In this chapter, we read many different short stories, poems, and plays that deals with love and hate in some way shape or form. We also so look at all aspects of relationships and the complexity they all share. This chapter deals with themes such as conformity, rebellion, culture and identity. I asked myself at the beginning of this “what really is the purpose of this chapter?” and by the end the answer was very clear, which is love and hate deal with is reality and they usual don’t happening induvial they happen at the same time, like many of the stories in this chapter. One example would be the short story “Sweat”. “sweat” deals with a woman named Delia Jones trying overcome abuse from her husband Sykes Jones. “She had brought love to the union …show more content…
and he had brought a longing after the flesh.” By this qoute from the story we realize that Delia truly has love for her husband yet she still is unhappy with her marriage (Hurston, 1926). Delia may even from the beginning hoped he'd change with time, but as we read he doesn’t. another qoute to ponit out their love and hate relationship would be a qoute from delia which states "Ah hates you, Sykes," she said calmly. "Ah hates you tuh de same degree dat Ah useter love yuh." (Hurston, 1926). this moment is also viewed as the turning point in the story because this is when Delia completely opens up and speaks whats on her mind to Sykes because she has had it up to this point and this moment also lets the reader know that she has hate and love for Skykes and she is just at her tiping point. Another example would be the short story “the Storm”.
This story deals love and hate differently from “sweat”. “the Storm” is about A small boy, Bibi, and his father, Bobinôt, who are out during a major storm, and the wife Calixta worried about her family, but also commiting adultry with another married man named Alcée. The storm in this short story repersents the affair that accurs at the house and the guilt of Calixta during that time. The love and hate relationship comes into play when we see Calixta commiting adultry, and when she is with her husband and son at the end. Calixta hates being in the marriage she is in because she is not really in love with Bobinôt she only married him for his money which is why she continues to have the affair with Alcée. Even with Alcée we see the love and hate complex in his marriage to clarisse, we see that this this qoute “And the first free breath since her marriage seemed to restore the pleasant liberty of her maiden days. Devoted as she was to her husband, their intimate conjugal life was something which she was more than willing to forego for a while.” We see her to be pretty reluctant to stay away alittle longer due to her being unhappy in her marriage as
well. In this chapter we see example after example of many love and hate relationships and how close to reality they are. The best part of reading this collection is that there is a lot of different illustrations of what that type of relationship looks like. I have truly enjoyed reading this chapter and the realism that was presented throughout the section and how it showed me people are complex but relationships are even more complex.
When we think about the force that holds the world together and what makes humans different from animals, one answer comes to our minds - that humans can love. Love is a state of mind that cannot be defined easily but can be experienced by everyone. Love is very complicated. In fact it is so complicated that a person in love may be misunderstood to be acting in an extremely foolish manner by other people. The complexity of love is displayed in Rostand’s masterpiece drama Cyrano de Bergerac. This is accomplished by two characters that love the same woman and in the course neither one achieves love in utter perfection.
An important element that is displayed in both love and hate is motivation. An example of this is portrayed in “A Note on My Son’s Face,” as the author states, “I wanted that face to die, to be reborn in the face of a white child” (35,36). This line displays a level of prejudice towards what is hers. Derricotte battles intense feelings of wanting a white looking child amongst a world where not being grateful for what she has is seen as hatred towards her son. She looks at the face of her black child and is filled with animosity for what he looks like and what he will become. This is where the motivational factor comes into play, and where the lines of love and hate really become blurred. Does she hate her child because of how he looks? or Does she love her child because she wants him to become better than what he is destined for? She is motivated by love to want him to become better than what she believes is possible for him, yet she displays hate in the sense that she is hurting the child for what he is, and also for what he has no control over. When an emotion is believed to embody all that brings bliss, serenity, effervescence, and even benevolence, although one may believe its encompassing nature to allow for generalizations and existence virtually everywhere, surprisingly, directly outside the area love covers lies the very antithesis of love: hate, which in all its forms, has the potential to bring pain and destruction. Is it not for this very reason, this confusion, that suicide bombings and other acts of violence and devastation are committed in the name of love? In Kate Chopin’s story “The Storm” it talks about love and lust. It speaks of two kind of storm that occurs. These two storms I find to be the central part of the story, and is being represented as a symbol within the story. The first storm is the most obvious one that Bibi and Bobinot are faced with. The second storm isn’t that visible for it involves Calixta and Alcee. Just as like most storms they come and pass.
