Even in today’s complex society, the effects of past colonization can still be felt. The most obvious of these effects on society is a change in the culture of any colonized area or group of people. This is a direct result from the forceful tactics used during historical colonization.
Colonization has occurred throughout history. In Europe, three of the most influential colonizers were the Spanish, the French, and the British. These three countries were driven by three very basic motives: a desire for material gain, a desire to spread religion, and a desire to expand territory.
Britain conquered Burma over a period of 62 years (1824-1886). Burma wasn’t administered as a province of India until 1937, when it became a separate, self-governing colony. This is the arrangement of details surrounding George Orwell’s story of “Shooting An Elephant”. The reader finds oneself in the midst of a colonization struggle between the British and the Burmese. On one hand there is a “Burmese” elephant that needs to be contained, while on the other hand there is a growing number of people joining a crowd that seems to be an obstacle for an imperialist guard’s ability to take control of the situation. The very tension of the crowd following the imperialist guard is the “colonization effect” is felt. This crowd of Burmese civilians expect the guard to shoot and kill this elephant, hence the reason they followed him. The guard finds himself being pressured by the crowd to take care of shooting the elephant. It is this pressure that almost forces the guard to make a hasty, not necessarily the right decision about handling these circumstances. If the guard were to make an error in judgment in direct result from this pressure from the crowd, he would find himself caught in a very bad position. A guard, who is part of a coalition colonizing an area, in the middle (literally) of an angry mob of local civilians unwilling to accept the colonization brought on by this guard’s imperialistic philosophies.
The effects of eighteenth and nineteenth century colonization can still be felt today. When Britain colonized Burma, the English language quickly spread, and the indigenous languages of the natives began to be wiped out.
A true saying is “Colonization often does more damage than contribution.” Colonialism encouraged Africa’s development in some areas, but in many others it severely damaged the natural progress of the continent. If colonialism was never imposed on Africa, Africa’s developments would be significantly different and many of the problems that the continent faces now would not exist today. In conclusion, at first it seems that colonialism has both positive and negative effects, but the truth is it only damages the colonized nation.
In order to understand colonization, it is important to consider the background of the events leading up to colonization. In Spain for instance, the re-conquest of Grenada as well as the search for new trade routes are important events that lead up to colonization. In England, the Civil War between parliament and the monarchy affected colonization as well. The living situation for people in the Holy Roman Empire was deemed not good enough for future generations. The dynamics and developments in Spain, England, and the Holy Roman Empire were all important to the colonization of the New World.
George Orwell’s “Shooting an Elephant” is a short story that not only shows cultural divides and how they affect our actions, but also how that cultural prejudice may also affect other parties, even if, in this story, that other party may only be an elephant. Orwell shows the play for power between the Burmese and the narrator, a white British police-officer. It shows the severe prejudice between the British who had claimed Burma, and the Burmese who held a deep resentment of the British occupation. Three messages, or three themes, from Orwell’s “Shooting an Elephant” are prejudice, cultural divide, and power.
Africa has had a long and tumultuous road of colonization and decolonization; the rush to colonize Africa started in the 17th century with the discovery of the vast amounts of gold, diamonds, and rubber, with colonization hitting a fever pitch during World War I. However, the repercussions of colonization have left deep wounds that still remain unhealed in the 21st century. Early on, European nations such as Britain, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Germany and Belgium scrambled for territories. Countries wanted land so they could harvest the resources, increase trade, and gain power.
In “Shooting an Elephant” writer George Orwell illustrates the terrible episode that explains more than just the action of “shooting an elephant.” Orwell describes the scene of the killing of an elephant in Burma and reveals a number of emotions he experienced during the short, but traumatic event. Effectively, the writer uses many literary techniques to plant emotions and create tension in this scene, leading to an ironic presentation of imperialism. With each of the realistic descriptions of the observing multitude and the concrete appeal of the narrator’s pathos, Orwell thrives in persuading the audience that imperialism not only has a destructive impact on those being governed under the imperialists’ oppressive power, but also corrupts
Exploration led to colonization and was carried out for many reasons but the main reasons include religion, status, economic purposes, resources and militarily tactical purposes. Much of early colonization was for trading of raw materials between continents and countries. Dominant religions sought to spread gospel and “civilize” the indigenous people by making them conform to Western beliefs and ways. Status and recognition was also pursued by country leaders w... ... middle of paper ... ...
