Absolute rulers like Louis xiv and Peter the Great strengthened there
countries butweakened them economically. They made great improvements
to the armies and social aspects of the kingdom. But when they were improving
all of these things it ended up costing them a great deal of money. Was it good to
have a great army and government if everyone had no money? Absolutism is a
political theory holding that all power should bevested in one ruler or other
authority. Both Louis xiv and Peter the Great considered themselves to be absolute
rulers and they had divine right.
Louis xiv changed France in many ways. He helped and hurt the growing
nation. In order to become a true absolute ruler Louis xiv needed to make sure
that ll the power was contained in himself. So he did a very clever thing, he took
the nobles power out of the government. And to make sure they didnt realize
that their power was being taken away slowly he gave them positions in the army
(doc.7). This now made france a true absolute monarchy. All the power was now
in louis xiv. He made all the decisions and no one could stop or disagree with

Of all the absolute rulers in Europe, by far the best example of one, and the most powerful, was Louis XIV of France. Although Louis had some failures, he also had many successes. He controlled France’s money and had many different ways to get, as well as keep his power, and he knew how to delegate jobs to smart, but loyal people.

When Louis the XIV began his rule in 1643, his actions immediately began to suggest and absolute dictatorship. Because of the misery he had previously suffered, one of the first things he did was to decrease the power of the nobility. He withdrew himself from the rich upper class, doing everything secretly. The wealth had no connection to Louis, and therefore all power they previously had was gone. He had complete control over the nobles, spying, going through mail, and a secret police force made sure that Louis had absolute power. Louis appointed all of his officials, middle class men who served him without wanting any power. Louis wanted it clear that none of his power would be shared. He wanted "people to know by the rank of the men who served him that he had no intention of sharing power with them." If Louis XIV appointed advisors from the upper classes, they would expect to gain power, and Louis was not willing to give it to them. The way Louis XIV ruled, the sole powerful leader, made him an absolute ruler. He had divine rule, and did not want to give any power to anyone other than himself. These beliefs made him an absolute ruler.
Torture, the most extreme form of human violence, resulting in both physical and psychological consequences. The world used torture as a means of acquiring a confession. The Russian Tsars would use torture in order to extract confessions. Ivan the terrible would torture his subjects for amusement, and Peter the great became paranoid that his own son was planning treason and had him tortured and executed. During six on six, some girls scored sixty points a night. People don’t see that happening anymore. Some girls are lucky to get one thousand points in their high school career now. One girl from Ventura, Iowa, Lynne Lorenzen, scored 6,736 points in her high school career. Lynne played on the Ventura team that went to the state championship. Within four years, she scored that many points. That sounds completely insane. Kelly Meader, a teacher and coach from our school, got to play with Lynne (Tiffany and Cassy). That’s pretty cool getting to play with someone that has the all time record for scoring during six on six basketball. There is a girl who scored forty-four points one night this year already, but that’s really the most that has been reported this year for five on five. It doesn’t happen very often. Since there are five girls all on offense, more girls have the chance to score. When there were only three girls on offense, those three had to shoot more, so it made sense as to why they could score so much more than girls do

The game of basketball is a highly recognized and widely known sport. Basketball was first heard of in the winter of 1891 when a man by the name of James Naismith was told to instruct a physical education class at the Young Men’s Christian Association in Springfield, Massachusetts. Naismith was instructed to put together a game for young men to enjoy while they were at the YMCA. While trying to come up with a brilliant and fun game for these young men, Naismith reminisced back on his childhood in Canada. He remembered a game his friends and him had played all the time: “Duck on a Rock”, which involved trying to knock a large rock off a boulder by throwing smaller rocks at it. Naismith also remembered watching a game of rugby going on in the gymnasium. The game of Rugby involved tossing a ball into a box. After a very short time of trying to make up a game for these young men, Naismith came up with a brilliant idea. Little did he know the game that he came up with just so happened to be one of he most renowned sports in American history. Naismith’s idea pertained to nailing up raised boxes so that players could attempt to throw a ball in the basket. When there were no boxes too be found, he used peach baskets. Supposedly, Naismith came up with all the rules for this game in no more than “about an hour”, according to Alexander Wolff. Shortly after Naismith had invented the game of basketball, graduates of the YMCA traveled internationally which is the main reason as to why this sport is so widely known. In the Central America, most notably the Yucatan Peninsula, are the Maya, a group of people whose polytheistic religion and advanced civilization once flourished (Houston, 43). The Maya reached their peak during the Classic Period from around CE 250 to the ninth century CE when the civilization fell and dispersed (Sharer, 1). But now let’s go back to what basketball was like when it was created.
Some people argue that the goal of saving innocent lives must overrule a person's right not to be tortured. This argument is presented in its simplest form in the "ticking bomb" situation: an explosive has been set to detonate that will kill thousands of people and a detained person is known to have information on where the bomb is and how to defuse it. Is torture acceptable in such a case to force the convict to talk? Those who say that it is, reason that governments should be permitted to choose torture as the lesser of two evils in such a situation. The global community, however, has forbidden the use of torture even in the "ticking bomb" case. Universal human rights laws, as well as U.S. law, do not have any exceptions to the barring against torture.
Opponents of torture would answer the question with a swift, no. Opponents of torture will argue that the idea of human rights was developed with the belief that "the human does not exist for the benefit of the State, but that the State exists for the benefit of the human being."(Burgers and Danelius, 1988)
