Recommended: Myth of atlantis
The Lost Civilization of Atlantis How could an entire civilization just disappear? This is a mystery many have tried to solve for thousands of years. According to the writing of Plato, Atlantis was an extremely advanced society, especially known for its architecture. The metropolis of Atlantis consisted of five concentric rings, two of land and three of water, surround and providing protection to an island with a temple dedicated to the Greek god, Poseidon. yet today, it seems only to be a myth. The legend of the lost city of Atlantis encompasses many mysteries, three of which are: its lost advances, its puzzling disappearance, and the location of its fabled ruins. The people of Atlantis were very powerful, having a great military force that no one could defeat (around 9000 BC), and control over a large area of land – bigger than Asia Minor and Libya combined. The rulers of Atlantis used this military might to conquer lands for their colonization. Not only that, but their …show more content…

Because of their unruly conquests of land, Zeus, the King of all Greek gods, wanted to punish the Atlanteans. Here, Plato’s writing in Critias stops, and there is no more explanation. However, in Timaeus, Plato also refers to Atlantis, saying that it had been razed through a series of deadly earthquakes, floods, and fires. It has been assumed over the years that Atlantis could not withstand the wrath of Zeus, and the people were completely destroyed as a lesson to other Greeks to avoid
A man named Robert Laughlin once said, "The Earth is very old and has suffered grievously: volcanic explosions, floods, meteor impacts, mountain formation and yet all manner of other abuses greater than anything people could inflict. Yet, the Earth is still here. It's a survivor." Laughlin clearly believes in this quote that the Earth can take care of itself. The Earth has been through worse disasters than just pollution, and extinction of species and plants. Roderick Nash, an environmentalist and activist, says otherwise.
In the article "Island Civilization: A vision for human occupancy of earth in the fourth millennium" a very good point was made about how humans are not treating the earth with respect, however our generation still has a chance to turn the earth from cancerous to healthy.
When they arrive at Ithaca, they place Odysseus on a beach while he is sound asleep. Poseidon sees that Odysseus has reached home and asks Zeus if he can punish Odysseus for the final time. Zeus suggests he punish the Phaecians instead for helping Poseidon's enemy. Therefore, as the Phaecians' ship is just outside the reach of their harbor on the journey home…Poseidon sends the ship crashing into the rocks. Alcinous then speaks of a prophecy that his father told him - that the great god Poseidon would punish them, crash one of their ships, and raise a mountain blocking their harbor.
Atlantis, the fabled lost city: legend tells us that the city full of fortune and wealth that turned greedy and angered the gods. By angering the gods, the entire city was swallowed up in a massive earthquake. However, the only proof we have of Atlantis existing at all is a single dialogue written by Greek philosopher Plato (427-347 BCE), and many theories that have come from that. The theories talk about the location of Plato’s Atlantis being everywhere from The Bahamas to Antarctica. But the theory that is most common is Atlantis was the island nation of Santorini, or to be more precise Thera. From the evidence I’ve been given, Santorini could be Atlantis.
He would have escaped, /Despite Athena’s hatred, but he lost his wits /And boasted loudly that he had survived the deep /In spite of the gods. Poseidon heard this boast, /And with his trident he struck Gyrae’s rock /And broke it asunder. One part held firm, /But the other part, upon which Ajax sat /In his blind arrogance, fell into the gulf /And took Ajax with it.
Now that we know the foundation of the Atlantis myth we can now speculate if this is even possible with today’s science and geography. Atlantis was said to be bigger than Asia Minor and Libya combined. This statement made by Plato in the Critias is most likely not true because Atlantis would have to be in the Mediterranean Sea or within a few miles of the Mediterranean Sea such as the Atlantic Ocean or Indian Ocean.
The collapse caused much knowledge and culture to be lost, but some was passed on by what are thought to be Mycenaeans who escaped.
Thesis: Atlantis not only fascinated Plato but modern scholars as well who are now deeming it more than a myth because of its possible location(s), plausible destruction, and the physical evidence of this forgotten city.
However, this chronological realignment does not mean that the eruption of Santorini had nothing to do with the Minoan collapse. Most obviously, the island of Thera, which the Minoans probably used as a trading centre or stop-off, was totally destroyed. This would have caused huge problems for the Minoan’s trading empire.
In modern times, discussion around the myth of Atlantis generally consists of debate regarding whether or not Atlantis was a real civilization. One side attempts to paint the myth of Atlantis as a historical fact based on corroborating reports from within Egypt during the reported time of its existence while the other side simply tries to show that the myth of Atlantis is a cautionary tale of hubris to prove a point made in the Timaeus and Critias by Plato. While we still do not know if either side is completely correct, it is assumed that the myth of Atlantis was used by Plato in order to show what happens to a perfect society when their own hubris came to be
This dark and woeful place is as far beneath the earth as heaven is above the earth. Around Tartarus runs a fence of bronze with gates of bronze, which Poseidon fixed in such a way as to offer no escape, and there the Titans were forever confined. After Zeus, with his brothers and sisters, defeated the Titans and dethroned Cronus, the three brothers drew lots out of a helmet to determine which one of the three realms each would rule. Zeus won the heavens and thus became the supreme ruler, Hades won the Underworld and Poseidon won the sea.... ... middle of paper ...
Since Poseidon, god of the earthquake, is still furious toward Odysseus for stabbing Polyphemus in the eye, the Phaeacians’s xenia went wrong. They hosted their guest properly, but went against the gods’ will and in a way showed no respect to the gods, especially Poseidon. After Poseidon knew Odysseus went back to Ithaca, he said, “I will lose all my honor now among the immortals, now there are mortal men who show me no respect – Phaeacians, too.” (13. 145-147) Thus, the Phaeacians were punished and killed for showing xenia to the wrong
The Mycenaean civilization flourished for four hundred years in the late Bronze Age before collapsing in to small bands of subsistence farmers. Some historians attribute this decline to ‘the Sea People’ who terrorized the Egyptians, Anatolians and the Hittites. But could a mysterious people who left no archeological proof of their existence really bring about the collapse of entire civilizations?
The factors that lead to the “collapse” of civilizations are almost directly related to those that created it. Archaeologists characterize collapse by a number of elements, some of which we have evidence for, others we do not. Most archaeologists are unsure of exactly what caused the decline of most civilizations in the ancient world, yet there are many clues to some of the events that could have contributed. The collapse of the ancient Roman Empire, the Mesoamerican Mayan, and the Egyptian cultures will be discussed in the following paragraphs, with a focus on the uniqueness of each.
Plato gave the first and principal written account of Atlantis in his dialogues, “Critias” and “Timaeus”. In his description, Atlantis was a huge island located near the Straits of Gibraltar. In this island, there was a great empire which had flourished more than nine thousand years earlier. Atlantean residents had extraordinary intelligence. Their society was far more advanced than any other civilization at that time. The wealth of Atlantis was so unimaginable that even the walls were covered in gold. Furthermore, Atlantis had a huge trading network and a powerful navy. But with the passage of time, the Atlanteans became more and more arrogant, and they even wanted to rule the whole world. They were defeated by brave Athens soldiers. After that, fatal earthquakes and floods occurred in Atlantis; and in a single day and night, the island of Atlantis was swallowed up by the sea.
