short story, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, he describes what love is, by depicting what it is not. He executes this by portraying the experiences of four people, while using their dialogue and setting in the story to describe how something so beautiful as love can easily become an awkward and repelling subject to discuss.
Everyone at some point of their lifetime have experienced love, whether they are aware of it or not, whether they have loved someone, or were the ones loved. Love is defined as “a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person.” However, I realized that there is no one universal definition of love, everyone has its own definitions and ideas of what love really means. Love is unconditional, meaning that is timeless, without any conditions, everlasting. Humans tend to love the ones we are surrounded by, we love our family members, our true friends, and in some cases our significant other. It is a feeling shared between a young girl listening to her grandfather’s old stories. It may even be the strict rules a parent enforces,
When I was a child, I often asked my mom what the love is. My mom always replied me with smile “ You will know when you grow up.” I looked at my mom’s eyes for the answer, but I could not find it. The question of love I asked my mom about had confused me for 20 years; However, now I get the answer: Love is simple. I now can see the love clearly between me, my young brother and parents. I was so stupid because I thought the love might be some kind of magic, but no, love is just a simple way how my family to express what “I” means to them. This is love that my mom warns me put on a coat in a cold morning; this is love that my father frequently ask me about how my school is going everyday; this is love that my younger brother shares his ice cream with me in a hot summer afternoon. To others I am just a normal college student who is living in a normal life, but to my family, I am the only thing they care about. Love does not need any thing to decorate with but a simple greeting or a simple
Take a breath and open your mind. If I asked you “what does love mean to you?”, What comes to your mind? Well, there are multiple forms of love, and ways people perceive it. Many people learn love through how they are taught, how society sees love and, the definition of love. Love is more than just a four letter word that is overused and vaguely understood.
There is no scarcity of material on the subject of love. It is an important part of how society has come to be what it is today—a gem that has continued to exponentially grow in value over the centuries. Yet despite all of the paragraphs upon paragraphs of discussion that comes along with the topic of love, it is hard to place a finger on what “love” actually is. It is not tangible—visible for anyone to see. It is known to make the rational irrational—known to make the strongest of individuals waver or the seemingly all-knowing blind to the truth. The idea of love can be described at times kind and peaceful, but at other times vicious and cruel. So, which one is love? Or is love an ever-changing concept? Needless to say, there are numerous suggestions or beliefs concerning the idea. But amongst many of the
Love by definition is an emotion explored in philosophy, religion, and literature, often as either romantic love, the fraternal love of others, or the love of God based on the definition found in The Encarta Encyclopedia. As I explored the definition by means of the Internet, books, and articles I noticed the definitions changed quite a bit, but yet had the same basic understanding. The definition I found in The Encarta Encyclopedia was probably the most simple and most basic. It refers to love in the whole aspect, which is Godly, fraternal, and romantic. All in which can only be defined by one word and that it love.
Love is defined as the feel of tender affection for somebody (Encarta Dictionary). In the olden days, love had always been bounded by many rules set by the court of love in France. These rules are both approved and disapproved by different characters of the era. The wife of Bath both approves and disapproves the 4 laws through her 5 lovers; Sir Gawain both approves and disapproves the laws through his Knight’s honor code. However, in our globalized world, people consider love as liberal and not dictated by laws.
Love is defined in the dictionary as an intense feeling of deep affection. However, love is an emotion that cannot be simply defined. The reason is because there are many different kinds of love such as love for a parent or sibling, love toward a friend, love exchanged between romantic partners, love had for a specific hobby or activity, and love for a child. Other words that have been used to describe love are as follows – euphoria, joy, depression, restlessness, anger, and fear. To further differentiate between the different varieties of love, we must look at the components of love. Eros is the physical, sexual component of love. Agape is loves spiritual and altruistic component. Philos is the love of deep and enduring friendships. If all
Emotions of love are of course a very natural and important part of life. But it is the ideas of what love is and should be that vary in large degrees. These ideas, which begin shaping us from a very young age, are crucial to how we approach future intimate relationships. How were your images of love and romance were formed? When love is modeled in an unhealthy, impractical way it is misguided and will result in unrealistic expectations and ultimately unhappy relationships.
Once upon a time, we have all been asked the question that always seems impossible to answer, “What does it mean to love someone?” and then we sit to ponder on what love really means. How do you know when it’s real? How do you know what it’s supposed to be like? You can sit there and wonder about it all day, asking an endless amount of questions for hours upon hours, trying to give love a definition,
Many people have different perspectives when it comes to the topic of love. The word love has been tossed around by everybody and not very many people really understand the true meaning of love. There are some exceptions, but I think this is especially true for teenagers and young adults. I might be one of those people who do not fully understand the topic of love, but I hope to better understand the topic of love and its true meaning is this course.
Love is the underlying motive behind a lot of our actions. Love is the reason why we form special bonds with others and why some create a life together. Yet few of us are experts at love. When we are asked to define love, most of us are perplexed by dissimilar discernments of the intangible neurological condition. We thus start to feel inept. Still we have an idea of what love is and most would agree that it is more easily experienced than defined. In the short story “Beginners,” Carver fruitlessly attempts to define love through each of the characters’ distinct insight and encounter with love.

Often, many portray romantic love as a beneficial and desired emotion because its experience can lead to prosperity. While observing love from the outside, only its sentimental aspects in relationships are apparent, such as a couple holding hands or . Therefore, those not experiencing love believe it is a picture-perfect emotion, creating its potent allure. However, although love appears devoid of conflict, love’s effect induces feelings of fear, anguish, and carelessness which consequently govern our interactions with peers.
