Virgil said, “Love conquers all things, let us too surrender to love”. Most people have experienced the overwhelming feeling of love, thereby understanding that in the end, nothing will stand in its way. Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Yzierska’s Bread Givers, and Hurston’s Their Eyes were Watching God, and dorm life show that love truly conquers all obstacles. In The Scarlet Letter, love conquers the pressures of society, while in The Great Gatsby, love overcomes the test of time. In Bread Givers, love triumphs over major differences caused by a wide generation gap and in Their Eyes were Watching God, love overpowers the forces of nature and disease.
In The Scarlet Letter, Hester’s love for Mr. Dimmesdale overcomes society’s pressure and keeps her from incriminating him as her lover. When the people call for her to “‘Speak; and give your child a father!’” (Hawthorne, 74) she still refuses to give the name of the father of her child. “‘I will not speak!’ answered Hester, turning pale as death…‘And my child must seek a heavenly father; she shall never know an earthly one!’” (Hawthorne, 74). The power of Hester’s love gives her the strength to restrain herself even when the crowd entreats her to help her child, if not herself. Even when Dimmesdale, her lover, pleads with her to speak the name of her lover, she does not. “‘If thou feelest it to be for thy soul’s peace…I charge thee to speak out the name of thy fellow-sinner and fellow-sufferer!’” (Hawthorne, 73). Hester’s love for Mr. Dimmesdale is so powerful that even his appeals cannot sway her in her determination. Hester’s love was so mighty that it persisted over all obstacles.
In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby’s love for Daisy allows him to overcome time, to find her and resume a relationship after college and five years away in the army. Because Gatsby loves Daisy so strongly, and believes that she loves him as well, “He wanted nothing less of Daisy than that she should go to Tom and say: ‘I never loved you.’…after she was free, they were to go back to Louisville and be married from her house--just as if it were five years ago…” (Fitzgerald, 116). Gatsby wants to “‘fix everything just the way it was before” (Fitzgerald, 117). Gatsby loves Daisy so much that time means nothing to him: he thinks that their relationship has resumed right where it had left off five years before.
In The Great Gatsby, Gatsby functions under the illusion that Daisy is perfect and is living in such distress because she was forced to marry Tom due to Gatsby being away at war and being poor. This illusion leads Gatsby to spend his entire adult life pining after Daisy and cheating his way up the social and economic ladder in order to win her over. Gatsby believes that Daisy will someday come back to him because she loves him so much and they will live happily ever after together.
In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, Mr. Dimmesdale’s greatest fear is that the townspeople will find out about his sin of adultery with Hester Prynne. Mr. Dimmesdale fears that his soul could not take the shame of such a disclosure, as he is an important moral figure in society. However, in not confessing his sin to the public, he suffers through the guilt of his sin, a pain which is exacerbated by the tortures of Roger Chillingworth. Though he consistently chooses guilt over shame, Mr. Dimmesdale goes through a much more painful experience than Hester, who endured the public shame of the scarlet letter. Mr. Dimmesdale’s guilt is much more damaging to his soul than any shame that he might have endured.
This article will examine the perpetuation of racism in Canada by the mainstream news media by examining three elements: (1) the impact the news media has on mainstream society (i.e. how it shapes thoughts and behaviours), (2) modern manifestations of racism, in particular subtle forms of racism, and (3) the use and impact of racial discourse (such as racial stereotypes and the framing of criminal and deviant behaviour as a racial problem) on society. This article argues that the news media not only reflects and reinforces racism in society through racialised discourse, but also creates and perpetuates subtle notions of bias and exclusion.

She uses pathos to appeal to her audience’s emotions by pulling on their heartstrings. She uses the logos to provide support to her article which she means to convince her audience by use of logic, reason, or statistics. She uses euphemism to make something harsh or distasteful sound in a somewhat positive way. She uses ethos to convince her audience of her credibility. Daisy is not pure and perfect like Gatsby thought she was in the past. From Gatsby's illusions of the past preoccupying all his thoughts, he forgets about the key dimension he exists in which is the present. Although Gatsby was persistent on reliving the past, Gatsby vaguely lived for the present. This is apparent when he cancels his biology by leaving home, changing his name, and leaving his heritage behind which was not done by following the past.
According to Petrosino (2003: 10) hate crimes can be defined as "..the victimisation of minorities due to their racial or ethnic identity by members of the majority. " (p. 4) Hate crimes are also known as bias-motivated crimes because the crimes are motivated by a bias towards a person or persons including but not limited to those of a different gender, ethnic background, religion, or sexual orientation. Hate crimes are quite serious and have severe and long lasting-effects for the targeted victims. Due to the severe nature of the crimes many countries have strict laws in place to punish offenders. Hate crime is not widely discussed in Canadian society because it has not been a prominent issue until now. “..The extent of the problem in Canada was limited to a small number of persons, such activity could create a climate of malice and destructiveness to the values of our society (Cohen Report, 1966:24). He was impressed with what she represented, great comfort with extravagant living. Gatsby knew he was not good enough for her, but he was deeply in love. “For a moment a phrase tried to take shape in my mouth and my lips parted like a dumb man’s”(Fitzgerald 107). Gatsby could not think of the right words to say. Daisy was too perfect beyond anything he was able to think of. Soon Gatsby and Daisy went their separate ways. Gatsby has many issues of repeating his past instead of living in the present. A common example of this would be his ultimate goal to win Daisy back. He keeps thinking about her and how she seems perfect for him, but he remembers her as she was before she was married to Tom. He has not thought about the fact that she has a daughter, and has been married to Tom for four years, and the history there is between them. The reader cannot be sure of Gatsby trying to recreate the past until the reunion between him and Daisy. This becomes evident when Nick talks to Gatsby about how he is living in the past, specifically when Nick discusses Daisy with him. “‘I wouldn’t ask too much of her,’ Gatsby ventured. ‘you can’t repeat the past.’ I said. ‘Can’t repeat the past?’ he cried incredulously. ‘Why of course you can!’” (110). It still has everlasting effects to this day. Most of the products we use today are made quickly by the process of mass production. Today, people work on assembly lines using power-driven machines. People of ancient and medieval times had no such products. They had to spend many hours of hand labor to create very simple objects. The energy came from their muscles. Eventually some advancement occurred when people began using animals to help with the work they used to do alone. The Industrial Revolution was the movement in which machinery changed the methods of manufacturing goods and ultimately changed everyday life for workers (Remini).
The Industrial Revolution was a transformation from agrarian and handicraft-centered economies into economies distinguished by industry and machine manufacture (Bentley and Ziegler 652). It first began in Britain during the mid-eighteenth century and lasted through the nineteenth century (Bentley and Ziegler 652-653). Although the Industrial Revolution was a drastic and ongoing process, does not mean it was an unproblematic change. Many people during this time period experienced positive and negative effects throughout this development.

A movement of industrialization transformed nations everywhere. Many countries experienced social and economic prosperity in this period known as the Industrial Revolution. The people of these countries also experienced change (Jacob, par. 1-5). Prior to the revolution, life for many was much different, allowing for many changes to occur; innovations reached several countries involved in this movement, and the lives of the citizens were largely impacted both positively and negatively.
