In the novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding the setting had a very strong influence in the actions and attitudes of the characters. Setting is the defined in literature as where the story takes place. In Lord of the Flies, the setting is on a deserted tropical island in the middle of the ocean, where a microcosm is able to be established.
Three specific examples of how setting influenced the actions and attitudes of the characters are: The isolation from a civilized world, the mysteries of an unfamiliar place, and different social types being forced to live with one another. How these examples are to be proven will be developed in the following paragraphs.
Being on an island in the middle of the ocean, cut off the life line, of a highly civilized society, that took hundreds of years to develop. The setting is important to the overall novel studied because it helps highlight major themes in the novel, it further characterizes the motivations of the characters, and helps explain the overall message of the novel. In 1984 by George Orwell, the overall setting of the novel is in London, which is called Airship 1 in Oceania.
The novel starts off with a bunch of boys stranded on a tropical island. This is a perfect place for a group of kids to have tons of fun. The kids have no adult supervision and do not have to worry about getting in trouble by adults. "When the little kids land they are delighted to find hat there are no grown-ups about" (Pg. 210, Forester). This shows that they do not worry about getting in trouble, which will later come back to haunt them. The young boys plan on having a fun time on the island and plan on just goofing around. Ralph shows this several time in the first chapter by swimming in a lagoon and standing on his head. "Ralph lolled in the water"(11). All the kids seem to be happy about being together on the island and plan on being rescued soon. The children in the first section of the book still follow the laws and rules that they had before. Jack "The hunter" cannot bring himself to kill a pig in the beginning of the book. "In his first confrontation with a pig, Jack fails, unable to plunge his knife into living flesh, to bear the sight of flowing blood, and unable to do so because he is not yet far enough away from the ‘taboo of the old life’" (246, Mueller). This shows that the kids still do have morals. Another example of the boys still following the laws and rules of society is when “Roger throws stones at Henry, but he throws to miss because ‘round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law’”(238, Gregor).
Community service hours are a significant issue to all students around the globe, as they are taking a substantial amount of time away from their lives scouring for some kind of work to do. This is especially a problem for those who do not live near any public organizations, and do not have the schedule to do any work for them. Most students go searching around their neighborhood asking if their neighbors have any work for them, which does not help anyone academically. Thus, most community service hours that are done don’t relate to their academic classes or technical area.
President John Adams once said, "There are two kinds of education. One teaches you how to earn a living. The other teaches you how to live” (Adams). I agree with Mr. Adams and I think colleges should provide both types of education. Calling for students to complete community service hours will build the grounds on which they build the rest of their lives. However, many people don’t even give community service a chance. They say they’re too busy, it’s not for them, or simply choose not to do it. At my high school, we were required to complete thirty two hours of community service for graduation; many students came to love it.
When the children become stranded on the island, the rules of society no longer apply to them. Without the supervision of their parents or of the law, the primitive nature of the boys surfaces, and their lives begin to fall apart. The downfall starts with their refusal to gather things for survival. The initial reaction of the boys is to swim, run, jump, and play. They do not wish to build shelters, gather food, or keep a signal fire going. Consequently, the boys live without luxury that could have been obtained had they maintained a society on the island. Instead, these young boys take advantage of their freedom and life as they knew it deteriorates.
How did a departmental faculty generated 12,000 hours of student community service in one semester? The following is a qualitative analysis of conversations with faculty members in a department that recently instituted a service learning requirement for all student majors. The campus is a large urban comprehensive university with a multi-ethnic student body. Approximately fifteen faculty members were interviewed for this study. While most of those interviewed included service learning components in their courses, interviews with faculty members who resisted or refused to incorporate service learning were conducted as well in order to understand varying faculty attitudes towards service learning.

Opposers say, mandatory community service can have several negative effects on students. “Community service hours are impressive additions to college applications and can provide a student with a great sense of accomplishment; however, the mandatory hours will have many negative consequences” (Cydney Hayes, 2012). Many students are barely even passing the regular school curriculum, and opposers believe that adding the additional load of mandatory service hours will discourage teens from even wanting to graduate. Also mandatory service is usually assigned by a court as punishment to delinquents. “In a small number of cases, community service is required by the court system as restitution for delinquent offenses” (Planty and Bozick, 2006).