Concussions are mostly caused by contact with a person, a teammate, the ground or a piece of equipment or an object. Six players in the AFL retied this year because of concussions. Another disease is called chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE is caused by hits to the head like tackles in football. Over 60% concussions come from football. The guys with the ages 5-18 the 5 leading sports that have the most concussions are bicycling, football, basketball, playground activities and soccer. Every Superbowl the issue of head impacts is on many of our minds it is well known, some football players have a brain disease called tau that causes tissue damage and spreading clumps of protein that can kill and strangle brain cells. With all the concussion concerns he AFL was to broaden the criteria for players pay out for career ending injuries like concussions. In years 2001-2008 kids at ages 5-18 years old accounted for 2.4 million sports related emergencies with 6% of it was concussions that is 135,000 kids. Former NFL star Jeff Beukeboom says “Back in my day, you get hit in the head you bounce right back and it didn’t matter if you had a concussion, you just got up and kept playing”. He said he took about 5-6 concussions and like 10 other bangs to the head. If you play really hard and you have that mentality to win you don’t care if you brake your leg your staying in the game. Head injuries can end up bad, but the effects of head injuries must also be considered. Second Impact syndrome, a term coined in 1995, describes which a person gets a second head injury before the symptoms the first one have gone away. College football players that have had 3 or more concussions are 3.4 times more likely to get another concussion, more than people who have never had a concussion
Too many athletes in today’s sports are getting concussions. “Frequent blows to the head have effects that may last a lifetime, a condition known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy or (CTE)” (Firger). Some symptoms of CTE are depression, memory loss, dementia, anxiety, and aggression. CTE is found in players of all sports, but mainly the NFL.
Religion plays many key roles in Appiah’s analysis such as their ability to remain in the past for certain events like their seating, a form of celebration, for the king. Even though they are able to live in the past for certain ceremonies, Appiah states that the people of Ghana still live very modern lives, doing simple activities that people of modern nations normally do as well. This can even compare to certain states and cities in the United States where people still live their normal lives but then put it on hold and continue their traditions before continuing their average life. A well-known example of this is the Christmas holidays due to the fact that people put their everyday life on pause for a couple of days in order to celebrate
There is no doubt that British imperialism had a large impact on India. From positive affects to negative affects, British colonized India. It all started around the 1600’s when the British East India Company entered India. Only as traders, they entered what was known as the Mughal Empire. Around the 1757 Battle of Plassey the Mughal empire fell (Carrick) and it was only a matter of time until the British Raj took their once in a lifetime chance.
This perspective allows readers to understand the negative ways that colonization affects the colonized. Historical fiction like God’s Bits of Wood and No Longer at Ease are good educational tools to shed light on the history and effects of colonization, but they do not provide a completely reliable source for factual information. God’s Bits of Wood and No Longer at Ease are similar in their displays of linguistic colonization by their colonizers. In both novels, the linguistic colonization affects those colonized by creating conflict between different the social classes and generations.... ...

The Colonization Change: A Look at Tennyson, Mukharji and Rushdie The British Empire had been colonizing for many years, but often times it is forgotten amongst today’s audience the affect that colonization had on millions of people across the globe, and still has an effect on today’s society and people. Colonization was crucial in helping the advancement of industry in Europe, and especially England. The literature published by writers during this era, those from not only England but from the colonized lands, reflects how the colonized people were viewed by the society. Whereas the literature produced by the people of India, Pakistan, Ireland and others, reflect the confusion, distrust and hardship that coming to a new country caused.
Communication is essential to any successful business or workplace. Without it, a business place would simply disintegrate. Communication has two important parts to it. The first part is the transfer of meaning. The second part of communication is the understanding of meaning (Robbins & Judge, 2009). Without both, mutual understanding cannot be reached. Another essential aspect of communication is the direction in which communication is flowing. Upwards, downwards, and later communication all require slightly different techniques and approaches from the person communicating (Robbins & Judge, 2009). I experienced communications with one of my subordinates when I had first arrived at my current job. I was new and the job was a bit overwhelming,
"Shooting an Elephant" is perhaps one of the most anthologized essays in the English language. It is a splendid essay and a terrific model for a theme of narration. The point of the story happens very much in our normal life, in fact everyday. People do crazy and sometimes illegal moves to get a certain group or person to finally give them respect. George Orwell describes an internal conflict between his personal morals and his duty to his country to the white man's reputation. The author's purpose is to explain the audience (who is both English and Burmese) about the kind of life he is living in Burma, about the conditions, circumstances he is facing and to tell the British Empire what he think about their imperialism and his growing displeasure for the imperial domination of British Empire.
