What Cause the death of Louise Mallard: Death from Self-Assertion or Death from Marriage In this paper I intend to research the death of a character in the short story "Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin. This story was written in an error when many women was not thought to be equal or was thought to behave a certain way. Earlier in the semester our class had an discussion about feminist criticism. Joyce Karpay felt that men historically had a upper hand on women in society. In “Feminist Criticism” she goes on giving examples how men controlled cultural, social, and economic institution. Joyce felt that dominance and submission were a part of all structures of life. The critics look at the languages and how there are advantages for men …show more content…

Lawrence Berkove believes that the story was about self-assertions which were the cause of Louise Mallard 's death. She was obsessed with the thought of living for herself. Lawrence Berkove called her immature, egotist and a victim of her own self-assertion. I think Lawrence Berkove thesis is all about Louise mallard 's obsession with herself. She wants to live for her and her only. Lawrence Berkove explains in the first paragraph that there is a deeper level of irony to the story. He also goes on to say that the irony is carefully distinguished between the narrator, author and the Unreliable protagonist. The biography Lawrence Berkove referenced was Seyested 's early biography. That biography is also about self-assertion but to a different extent. Seyested believed that Louise mallard wasn’t happy married. Lawrence Berkove felt "it was an attack on marriage, one person 's dominance over another." (152). Berkove referenced it because he felt like it was one of them misinterpretations of the story. Berkove writes in his footnotes that marriage is a culprit and in society it’s the suppression of feminine …show more content…

Berkove also says the story is not at all about marriage, but about Louise. The story is missing evidence of where the husband is supposal living for his wife. All these examples support the fact thesis of Louise is self-absorbed.
Berkove concluded his essay by stating that the things Louise simply desired was impossible to have. He also says he thinks the character was immature and an egotistical. The story was never about marriage but about irony. The interpretation of "The Story of an Hour" "Chopin projects irony of what would happen if an Immature and shallow egotist were to face the earthly consequences of an impossible dream of hers afflicted heart."(158).
In conclusion I don’t think the question is what killed Louise Mallard? How did she kill herself. Why was it so important for her to only live for herself and not think of others. This may have been the actual cause of her death. She had been the prime example of the New Woman who wanted to live for herself and not under the shadow of her husband. The actual thought of living for herself may have cost her life. I wonder why hadn 't she just got divorced if she didn 't love Mr. Mallard anymore before she
