Loneliness and Isolation in Baldwin’s, Here be Dragons I am not a targeted minority and I have never felt discriminated against, but I certainly have found my self weighed down, unable to keep up, in the constant rush and roar that is our society. I have felt isolated and left behind by everything around me, and this utter loneliness is not something that is easy to deal with. This loneliness inevitably turns to self-hatred as I ask myself why I can’t keep pace with everyone else when they seem to be doing just fine? Reading James Baldwin has reminded me that I’m not alone, and that there are many ways to deal with the isolation one feels within society. For some, struggling to keep afloat in the mainstream as it rushes along is the most comprehensible way, but for others, like Baldwin, it’s easier to simply get out of the water and walk along the bank at his own chosen pace. In Baldwin’s “Here be Dragons” he addresses the issues of loneliness and isolation in many ways. In the end, he comes to the conclusion that everyone has a part of everyone else inside of him or her, much like a yin yang: “…we are all androgynous…because each of us, helplessly and forever, contains the other-male in female, female in male, white in black and black in white. We are a part of each other”(160). If we are all a part of each other, then we do not need to try to keep up with the current of society to stay connected with the world. We can go wherever we please, whenever and however, and never have to fear the loss of the vital links that keep humans human. In the beginning of his story Baldwin speaks of his young adolescence during which various men constantly take advantage of him. In this part of life he speaks much of loneliness. First, as he talks about those who are literally androgynous, containing male and female parts, he guesses at the “…all-but-intolerable loneliness…”(150) that they must feel at not being able to find love by being themselves for fear of humiliation at being so different. Later, he tells of his many encounters with men that appeared to be stereotypical American citizens looking “…like cops, football players, soldiers…or bank presidents…construction workers…”(153). These men would accost Baldwin in dark movie theaters and in the alleys at night begging or bullying him to take them to bed.
In his essay, “On Being Black and Middle Class” (1988), writer and middle-class black American, Shelby Steele adopts a concerned tone in order to argue that because of the social conflicts that arise pertaining to black heritage and middle class wealth, individuals that fit under both of these statuses are ostracized. Steele proposes that the solution to this ostracization is for people to individualize themselves, and to ‘“move beyond the victim-focused black identity” (611). Steele supports his assertion by using evidence from his own life and incorporating social patterns to his text. To reach his intended audience of middle-class, black people, Steele’s utilizes casual yet, imperative diction.

