In the novel, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Jack’s immorality and manipulation makes him the most compelling character on the island. Others would state how the other boys on the island are more interesting, however, their traits do not impact the story as much as Jack. Making him unique, Jack’s immorality in the novel is revealed through his bloodlust and savagery on the island. One main event in the book that portrays Jack’s immorality on the island is when he and his group of hunters huddle around a pig and brutally murder it. This incident shows the savagery and bloodlust in the group of hunters led by Jack. Jack’s actions towards the slaughter of the pig were not meant for survival, but only meant to fulfill his need to kill something. Others may say that Jack’s actions are not what led to the destruction of the island, but it was Ralph’s fault for him poorly leading, and controlling his community and fixated only on leaving. Nevertheless, my point still stands because Jack’s actions progressively worsen with the story, unlike Ralph, whose actions stay constant to his one objective. Jack’s compelling immorality worsens when he does not feel satisfied with the slaughter of the pig. Jack’s nature makes him different from the other characters because no matter what he does, he will feel no remorse. Jack’s manipulation skills in the novel lead to a split in the community, which leaves him with power and control in the end. This skill is shown when Jack uses fear to gain control, even when he is not chief. He creates this fear by telling the littluns about a “beastie” on the island. Eventually, this gives power to Jack since he realizes he can provide “protection” from the beastie and provide food for the whole community, which the chief can not
