In the exciting novel, Lord of the Flies, there are many symbols. Some more important and more observed than others. One of these more important and more thoroughly observed symbols is Piggy’s specs. Piggy’s specs are crucial to the boys’ survival on the island because they made the fire that they so badly needed for survival. His specs help in there survival because without the specs to make the fire they wouldn’t have been able to keep warm, cook food, or signal the ship that rescued them. The specs were so important that they argued and fought over who got them. One time Jack’s gang stole them and broke them because they wanted them and needed them so badly. So many people desired them because they are needed to survive on the Island. Lastly, the specs represent many things in the book such as power, leadership, and differences between Jack and Ralph.
Piggy’s specs are used for lighting the fire in the beginning of this novel. This is a huge accomplishment because without the fire the kids would have died a long, long time ago. The fire enabled them to eat, keep warm, and signal planes of boats for rescue. His specs are essential to their survival.
The specs help in their survival because the fire is the main priority on the Island. It cooked the food that the hunters kill. Without cooking the food they can’t eat anything except berries and plants. These things run out and are not as nutritional. The kids need meat to survive. The fire kept the kids warm during the nighttime. At night it gets cold out and the kids could get sick if they are exposed to extremely hot or cold temperatures. This would cause the kids to get sick and maybe even die. Also, the fire was used as a signal. The fire signaled the boat that rescued them from the Island. The boat wouldn’t have come to save them if it didn’t see the smoke made by the fire. The fire is an absolute necessity on the Island. The kids would have had no chance of living without the fire.
One time, the specs got broken because Ralph and Jack separated and Jacks gang wanted the spec. Therefore, Jack’s gang tried stealing them in the night from Piggy. They didn’t steal them but the specs were broken. Another time, they ambushed Piggy and stole them from him.
Then, one night, Jack and a small group raid Ralph's hut and steals piggy's specs (Piggy's glasses is the only tool to start a fire on the island). The is the second step from breaking away from order. "'I thought they wanted the conch'. Ralph trotted down the pale beach and jumped on to the platform. The conch still glimmered by the chief's seat. He gazed for a moment or two, then went back to Piggy. 'They didn't take the conch'" (Golding 168). Since the specs is the only thing thing that makes fire, you could say that they represent fire itself. Fire was vital to our prehistoric ancestors, so you can connect fire to our primal instincts. So when Jack stole the specs instead of the conch, he took a step back from society. After Ralph and Piggy confronts Jack and his group, the conch is smashed into pieces. When this happens, all order is completely lost. Jack and his group are now in complete control, and there is no hope of the children going back into the customs of society. When the conch is destroyed, Piggy is killed. "The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from the chin to the knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist. ... the body of Piggy was gone. This time the silence was complete. Ralph's lips formed a word but no sound came. Suddenly Jack bounded out from the tribe and begun to scream wildly. 'See? See? That's what you'll get! I meant that! There isn't a tribe for you anymore! The conch is gone-' He ran forward, stooping. 'I'm chief!'" (Golding 181) When the conch and Piggy disappeared, Jack claimed that he was chief. I think that even though the conch was broken, he still would have "considered" Ralph to be a chief. But now that Piggy was gone, there would be no one on Ralph's side, so Jack takes the title of chief for
When Piggy’s glasses break in half, it symbolizes the boy's descent into savageness. Glasses, by definition¹, are “a pair of lenses used to correct or assist defective eyesight for an individual with vision problems.” Obviously, these glasses are only effective when the lenses are not broken, and this principle also applies in The Lord of the Flies. In The Lord of the Flies, the goal of the boys is to survive, and get rescued off of the island. To get rescued off of the island and therefore survive, Ralph decides that the boys need a fire, to make a smoke signal so passing ships or planes can spot them. They use the lenses of Piggy’s glasses to start this fire. When Jack lets this fire go out when he is out hunting for a pig, Ralph gets very angry, because the passing ship could have rescued them. This leads to the first fight as a result of the boy's’ newfound savageness. This fight leads to Piggy’s glasses breaking for the first time. Piggy’s glasses break again when Jack’s group steals them in a bid to start a fire of their own. “I just take the conch to say this. I can’t see no more and I got to get my glasses back.
