Character Page
Ralph
Ralph is a fair boy of about twelve. He is the first character introduced in the story and is a dominant leader throughout most of the book. He finds the conch, a symbol of order and authority. He blows the conch and holds an assembly in which he is voted chief. Ralph stays focused on getting rescued and building shelters while most of the others play and hunt. By the end all the boys have either turned against him or died.
Piggy
Piggy is a large, timid boy, with asthma and specs (eye glasses). He is Ralph's loyal sidekick from the start. His brilliant mind and logical thinking are trapped inside his unattractive body. He is disrespected and rejected because of his looks, and used for his glasses, which are the only means of starting the fire. Piggy struggles to stay strong and clear through the madness and chaos.
Jack
Jack is the leader of the choir boys who become the first band of hunters. He is intent on becoming savage and killing pigs for meat. He neglects the fire, their only hope for rescue, and goes hunting instead. Jack rebels against Ralph and forms his own tribe at the other end of the Island. His tribe hunts all day and holds feasts and dances every night. His violent instincts show up in murder and destruction as civilization runs out of him.
Simon
Simon is mysterious and spiritual. He is a small boy with incredible, silent, courage and strength. He starts out a part of Jack's choir, then becomes loyal to Ralph when he is elected chief. Simon helps Ralph with the shelters and is admired by the littluns. He has a spiritual encounter with the Lord of the Flies, which is a pig's head on a stick. This encounter is one of the most symbolic incidences in the book. The head is the beast that all the littluns fear and represents the inner instincts and evils in man.
Samneric
In the beginning Sam and Eric are recognized as two separate people, two twin brothers. By the end they are referred to as Samneric, a single being. They were loyal to Ralph in the beginning and throughout most of the book. Towards the end they are captured by Jack's tribe and join in on a hunt for Ralph. They are weak and easily swayed by forceful power.
Plot
The book opens with the description of a beautiful island with pink rocks, warm pools, and a long, palm lined, beach protected by a coral reef.
It is hard to find a perfect match for Piggy. He is full of sensible, bright ideas, but because he is fat, a nerd and wears glasses, no one will listen to him except for Ralph. He was also kind of irritating. For example, he followed the rules too much. If something wasn’t done the way he knew was right, he would get all irate. Then, of course, when it went wrong, Piggy had no hesitation in telling people that he could’ve done it better.
Jack, on the other hand, is doing nothing but causing chaos. Jack fails to realize that the boys need security, stability, and order on the island. Jack was a leader of the choir before the boys landed on the island. These boys, who were in the choir, still want to follow Jack; however, they have no discipline at all. The only thing that is on Jack’s mind is hunting.
In Brazil, the sea plays a special role during this time as Christmas is celebrated with the music of the waves. Countries like Bolivia and Ecuador celebrate with their traditional delightful music to give a sense of pleasure during this season. This novel takes place on a boat like shaped island. There is a jungle, beach, and a lagoon. There are pigs and fish that they can eat, and different fruits.

On Christmas Eve, Greek children go from house to house knocking on doors and singing Greek songs that tell of the arrival of the Christ child. The family celebration focuses on a Christmas Eve dinner, which, in the Greek Orthodox tradition, follows several weeks of fasting. According to legend, mischievous, often hideous looking elves called Kallikantzaroi wreak havoc in houses for the next 12 days. Burning incense or leaving a peace offering is supposed offer some protection against the elves. Most families decorate a small wooden cross with basil and dip it into a shallow bowl of water. This is believed to give the water holy powers. The water is then sprinkled throughout the house to keep the mischievous spirits away.
Summary- The chapter starts with Ralph laying on the ground covered in bruises and thinking about everything. He then goes back to where the twins are to see how they are doing and the twins tell him that Jack is planning to hunt him down to kill him. He then decides to hide in between rocks while they search for him but in the morning Jack finds out where Ralph is. So Jack and his tribe throw the red rock at him but that doesn't works so they try to smoke him out. So Ralph decides to get out of the rock and starts to run to the woods, also there is a boy in the woods is waiting for him so Ralph stabs him and decides to hide. Once they find him again Ralph starts to roll down a hill and ends up in navy officers arms who has a boat. All the boys start to cry because they realize that are being rescued and that they are going home.
As the story progresses, many characters change. Jack, one of the older boys, is viewed as a leader of “The Hunters”. At first, his thirst to hunt is only for an adrenaline rush, but as the story progresses, he turns into a monster. The duties that he has been given by Ralph are looked over, “You said you’d keep the fire going and you let it out!”(Pg 44), and he becomes bloodthirsty, for more than just animals. He wants Ralph’s head, and will stop at nothing until he succeeds. The island changed him, and turned him into a savage because of the lack of structure and authority on the island.
In every culture or tradition we have our different ways to celebrate Christmas. In Latin culture we have our unique way to celebrate the birth of baby Jesus. We of course have religious ceremonies as well as our traditional food, like the famous ponche, posole, and tamales. But we also celebrate as whole family members house. Jack and Ralph have a huge falling out and Jack decides to form his own tribe. ”I’m going off by myself.” (Golding 127). After Jack goes off by himself, his tribe hunts down a pig and removes its head. The head was then mounted on a stick as an offering to the beast in exchange for peace. Although Simon isn’t part of Jack’s tribe, he wanders off into the woods and stares at the pig head. Simon, being the outcast that he is, hallucinates and hears the pig talk. The pig is known as “The Lord of the Flies”. “We are going to have fun on this island!” “Or else” “We shall do you?” (Golding 144). Simon is clearly threatened by his own imagination. When Simon wakes up after passing out, he walks away from the head for a while. He later tramples upon the dead parachuter. He then realizes that there is no real beast. While dragging the parachuter back to the Campsite to prove the lack of a beast on the island, he interrupts a chant initiated by Jack’s tribe and is killed.
