According to Joe Tye, “Tolkien had an intuitive understanding of the theories and practices of leadership that was well ahead of its time” (Leadership Lessons). This is a concept that even the most common reader of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings can grasp. Without this sense of leadership, particularly different styles of leadership, there would be no one against the other; making for a rather dull plotline and timid movie. The story would lack in substance as it would be difficult to define the good against evil, the right against wrong, and it would essentially consist of many enraged characters running around with no sense of what to do. While every character in The Lord of the Rings generally has a sense of leadership in their own way and are all completely different leaders, the two that are so different yet so essential to the movies are Sauron, the creator of the Ring, and Aragorn, the exiled king.
These two are personified by two vastly different leadership styles. Sauron, an evil lord, is represented by a more conniving, egotistical manner of leadership, who did not do much beneficial work to help his disciples and generally served only to advance towards a better good for himself. Sauron has a general disdain for his followers and could not care less who had to die on the way to his victory. Sauron was only concerned with the position he held and keeping it that way; this is referred to as Coercive Leadership. Alternatively, Aragorn’s style of leadership had a much more advantageous effect where he intended to not improve his current situation, but the situation of his followers and those around him and he worked with a general concern for the ultimate destiny of his followers. Peter Jackson’s film “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” revolves around a young hobbit by the name of Frodo Baggins and his unique group of companions. They go on a journey to destroy the One Ring of Sauron (the Dark Lord). In short, the One Ring has malevolent powers to whomever wears it.
A leader in any tale is an exceptional figure, whether good or evil, they also display tremendous strength above all others be it physical, emotional or mental. Their qualities instill in them a reverence that all of their subjects come to realize and respect. The role of leader is usually first assigned to a different character and upon completion of his journey the main character usually becomes the leader or a figure who has the potential to lead others, the leader is usually a well-known, revered, however they are alone, both figuratively and physically. Beowulf written by an unnamed poet has multiple characters that the reader can identify as leaders, one whom is within the first five lines of the text. Shielf Sheafson, is described as the scourge of many tribes becomes the first Cyng of the Danes. In Sir Gawain the Green Knight also written by an unknown author, features many leaders the greatest of which was King Arthur, followed soon by Sir Gawain and the rest of the Knights of the Round Table. Sir Gawain’s trial is actually a journey to test his leadership girls. At the end, he realizes his error and becomes the leader figure he should be. Finally, Paradise Lost written by John Milton features two leaders, Lucifer and God, though each relies on either end of the section they both in body characteristics of a leader. The leader figure through time has many of the same traits. Each leader carries with them a particular set of characteristics that make them a leader usually through a sacrificing something, there is also a sense of reverence, omnipotence, and solitude.
Leadership can be defined in a myriad of ways; but for the purpose of the question, it is but not limited to the affect someone who takes charge of a group of people with authority or rank; to be an influence to those who look to the leader. In the epic poem, “Beowulf”, there are two different views on leadership based on their leaders {i.e. King Hrothgar and Beowulf). With King Hrothgar, he accepted the help of Beowulf to fight in order to defend the people of the Herodot, “Beowulf my friend/fight for us” (457-458). Due to the understanding of his age, King Hrothgar shows humility and admirable stance, adapts to someone who admires him, allowing Beowulf to fight for the people of Herodot. Beowulf on the other hand, shows his leadership by taking the initiative and offering his aid to King Hrothgar’s people, to fight the demon Grendel, who is terrorizing the people. This leader...

This quote from Gandalf shows him warning Frodo about the power of the Ring in The Fellowship of the Ring: Book One. This quote displays J.R.R. Tolkien’s mistrust of unlimited power, which he expresses in each of his books. He served in World War I where he saw the effects of tyrannical leaders with unlimited power firsthand. Tolkien believed that with great power comes corruption. So, no one person can be trusted to wield so much power. He demonstrates this in each character that has a role of leadership of the different groups of Middle-earth. Galadriel, Boromir, and Saruman, all hold positions of power or influence within their various groups. Beowulf is an ancient epic that connects to the time we live in now. This element discussed in the article, “Beowulf and the teaching of leadership” by Dr. L and Dr. F can mostly be seen in TV, videogames etc. Many movies such as the walking dead. I wasn’t impressed about the information provided, what I did like was the connection they had with the book, also about the potential drawback of charismatic leadership.
Leadership has many definitions and even has become a philosophical question. In today 's world, there are many leadership styles that correspond to people 's personalities and the way they facilitate groups. In its simplest point, a leader is someone who leads. A wise professor once said, "That if you are leading and no one is following you, you are just taking a walk". One of the greatest challenges that leaders face are people. It 's in these interviews I was able to see the differences of how they dealt with people.