The essay James Baldwin is structured into three different sections that describe how Baldwin grew to understand that he has to embrace who he is and his past. One section of the essay talks about Baldwin as a young boy and his relationship with his father. It also tells about Baldwin’s experiences in New Jersey when he grows a little older. Another section describes the racial tension and riots in Harlem and how Baldwin’s father is ill and dying in the hospital. The third section is about how the riots grow and become more intense. Also, Baldwin is attending his father’s funeral and celebrating his nineteenth birthday. At the beginning of the essay Baldwin talks about how him and his siblings are scared of his father and how angry and stubborn his father was. As a young man Baldwin went to New jersey and experienced segregation for the first time. At a restaurant where he wasn't served because of the color of his skin he exploded with anger. All of his
Isolation can be a somber subject. Whether it be self-inflicted or from the hands of others, isolation can be the make or break for anyone. In simpler terms, isolation could range anywhere from not fitting into being a complete outcast due to personal, physical, or environmental factors. It is not only introverted personalities or depression that can bring upon isolation. Extroverts and active individuals can develop it, but they tend to hide it around crowds of other people. In “Richard Cory,” “Miniver Cheevy,” The Minister’s Black Veil,” and “Not Waving but Drowning,” E.A. Robinson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Stevie Smith illustrate the diverse themes of isolation.
.... Those who opposed to those outrageous classifications were label as ignorant. Society gave African Americans no other alternative but to accept the social remarks imposed towards them, and if not they were classified as insane. Andrew Heberek discusses the psychological and emotional problems African Americans faced in society due to social remarks. Some of the problems Heberek discussed are African Americans lack of individualism. Mozora Sandler and David Briggs in their study incorporated the percentage of African Americans who are discriminated in American society. Marjorie Pryse and Michael Hardin both incorporate the inner struggles African Americans were facing in society and how their identity was interfered. Overall, the social remark American society has imposed towards the minority has led the majority of African Americans to be invisible.
Well known author Gretchen Rubin once said, “Keep in mind that to avoid loneliness, many people need both a social circle and an intimate attachment. Having just one of two may still leave you feeling lonely.” In the novel Of Mice And Men written during the Great Depression by author John Steinbeck loneliness is one of the main themes throughout the story. In this essay I will be writing about how loneliness affects three of the characters, George, Crooks, and Curley's unnamed wife.
Stereotypes are created in today’s society for people who are deemed as different, not dominant, or unprivileged. Those who do not fall into a stereotype are often seen as privileged. One of the largest, and longest lived stereotype is race, specifically those who are African American. It is seen as a privilege to be viewed and treated as a white person, while those who fall into any other race are viewed and treated as being different. Recently, I have become very aware of difficulties facing the minorities. Before I witnessed an incident, I had been blind to the fact that there are privileges and so many stereotypes in today’s society. This blindness that I was experiencing, however, “is an aspect of privilege itself, … ‘the luxury of obliviousness’”
The works of James Baldwin are directly related to the issues of racism, religion and personal conflicts, and sexuality and masculinity during Baldwin's years.James Baldwin's works, both fiction and nonfiction were in some instance a direct reflection his life. Through close interpretation you can combine his work to give a "detailed" look into his actual life. However since most writings made by him are all considered true works of literature we can't consider them to be of autobiographical nature.
In each of the short stories that I read, the authors discussed a particular group of people, either grouped by their race, or chosen identity be it religion, personal beliefs or in the case of Understanding Comics (McCloud) a person’s chosen form of expression. Each author explored how mainstream society as a whole, often have a preconceived perceptions of what a person is like, based on the group that they have placed them in. For example in Forty Acres and a Gap in Wealth, Gates opens up by explaining that blacks in current society can no longer be thought of as one mass of peoples, due to changes in society in the last decade that have brought about a greater divide in values between lower income and middle class income blacks, than there is between middle class blacks and whites (48). However society as a whole still insists on grouping people by their ethnicity – and perceiving them all as if they have the same needs, goals and background which simply is not the case.

Grammar is also vital to a well-organized essay. I have shown through my writing that I excel at creating grammatically correct essays. For example, the thesis in one of my essays, “The Clean Water Act has been successful and effective in past years in controlling certain types of polluta...
Oppression is something we 've all witnessed. But how does oppression really affects individuality, community, and society? Evidently, certain members of oppressed groups continue to struggle for equality and opportunity, particularly during times of when money is tight. More specifically, the borders of races and ethnicities touch economic opportunity, political representation, as well as income and social mobility of people of color. However, there are factors of what influences people to become an oppressor or oppressed, or to have even slight racial views. In Richard Wright’s case in his autobiographical novel, Black Boy, Wright had been raised in Pre-Civil Rights America, where oppression is present and prevalent in the South, as well

Everywhere we go, we see people who experience prejudice from other people. Prejudice is an act of injustice toward other people based on stereotypes and other unreliable data. It creates embarrassment, hate, and fear to some people everyday. In this modern-day and age, it is unbelievable to think that people still suffer from the ignorance of prejudice. Through these articles “Black Men and Public Space,” by Brent Staples and “Occupied Los Angeles: Eviction,” by James Butler it becomes clear that prejudice brings negative feelings to the hearts of the victims, that cause them to fear and to hate.
Chuck Berry played a huge part in the influencing and evolving of the genre known as “Rock n Roll,” he was such a big influence that he was known
