In the world we live in today, society has set expectations and patterns for us to live by. In the realistic fiction novel Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds, Reynolds shows the readers the expectations society makes us follow by taking the perspective of a 15-year-old boy named Will Holloman who lives in an apartment complex in the hood. At the start of the story, Will’s brother, Shawn, gets murdered and it's up to Will to follow “The Rules.” As he gets onto the elevator to get revenge for his brother’s death, on each floor he meets the ghost of dead loved ones and friends. The theme that Reynolds has created is revenge and in order to fit into society, you have to follow what everyone does or people won’t accept you like what Will, Shawn, and Pops did to get revenge for the guys that killed their loved ones. Reynold uses expectations that society has created to develop the theme of revenge, with Shawn having part of the theme of killing Frick. Will is currently on the last floor with Buck, Dani, Uncle Mark, Frick, and, Pops. Shawn then steps in and greets them all. He doesn’t say anything, doesn’t smile, or hugs back. Will goes up to him and tells him that he has been following the rules and that he is about to kill Riggs. Shawn doesn’t say anything and just stands there. “I stepped toward him, hugged him. He didn’t hug back. Just stood there, awkward, a middle drawer of a man recalled Will(Reynolds, 288).” Will explains that Shawn is a middle drawer man which means that the gun Shawn had was in the middle drawer of his dresser and when Will checked to see if all the bullets were in there, one was missing. Since one bullet was missing, Will knew that Shawn went out and killed Frick because Frick killed Buck, Shawn's best friend. Because of that, Shawn shows that he followed the rules and got revenge.
