Losing the Connection
Lynda Smiths essay Disconnected in the inventing arguments book is all about computers and cell phones. The author is trying to convey her feelings and thoughts on how computers and cell phones art giving people more time there just speeding up the rate of which we do things, along with furthering the gap between people. While cell phones were made for the purpose of staying connected with others in real time there being used constantly and taking up more time than before. People no longer communicate in person instead they sent text messages or message over social media.
She was very convincing. She made sure to point out that she wasn’t saying computers and cell phones are bad and that she sees the reasons there good
but that people are wasting to much energy on them and not saving time as they were intended to do. A few spot in the essay she gets off on a side note and it seem just like rambling, she could have avoided that. In all she wrote a good essay that has stellar point and makes people think about how much time is truly spent on the phone. Her paper had a point she felt needed said. There was a good background and layout to what she was trying to get a crossed. Her paper was worth reading so it was worth writing. She conveys how she feels on the subject without being rude and grabs the reader’s attention; there wasn’t a moment when her paper wasn’t worth reading.
Today’s world has become so dependent on technology that people can hardly be away from their cell phone. In Fahrenheit 451, Mildred portrays one of those people. In the article, “Have we become too dependent on smart phone technology?” a woman and her friends test just how long they can be away from their cell phones. “‘The first 30 minutes to an hour all we talked about was how we missed our phones,’ Erebia said” (Ortega 1). The quote goes to show that people can hardly have conversation with out their security blanket, better known as their smart phone. “Smart phone technology is a double-edged sword when it comes to communication. Some people may be so engrossed in their phones that they would rather focus on that than on the person right in front of them – this is the bad – he said” (Ortega 2). At the end of this article everyone can agree that technology has a power over our lives.

Paul Goldberger explores this theme in his essay, “Disconnected Urbanism,” where he explains how cell phones have rendered public spaces, such as urban streets, less public. Her slow yet concise way of speaking, coupled with easy to follow transitions allowed for a speech that was enjoyable to listen to. Her use of examples from her personal life allowed her audience to get a picture of who she was if they did not know, and allowed her to better relate to them by provided examples of how she is related to the college they are graduating from. Her reference to many modern political problems allowed her to bring up her important role as an activist and facilitated further understanding from the audience. While some areas of her speech were weak, such as the longer than needed pauses and her lack of consistent eye contact, to a few points where she didn’t speak clearly enough, the overall picture that was her speech was fairly strong. Looking at this speech, I hope to incorporate some aspects that I failed to include in my previous speeches. Everyone has gotten to the point where they are just absurdly lazy and do not want to put in the attempt for reading, writing, or even having a conversation face to face. They are just obsessed with knowing when the next monster iPhone will come out. The majority of todays society is obsessed with technology. Is it about time we pull the plug on technology. The evolution of wireless communication changed our lives for the worse; people can barely communicate face to face anymore, occasionally not even a simple phone call can be made, everyone would rather send an email or text message.
Consider a situation where a family is sitting at the dining table, the son pull out his iPhone, connects to Wi-Fi, and starts chatting with his friends on “Facebook”. The father has a Samsung Galaxy S4 in his hands and he is reading the newspaper online and using “Whatsapp” messenger while having his meal. The mother is busy texting her friends. They are all “socializing” but none of them has spoken as much as a single word to each other. This situation can be commonly seen nowadays. Technology has brought us closer and squeezed the distances but in reality, it has taken us away from each other. The rapid growth of technology has brought about significant changes in human lives, especially in their relationships. The latest technologies have turned this world into a “global village” but the way humans interact with each other, the types of relations and their importance has changed a lot.