Page seventy-one states, “There was a ship out there you said you’d keep the fire going and you let it out!”(Golding). This shows that they believe that the fire will help them escape the island and the boys desperately cling to the hope fire provides. However, as the story concludes the fire takes on a different meaning: “The whole island was shuddering with flame” (Golding 201). This dark and powerful portrayal of the fire describes a weapon of mass destruction. The atomic bomb was used twice just like the fire. The fire’s symbolism, like others’, shifts throughout the story.
Piggy's literal function in this novel is to be the intellectual and logical thinker to counteract the emotional thinking of the other boys. From the beginning, Piggy viewed everything logically. He quickly came to the realization that the boys may be on the island for a long time, when he told Ralph "Nobody don't know we're here. Your dad don't know, nobody don't know" (9), contrary to Ralph's assumption that his father, who happened to be a naval officer, would simply come and rescue them. While Ralph became the natural leader based on his charisma, "what intelligence had been shown was traceable to Piggy" (18/19). However, it is unfortunate that this intelligence eventually led Piggy to his demise. Piggy's direct way of analyzing a situation and voicing his opinion tended to make him quite un...
Two boys from similar upbringings can both be so drastically different when put in difficult situations and given things to make them wield power, among others. Spitz says, “But his desire for many controls did not, of course, extend to controls he disliked, to those over himself. These glasses are very symbolic. They don’t just represent Piggy, but all the boys and how they must survive on the island, although they do not realize its importance yet.
Afghanistan was a very different place before the Taliban came to power. Women had a different role in society. They enjoyed much more freedom and equality. They could go to colleges of their choice and pursue careers they wanted to have. In fact prior to the Taliban takeover of Kabul ( the capital of Afghanistan ), 60% of Kabul University teachers were women, half the students, women made up of half of the civilian government worker population, 70% of the school teachers, 40% of the doctors, some women have served in parliament (Schulz). Women could go out to restaurants, discos, walk publicly with their boyfriends, and enjoyed a much looser dress code. The most popular Afghani women’s clothes of the time were in fact, jeans and mini-skirts (Schulz).
In the novel, "Lord of the Flies," a group of British boys are left on a deserted island in the middle of nowhere. Throughout the novel, they have conflicts between civilization and savagery, good vs. evil, order vs. chaos, and reason vs. impulse. What would it be like if the boys were replaced by a group of girls? Would they behave the same way they did in the novel? I believe that the girls would act in the same behavior as the boys in all ways because, everyone is installed with evil inside them which is their natural instinct, also because in life there is always a power struggle in all manners, and the outcome with the girls would be similar-since both sexes would plan on getting rescued.
It is undoubted that we are exposed to more open and activating political environment today than ever. We talk about 2016 presidency election, criticize those candidates’ political claims, argue about political issues and disdain those who belong to different “side” with us. And it is under this social context that Planned Parenthood, all of a sudden, is dragged into the political spotlight.
Taliban, a simple but harsh word to the women living in Afghanistan in the mid-1990s. According to the dictionary.com, "Taliban" is a Muslim fundamentalist group that spread throughout Afghanistan and formed a government. The Taliban started abusing and killing a lot of people throughout Afghanistan just to gain control. The group started by a couple of males trying to spread the Muslim faith. They began to spread throughout Afghanistan and attracted more people to be part of their group. If people were of a different faith and did not want to change, they would get killed or severely abused. They were very sexist and abused the women a lot more then the men. Also the women had to follow a lot more rules then the men. On September 27, 1996 they took over Afghanistan's capital, Kabul's, government. The whole city was demolished and looked horrible and most of the people were living in poverty. A lot of the men had to fight the civil war against al-Qaeda, so the females did not have an income and could not feed their children. The females could not go to work or get an education after the Taliban took over. They also got severely abused if they did not follow any of the rules the Taliban set up.
