In Stephen Spielberg’s movie, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark,
Spielberg uses different methods of showing heroism by using characteristics such as intelligence, courage, and hero/anti hero to give aspects of what a hero is like. Spielberg also uses different techniques to show heroism such as literary elements, allusions, and perseverance. Spielberg shows how everyday people can step up and be a hero with these characteristics and methods.

Spielberg uses intelligence and literary elements in his movie to inform his movie viewers about why heroes need to have good quality because heroes need to solve difficult problems evolving around them.In one of the movie scene where he went to the digging site in Egypt to find the map room that is controlled by the Nazi’s. In the movie, Indiana Jones uses skills he obtained to find and read the map. Afterward he used his landscaping skill to find the location of the Lost Ark. Movie viewers of Spielberg’s movie are being informed on good qualities of a hero in the snake pit scene, because of the risks Indiana Jones is taking to keep the Ark away from the Nazis. In the snake pit scene of the movie, Indiana Jones had to go down into the pit of snakes to find the Ark before the Nazis. In the scene where Indiana Jones is looking up towards the Nazis, Spielberg uses the characteristic of courage and the technique of allusion. Spielberg uses these to show outstanding qualities a hero must have to be good. Spielberg uses these methods and characteristics to get the message across to people to be a good hero. However, when an individual reads a book or watches a movie, they subconsciously create connections to the plot as they relate it to their own lives. After the movie is completely watched one is able to sit down and ask himself, “Did I like that movie?” While an average person could give a simple yes or no answer, a professional in the field of reviewing movies and novels knows that the quality of the movie is directly related to its rhetorical effectiveness. If one were to attempt an analysis of a film or book’s rhetorical effectiveness, they would need to reference what is called the “Rhetoric Triangle” which is comprised of Ethos, Logos and Pathos. These three devices can be classified as tools for persuasion, thus, a great piece of work will have each of these tools. An excellent example of a novel that successfully incorporates each of these forms of rhetoric is titled The Lightning Thief and was written by Rick Riordan and published in 2005. Riordan made this book so successful through his vivid portrayal of a Greek mythological world hiding within reality all across America. The written genre of The Lightning Thief provided the foundation for Chris Columbus to create film adaptation of the novel in 2010. Chris Columbus’ film representation of the novel The Lightning Thief (2005), while proving to be disappointing in regards to the plot when compared to the novel, both representations were able to clearly create connections to Aristotle’s three ingredients for persuasion: Ethos, Logos and Pathos.
