A Raisin in the Sun is a play written by Lorraine Hansberry. According to Kester-Shelton, Hansberry was the first African American women to have her play produced on Broadway. Lorraine Hansberry was concerned with the fight for civil, human, and women’s right (Kester-Shelton). Many of Hansberry’s works reflect on the race and movements of the late 1950’s (Kester-Shelton). Also, her works focus on the bonds and conflicts of family and romantic relationships (Kester-Shelton). Hansberry’s life was cut short due to dying from cancer only at the age of 34 (Kester-Shelton). Many people judge other people based on their social status, ethnicity, and even gender. According to Melvin in the 21st century America still had a cast over the opportunities that African Americas could possibly have. African Americans continue to fall behind Whites in terms of ownership (Melvin). Also, African Americans tend to own homes with less equity than white-owned homes (Melvin). Whereas African Americans are still sixty percent more likely than Whites to be turned down for a home loan (Melvin). Whites are able to make sure that they have a secure foothold in America to ensure that their children will get an education, purchase a home, or even start a business (Melvin). While African Americans tend to struggle to gain traction in the economy and to ensure that their children have a bright future (Melvin). Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun shows how an African American family struggled to achieve their American Dreams. Hansberry is concerned with the issue of racial discrimination and for African Americans to demand equality (Nowrouzi). Racism was an issue in this play by the Younger family did not have any interaction with the white society besides work and a visit from Mr. Lindner. Another issue in this play was discrimination because the Younger family wanted to move out of the Chicago ghetto into a white neighborhood. They were struggling to move into the white neighborhood because the white society did not accept them because of the color of their skin. The Younger family did not let the fact that they had a different skin color and were not welcomed by the white society determine their future.
