This past season Los Angeles Clippers coach Doc Rivers made a bold choice. Upon his arrival from having coached the Boston Celtics, he decided to hang massive posters of his players in the Staples Center upper deck, where the comfortably cover up the Los Angeles Lakers 16 championship banners (Golliver). The posters portray - from left to right - Jamal Crawford, Blake Griffin, J.J. Redick, DeAndre Jordan, Jared Dudley, Chris Paul and Matt Barnes in their home white jerseys. Though very risky, his decisions was of perfect timing considering the decline of Laker wins for the past two seasons. Both the Lakers and the Clippers have played their home games at the Staples Center since it opened in 1999(Baker) and considering that the Los Angeles Clippers have no champion ship banners, but are on the rise of doing great things, it was only time. The lakers have gone through the past three years.
At the Start of the Season At the start of the season the Los Angeles Clippers had all returning starters and they were all healthy. The Lakers traded Pau Gasol for veterian Carlos Boozer during the summer trade deadline, picked Byron Scott as the new head coach, and Kobe is back from his absence with a renewed contract of 48.5 million dollars for the next two years(Broussard). From the draft they picked up former Kentucky player Julius Randle(NBA). As for injuries they have Nick Young who is out with a complete tear of the radial collateral ligament in his right thumb and expected to miss six to eight weeks(ESPN). Former MVP and starting point guard Steve Nash is out for the season with an back injury(White).
Clippers pros/cons The Los Angeles Clippers are a most definitely a Western Conference Finals contender. Donald Sterling
This season is no exception. What I consider to be the biggest NBA All-Star snub of ALL TIME (yeah, I said it), is Russell Westbrook’s absence from the starting five for the Western Conference.
In overtime, behind and with little time on the clock Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook sinks an off balanced three and pushes the Thunder past the Golden State Warriors 113-112. This happened on November 29th, 2013 but 9 years prior this was all a dream of the people in Oklahoma City. It all started on August 29, 2005 when hurricane Katrina released hell on New Orleans. Most of New Orleans was destroyed by flood waters. This caused the New Orleans Hornets to temporarily relocate to Oklahoma City. They played in Oklahoma City for two seasons before New Orleans was able to host them again. These two seasons created national attention toward Oklahoma City for the great fan base and prospective city for a new team. A group of Oklahoma City investors led by Clay Bennett buy the Sonics franchise. After the 2007-2008 season the Seattle Super Sonics file relocation papers to relocate to Oklahoma City. When they get to

In spring of 1991, the University of Michigan signed what was arguably the best recruiting class in the history of college basketball. Coach Steve Fisher signed five of the nation's top prospects - Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson. Webber and Rose were childhood friends from Detroit who turned into McDonald's All Americans. The 6'9" power forward, Webber, was regarded as the number one player in the nation. Rose was a tall guard standing 6'7", who played like a young Magic Johnson. Howard, another McDonald's All American, was a multi-talented forward from Chicago. Texas natives King and Jackson capped off the Fab Five Freshman. While Jackson was an incredible defensive player, King was a super athletic guard [Wieberg].
...ers' evolution from mother and student into a leading voice against the merchandising of Native American sacred symbols -- and shows the lengths to which fans will go to preserve their mascots." In keeping all the Native American Mascots in schools, colleges, and professional sports teams we are showing a lack of respect. The Native Americans have voiced the lack of honor these names are bringing to them. "The fact that history has ignored the incredible pain we have inflicted on Native Americans does not now give us the right to ignore their largely muted call." Americans need to take a step back think about how they would feel if there ritual and or sacred tradition was misused. "We feel that we are being put in a position of sacrificing our dignity and pride and will never be treated as equals in white society as long as the use of Indian symbols continues."
During the first year of Magic Johnson as the owner, the fan attendance went up 8.6 percent. "When I got off the boat in L.A. (in 1979), the Dodgers were on the first page of the sports section," said Earvin "Magic" Johnson. "I checked the Lakers on the third page. That's how far down we were. I said, 'Wow, this was a Dodger town.' Three things: Dodgers, No. 1. USC footba...
“When you combine the Thunder with the arts and parks and other stuff we have, then it’s a complete package, if you want to be relevant to the pop culture of America, a city has to have a major league franchise” (Mecoy). When one asks, “What is there to do in Oklahoma?” the majority of people will answer, “Go to a Thunder game!”. In this quote said by an economist, Mark Snead, mentions this impact the Thunder has had, “We do not have mountains. We don’t have a coastline. We don’t have a ski resort. It’s one of those components that now make Oklahoma City completely in a different category” (Mec...
Times have changed - what was acceptable 30 years ago may not hold up in today’s world. Racially offensive mascots have created division - not unity. If teams like the Indians, Braves and Redskins were to change their names and update their branding, they could potentially benefit more than by holding on to offensive, outdated traditions. Why would a professional sports organization settle for fewer fans, less revenue, and an image that offends its own citizens? By...
The city I chose was Las Vegas, NV that ranks 298 on the Building Resilient Regions website. The Spanish named this huge valley that was full of wild grass and minerals “The Meadows” that then translated into Las Vegas. Now, Las Vegas is very different among U.S cities for it is famous for the luxury casinos and the shows. It has the title of being the “Entertainment Capital of the World” and is very prosperous in cultivating a diversified economy. I chose this city because it is a city that truly never sleeps and always has some sort of resource going in or out. Another reason why I chose Las Vegas is because it is one of the strongest economic cities in the United States and certainly takes up a lot of resources to fuel this never stopping city. I was very interested in researching to see why Las Vegas wasn’t resilient and what could be improved.
Most players that enter the NBA draft early are 19 or 20 years-old. They are going to end up playing against 25-year-olds that are stronger, faster, and that have had more experience than they have. Along with more experience, they will not be as physically fit because one or two years of college will not do it, and high school will not do it. For example, Lebron James. He is considered one of the best to have played the game, and he went straight out of high school. Imagine if he had gone to college, he would be so much better. So if they leave after the freshman or sophomore year, they will be about five or six years behind and that will make it harder to get a spot on the bench. If they do not make it to the bench, then they will be in the D league for 2 or 3 years to help develop their skills. “The D-League uses a tiered compensation system that's based on experience. Players with ample NBA
The NBA is a desirable basketball hotspot. Domestic players train to be drafted, and International players want to enter the NBA.
The growing debate about the mascots, logos, and team names used in sports has been an issue since the 1960’s-1970’s. The argument that is at hand is depicting if these symbols are a representation of pride or if they can be classified as racist. There are many supporters to both sides of this debate. Many on one side are arguing that the symbols are clearly racist while others on the opposing side are making claims that the symbols are an honor to whom they are portraying and are negatively connected to racism. There also the individuals who do not identify with either side, obtaining the belief that these symbols are a representation of the organization itself rather that creating a backstory or an image associated to anything other than the organization represented by an image. With many debates and issues regarding the topic happening annually, the question remains, what should be done about the racism issue in the sports industries?
