The Key to Happiness
Does money really bring happiness? This questions has been asked many times throughout history yet there is no real answer for it. The only true way to understand if money does make people happy is by learning from others experiences and by learning from your own. In Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun the characters are caught up in caring too much about the insurance money they received for their father’s death, and it effects them all in many different decisions that they make such as Ruth almost getting an abortion, Mama purchasing a new house for the family, and Walter investing in the liquor store with some of his friends. Willy Harris takes the money and skips out of town and then Walter gets depressed because he fills he let the family down because he lost most of the money. He begins to fell self-pity because he thinks that God has never given him a chance to succeed in life. Walter also starts skipping out on his job to just drive around and gets drunk. When Mama will not give Walter all of the money he begins to feels upset because he is supposed to be the man of the house. After much harassment mama tells Walter to take the money and invest in his business. Her only request was to put three thousand dollars away for Beneatha’s collage. Walter begins to feel that he his life is being fulfilled because mam is entrusting him with the money. He decides to take it all and invest it in the liquor store with two of his two friends. He ends up taking all of the money and loses it. Many people argue that money only brings confusion but Walter symbolizes what happens to dream when money is available and when it is gone. Money is what drives dreams and without money no dream can come true. Walter felt that the only way he could truly become the man of the house is by controlling the money. When Walter took control of the money he also took control of the future of every one in his family, proving money does control everything even
