Recommended: Why the traditional grading model is better
Have you ever been in a class where all you do are projects and they are all important grades? Imagine being in a school where instead of having many different small assignments, you have one long term assignment. There will always be someone who does not do as well on the assignment. Those people would not have any way to bring their grade back up because there would be nothing else assigned. This hurts the student by giving them a bad grade in something they may have struggled with even if they worked hard. Long term assignments are not the best way to evaluate students. This way is less effective because you can learn a lot more with multiple assignments, if you do bad on a long term assignment there are no other ways to get your grade up, …show more content…
Long term assignments are going to focus more on a few specific things. When it comes to many other small tasks you can cover much more material. If it is a subject that a student is not good at or not interested in they may learn a lot more and discover that maybe they do like the subject after all. If they are just not good at the class then the student can learn much more when doing small assignments that focus on more material. For example if the class is something such as Chemistry, they can start with the simple things and move to more complex subjects as the class goes on. If you were doing a long term assignment for this class you may learn a few basic things to begin with, but then you will be thrown in to a big project that you do not know anything about. If you already know what you are doing then the long term assignment would not be a problem. But, you are probably in the class because you don’t know much about …show more content…
Not only are you doing a big assignment for one class but you could be doing these for four to five classes. When you have this many projects going on at once it can become very hard to get them all done. Yes, you may have a ton of class time to work on these projects and some of these could be group projects, but, if you attend a school that traditionally does long term assignments you would be doing multiple of them at once. This would not be easy. Put yourself in the position of having three projects due in two weeks and none of them are completely finished. They are all important and you don’t know which one to prioritize. It comes down to the day before they are due and you are up at three in the morning trying to finish all three projects to turn in when you go to school. This is not a situation anyone wants to be in and long term assignments are a disaster that should not be used to evaluate
...t the last year of high school would be less agonizing without a laborious issue such as a Culminating Project, to attend to. Therefore, these points have been covered: what the project is, examples of different advocators of the project, and the different viewpoints of why it is useful verses why it is not. Hopefully, this can change the ideals and opinions of the administrators and enforcers of the Senior Project, to consider what a hindrance it is.
This final project felt like a standard working environment for a graphic designer. Multiple projects given and due at the same time. This was challenging because I had to juggle between three different projects at the same time. One of the most challenging part of the projects was trying to coordinate the design and colors of the three projects to make it look cohesive. I had to choose colors that would work well for all the
Giving students a grade that they have not earned hinders the youth’s future educational success. A number of schools are no longer giving a grade of zero on assignments, tests, and exams completed by students. While other school districts continue to give students the grade that is adequate for the work they have done or have not completed. Giving students the grade that equals their work is designed to show students where they need to improve. Many school boards want to stop giving out zeros for work that hasn’t been turned in and give a grade that rages around the “D” area keeping children from falling behind in their classes. By allowing student to pass through the school system the educational board is raising their graduation and success
Students are not prepared for the stress coming from the University workload when they leave high school. In high school students are assigned a major project, then it is weeks before they are assigned another. Teachers give students weeks, if not months to prepare for a major assignment. High school teachers also accommodate for tests or projects in other classes. When students get to University, they are assigned many major assignments at the same time in different courses and have very little time to complete them. Because of the Ontario School System, students are not prepared for the stresses of a University workload.
It would be better for a students mental health to have to deal with a lot of stress due to an assignment less often. Also, when the passing of a class is determined by one or two tests, this prepares students for even bigger tests worth even more when they leave undergraduate school and start graduate school or apply for a competitive job. Having your grade depend on two tests can be very stressful but, this is preparing students for there future. They will begin to get used to high stake tests and learn how to prepare for them which is a necessary skill. Dealing with stress and getting work done on time and to the best of your ability is very important for a future after
The issue I alluded to during our conversation does not simply deal with one assignment. It is an issue I've experienced multiple times throughout high school and is most egregious in your class. This issue is the fact that different students are graded differently based on some arbitrary measure. When a teacher grades each student's assignment to a different standard, it devalues the work of the students.
Keeping an updated calendar or agenda keep students aware of when an assignment is due. Students can set due dates on the calendar in their phone. If the student does not have or is not allowed to have electronics they can purchase an agenda or calendar for cheap. Some schools supply students with an agenda to make sure they keep up with due dates on major assignments and other work. If students are involved in any extracurricular activities, they should set certain times and dates on when to complete an assignment. It is important to know how to balance out of school activities with school work. Starting their work early and getting ahead is another way students can manage their time to finish the assignment. As soon as students is assigned the assignment they should get started right away. Friends and family members can also help remind one when his or her assignment is almost due, so it is completed on time. When procrastinating one do not learn to discipline themselves therefore their work suffers, and the student get stressed out. Not being able to manage your time can be stressful and can cause students to not want to fully complete their assignment. Procrastination can also cause students to get less sleep than
Hindering a student’s performance with a bad grade in the middle of the year can make them give up for the rest of the year. Once a student has received a bad grade they might lose faith in their academic ability. By giving up a student does not reflect their academic ability and their bad grades are not based on what they learned.
This is only my third class in the Wilkes Instructional Media Program but I can say with certainty that it was the hardest. The class is about Project Based Learning so it only makes sense that part of it would be doing a project. But doing so on the computer with people you have not met and probably never will meet makes it hard. Add to that the fact you’re all teaching in different grade levels and you’re starting with two strikes against you before you even start. At least, that’s how I felt.
They did not "procrastinate", rather, they did not have time to do it any earlier. Though students can benefit from the projects if they are not rushed, only a few students get that opportunity. Most students have sports or other after school activities and do not return home until later at night, around 9PM or 10PM. Normal homework is stressful enough for anyone. Making the project may be alright, but forcing students to present them without being mentally prepared does not help.
When I first signed up for this class, I thought that it would be easy since it was a summer course. This was somewhat the case. The class overall was not hard but there was a lot of assignments to keep up with. When I first started my summer courses I had trouble managing my time and completing my assignments in a reasonable time. As the semester came to an end, I believe that I have grown in terms of time management. I still procrastinate sometimes on little things but not as much as I did in the beginning. I am happy that I learned so many great writing tips so early on in my college career so that it can help me further down the road.
These things alone will not help get good grades, the student 's have to put effort into everything that they do. Just do one assignment at a time, do not worry about assignments in the future or the current grades will be effected because the student is not putting enough effort into them. Tests count as the majority of the grade, so when it comes time to take it,
Students make the same projects year in and year out because they do not have easy
I work in the day and attend school in the evening so it is critical for me to know how to manage my time effecteively. However my workload at work had became extremely unpredictable and with the weekly assignments for the FOUN1019 course it was very difficult for me to manage my time. I usually create a list of task I have to complete with the date it needs to be completed, then work on them individually to meet the due date. I realised this alone was not a very effective method for completing my assignment or managing time because I did not consider the preparation some of the task required. I then decided to approach my task differently to ensure that I was able to complete the weekly FOUN1019 assignment as well as other course work and the meet my deliverables at work. I kept making my list but I broke my task down into smaller task and allocate a time slot for finishing it eg. FOUN1019 Essay Outline would have several subtask: write introductory paragraph, write first body paragraph, write sentence outline for remaining body paragraphy and draft essay outline. I found this method to helped me to accomplish more task because I was more resoureful with my
