Explore the implication of loneliness in John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men. In the light of the American economical collapse, there were a significant number of itinerant workers, who lived in a nomadic lifestyle, migrating in search of jobs. This continuous migration deterred them from building substantial relationships. Due to the lack of companionship and depression of the era, it appears that the characters are bound to loneliness. Most of the characters in John Steinbeck’s novel ‘Of Mice and Men’ are caught in the trap of loneliness. To escape from the terrible fate in reality, all the characters that are lonely have a dream. George and Lennie, for example, dream the American Dream of Going to the West and owning some land. Although he has Lennie to look after and care for, George is one of the loneliest characters in the book. However even if Lennie cures some of George’s loneliness, he is a constant trouble to him, which makes George constantly on a move, without a fixed job. This does make George lonelier-, as he has no fixed relations. We know this from the fact that he plays solitaire. Solitaire symbolises solitude. George very often quotes, “We ranch workers are the loneliest in the world.” However being with Lennie helps him to get rid of some of his loneliness. When Lennie says that he “would go and live in a cave”, George stops him, as he knows that without Lennie he would be even more depressed. Candy also dwells in the depths of dreariness. Being old, he is excluded and is thus a sufferer of ageism. He is also a cripple, due to which he is isolated from others. He says, ”They’ll can me purty soon”- as soon as he is no longer able to work. His loneliness is escalated after Carl... ... middle of paper ... ...r place, an’ sometimes, I went to play with them, and some of them were pretty nice.” However George and Lennie’s dream also attract him. Curley’s wife dreams of being an actress in the films in the Hollywood and says that she would have acted in ‘pitchers’. She thinks that her life is wasted as she has married to Curley. She says that she knows people from the film industry who said that she was ‘natural’ in acting. Curley dreams that he would one day be a lightweight boxer. All the characters know that their dream is never going to be fulfilled. We can say so as Crooks quotes, “ nobody never gets to heaven and nobody gets no land.” However at the same time they know that they would be even lonelier if they do not have these dreams. Thus the dreams give them the much-needed dignity, and provide them a source to overcome loneliness in a form of escape.
She flirts with the other characters on the ranch but they pay her no attention either. This essay will go on to look at the character of Curley's wife and how characters perceive her. When first introduced to Curley's wife in the novel she comes into the bunkhouse, when both Lennie and George are in there. She is apparently looking for Curly but she already knows that new men have arrived.
John Steinbeck, an American novelist, is well-known for his familiar themes of depression and loneliness. He uses these themes throughout a majority of his novels. These themes come from his childhood and growing up during the stock market crash. A reader can see his depiction of his childhood era. In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck shows the prominent themes of loneliness, the need for relationships, and the loss of dreams in the 1930s through the novels’ character.
... got that letter” which illustrates her crushed dreams therefore destining her to the stereotypical woman. Consequently, we feel sympathy, not only for Curley’s Wife but for all women and even men in the 1930s who had dreams and aspirations that were never to be fulfilled (for example George and Lennie’s dream.)
In his novel Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck depicts the essential loneliness of California ranch life in the 1930s. He illustrates how people are driven to find companionship. There were so many moments of loneliness and sadness throughout the novel, including many deaths. Following the deaths, they were very unexpected making the novel more intense and latch onto it more.
In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, George Milton is shown many times playing the game of Solitaire, a card game which requires only one man and a pack of playing cards. His companion, Lennie Small is never asked to play cards or other games because George knows emphatically that Lennie is incapable of such a mental task. Although Lennie and George are companions, George has the idea of being "solitaire" to be no longer burdened by Lennie's company. Solitaire, meaning alone, is a metaphor for the loneliness that many of the characters feel in the novel. John Steinbeck shows in Of Mice and Men, that all human beings are essentially alone.
In the novel, Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck used George and Lennie's relationship and the theme of hope to point out the loneliness in the novel. The novel starts off and is set in Soledad which means lonely. At the beginning they get a job working on a farm together. Lennie is a little retarded and has great physical strength that isn't too controllable. As they work from ranch to ranch, Lennie relies on George for guidance and help. Rather than wasting their earnings, they try to save it in the hope of buying a place of their own. While working at one ranch they meet a worker named Candy who tries to help them financially. Before their dream can be fulfilled, Lennie kills the wife of the boss's son. As the novel concludes George must kill Lennie for his own benefit. Later Lennie goes into town and abandons his dream by spending his money.
Curley’s Curley’s wife represents her broken dreams of becoming an actress. Lennie and George represent a dream in progress, it is uncertain if their plans will work out as intended or plummet before takeoff, even Crooks and Candy see the appeal in Lennie and George’s fantasy and join them. The dream in progress gives hope to Lennie and George and continued to even after losing previous jobs. Curley’s wife is constantly restricted, she married Curley so that she would no longer be alone but now is in the same state as before, just on a ranch of men.
The last character of Broken dreams is Curley’s wife because she could of been an actress but her mom said she was too young. In the novel Of Mice and Men curley’s wife her mom would not her do it. So then she had met Curley but then later on she end sup not liking him and that's why she talks to all the boys. So then her dreams never came true all she wanted to become was an actress but then she got killed by Lennie because she let him touch her hair but then she tried running and he snapped her

Loneliness and Companionship are one of the many themes that are conveyed in the novel Of Mice and Men, By John Steinbeck. Many of the characters admit to suffering from loneliness within the texts. George sets the tone for these confessions early in the novel when he reminds Lennie that the life of living on a ranch is among the loneliest of lives. However Lennie, who is mentally disabled holds the idea that living on a farm very high. "Tending the rabbits" is what Lennie calls it. Often when Lennie is seaking encouragement he askes George to tell him how its going to be. The feeling of being shipped from place to place leaves George feeling alone and abandoned.
The great and famous author john Steinbeck once said, “All great and precious things are lonely.” In the Steinbeck book Of Mice and Men, many of the characters show their loneliness in many different ways. Candy, Curley's wife, and Crooks all show perfect examples of how they are lonely. This foreshadows that she may cause trouble or come in the way and could ruin it all for Lennie and George. Steinbeck also describes her as a ‘girl’, which tells us that. She is very playful, childish and vulnerable. Curley’s wife is trying to make herself attractive by applying make. up and dressed up as if she was going to a party.
Curley’s Wife’s dream was to be an actress, but fate had other plans. When she was just a girl, she dreamed of being in the movies and even met an actor who could finally allow her to achieve her dreams
“‘A guy goes nuts if he ain’t got nobody. Don’t make no difference who the guy is… I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an’ he gets sick,” (Steinbeck 73). In this statement, Crooks, a character in John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, divulges what effect loneliness can have on a human being. In the novel, the two main characters escape to a ranch where they must face the conflict that seems to follow them. Set in the 1930s during the Great Depression, Steinbeck brilliantly portrays the loneliness and suspicion that was common during the time. Much like in everyday life, we can see the way in which loneliness drives people to become isolated, crave companionship, and refuse to express emotion.
