5th Period The true meaning of“Lord of the Flies”.

The “Lord of the flies” has begun to gain popularity across the globe mainly because of the way it was written. The characters were well thought out. They offered a realistic glance into the life of the story. But, with anything good, there tend to be some noteworthy points that made the storyline a bit confusing. One of the main flaws in “Lord of the Flies” was the use of symbols. The symbols were placed randomly and made the flow difficult to manage. For example, one of the main characters’ named Jack. As Jack begins to earn a sense of pride and independence the signal fire usage changes to be a fire that is used to cook the raw, cleaned meat from a pig that has recently been caught by Jack and his hunters. And the only way to gain fire is from stealing the signal fire, which is stated in “Gift for the Darkness” (p. 136) “How can we make a fire?” Jack squatted back and frowned at the pig. “We’ll raid them and take fire. The signal fire does this by wreaking havoc and causing destruction, not only to the island but the boys themselves as individuals. But, ironically, as the story progresses, the fire ended up saving them from future destruction. Throughout “Lord of the Flies” the signal fire represented power; just as it represents power in the Greek mythology of Titan Prometheus. In this myth, it is stated that Titan stole the fire from the Greek god Zeus and gave it to humans. Causing havoc and destruction to arise in mankind, but beautiful things did come out of it. For example, potters; without fire, they’re unable to create their beautiful pieces of art because they need the fire for their kilns.

In conclusion, the signal fire is not just a fire. It represents more than that, throughout the book, the signal fire begins to develop character and suit the personalities of the main characters. For example, Jack and Ralph. In the beginning of the book, the signal fire represents Ralph a very tame and well structured. Furthermore, into “Lord of the flies” Jack is the adverse of Ralph. Jack is an uncontrolled spirit which cannot be tamed, and educated on the vital things. With all this comprehensive information, one is better able to understand the true meaning of the signal fire.