In Afghanistan girls are forced into marriage as young as 8 years old. If these girls would run away or cause any trouble to their husbands the girls will get sonned, flogged or mutated. Before the Taliban took over the women were allowed to show skin, they were allowed to work and going to school, the women had rights. Then when the Taliban took control over Afghanistan the women weren't allowed to go to school, study, work, they couldn't show any skin, couldn't leave the house without a male chaperone, or get health care from men, and the women couldn't speak in public or be involved in politics. the women's rights were taken away from them. Women in Afghanistan should have more rights because women are getting attacked, they are forced
The novel Lord of the Flies was full of challenges that the boys overcame in order to survive. Conflicts within themselves, with nature and with each other constantly test the children’s ability to endure. Struggles against the natural elements of the island, rival groups or fear of the unknown continually appear throughout the story. Some of the boys on the island did not survive the quarrels that they faced. They perished because they were lacking something that the surviving boys did not. The survivors had a natural primal instinct or a physical or mental advantage over the boys who did not make it. ‘Only the strong survive’ is an important element that runs through the novel Lord of the Flies because in order to survive the boys must turn to their primitive instincts of physical strength and savagery.
“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something. And because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.” (Keller) College is definitely a challenge, but it is also a very beautiful thing. Many students enter college expecting knowledge and a sense of direction. It may be hard to balance school between work, you’re social life, life at home, personal issues, etc. A few challenges that I know about all too well have to deal with money, transportation, and procrastination. You spend all of high school listening to your teachers and parents preparing you for what is to come in the near future. The truth is that there is only one way of truly learning, from experience.
Ever since the Taliban took over they have been violating the rights of their people especially the women. If seen anywhere alone or uncovered the women get punished usually either getting beat or held captive. This is very common for the women in Afghanistan to experience. The Taliban uses the Islamic Koran book as their way of doing things. The Islamic Koran is a sacred book seen as almost like a bible. The Taliban interprets what they get out of this book into their way of life. However their interpretation of it is more of a punishing form for the women. The official name of Afghanistan is the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Afghanistan is known for its great quantity of natural resources such as coal, oil, gas, and extreme amount of opium. Twenty years of war has impacted Afghanistan dramatically, people hurt and dead due to all the war landmines women and children dying and girls prohibited from going to school (Strong). The Taliban is well known for causing chaos and destruction within their own territory. Threatening and making people fear them are their best tactics to get what they want. They even went as far as almost bombing the capital Kabul if the president did not surrender his forces against the Taliban (Kelley). We should care about Afghanistan because the Taliban uses various ways to violate the human rights of women in Afghanistan including rape, beatings, and the prohibiting of being able to go to school.
Ever since the Taliban took over, Afghan women have been faced with extreme violence. The Taliban is a Sunni Muslim extremist group that has a literal and extremely radical interpretation of Islam than most Muslims. The women in Afghanistan will continue to be oppressed because of the violence in their country that the Taliban initiated and the strict laws that limit their basic human rights, education, and medical care.
Women have always been the most affected during times of social and political conflict. An example of a third world country where women have experienced this is Afghanistan. Afghanistan is one of the most challenging places in the world to be a woman. In the article Life as an Afghan women we learn that 9 out of 10 women are illiterate and their life expectancy is 44, one of the lowest in the world. We can also see the causes of all the difficulties of being an Afghan woman. More than fifty percent of Afghan girls are married or engaged by the age of 10. They are forced to marry far older men whom sometimes meet for the first time at their wedding. Afghanistan remains a deeply conservative society, where men dominate and hand out ruling that offer girls and women to settle debts and disputes. Girls that marry at such a young age do not continue their education and are more likely to be abused by their husbands. There is also an unfair division of girls and boys attending school. There are approximately three times more boys attending school than girls. These are some of...