The short story “The Storm” by Kate Chopin, deals with the subject of adultery. The story takes place in the early 1900’s. There are two main characters, Calixta (the wife) and Alcee (the former lover). Alcee must take refuge from a passing storm in Calixta’s house, while he is there the two end up making love while Calixta’s husband and son have to wait out the storm at the local store. By doing this Chopin implies the theme that is, adultery is natural and does not necessarily have negative consequences. Through out the story the constant changing of imagery plays a great role in the development of characters and their ability to demonstrate the theme.
Throughout Romeo and Juliet, love and hate are combined. However, even though they are combined, love still remains the principal theme in the play. Although in the play, the theme of hatred can be just as important and sometimes it intensifies the theme of love. For example, Romeo and Juliet’s love wouldn’t have been so extreme and powerful unless there was the hatred between the Montague’s and Capulet’s. We observe this from the very beginning of the prologue.
Infidelity plays a huge role in the book The Storm by Kate Chopins. The book is mainly about a major storm that hits in Louisiana causing many people to be trapped in their homes. The main characted Calixta is locked in her home by herself worried about her Brother, Bibi and her father Bobinot that are stuck trying to wait out the storm at a local store. While Calixta is at home alone an old boyfriend, Alcee happens to be passing by and gets stuck with her at her house. As it continues to storm, Calixta soon does not pay attention to the storm anymore or worries about her family members because her and Alcee begin to make out which leads to sex. Once the storm is over, Alcee leaves and Calixta family member return back home. Later in the story we find out that Alcee had a wife who has been on a trip, but he told her to stay on her trip longer. The sexual acts between Calixta and Alcee throughout the book depicts the act of infidelity.
'The Storm' begins on a stormy spring day, with the protagonist Calixta at her sewing machine. She is alone, her husband Bobinot and son Bibi have gone to the store. Calixta seems to be a bored woman, confined to her duties as a housewife and mother. As the distant storm approaches she is unaware of what the storm brings, her former lover Alcee. Calixta allows Alcee into her home and opens her whole world to him. There is a connection between the storm that is going on outside and the storm of emotions going on in Calixta and Alcee. The weather sends Calixta into Alcee?s arms, he wraps his arms around her, and they can no longer hide their feelings for one another. They gave into their raging emotions and made love. Outside the weather was subsiding and Calixta and Alcee?s bodies felt relaxed and calmed. ?The rain was over; and the sun was turning the glistening green world into a palace of gems.? (1614) His face beamed with light like the sun. The storm inside of her was satisfied and for a brief instant Calixta felt liberated from her ordinary dull life.
I want to argue that in the play, the themes of love and hate are closely linked to the. To show this, I have selected some of the most. important scenes in the play, which illustrate the idea that love and hate are closely bound together. The first example is the chorus. which is found at the beginning of the play, in the prologue.

In this short story Alcee and Calixta both come to realization of how good they have things with their spouses and how that they already found the ones that they love, which weren't each other. This made me aware of how we as people can take things for granted or believing we know what’s best for us. In reality we don't always know what’s best until something occurs and shows us that what we already have is the best.
In“The Storm”, Bibi, a young boy, and his father, Bobinot, wait out a storm at a local store. They are both very concerned about the well being of a third member of their family, Calixta, but they cannot do anything about it until the storm is over. Calixta, at home, knows that there is a storm about to break out. An old boyfriend coincidentally stays with her while the storm is taking place. Calixta and her old boyfriend, Alce, see a spark in their lusts for each other then start to make out and the making out leads to sex. When the storm passes, the old boyfriend, Alce leaves. Bibi and Bobinot, Calixta’s husband, never find out that Alce was there. When the child and Babinot return home, Calixta is really glad to see them. In the end of the story, Alce writes a letter to his wife, Clarisse, saying that it’s OK with him if she wants to stay longer on her trip. She is relieved because she wants a break from her husband and the romantic aspect of their relationship. When the storm passes, everything works out well for everyone.
Ultimately`, William Shakespeare shows in many different ways throughout the play, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, that love is the more powerful force than hate. The readers see how the characters continuously forgive one another, even when the conditions are tough. The friendships between specific characters display a loving bond that cannot be broken with hate. Shakespeare demonstrates that Romeo and Juliet’s love can overpower the hate of many events in the play. He shows that their love can even overpower the death of one of their own family members. Romeo and Juliet’s love brings friendship between their feuding families. This story is a true example of how love can conquer all.
In this essay I would like to emphasize different ideas of how love is understood and discussed in literature. This topic has been immortal.
