Faith Thompson November 16th, 2015 JMHS Period 8 English What is loneliness? Loneliness is an intricate and usually emotional reaction to isolation or absence of companionship. In the book ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck many characters such as Crooks and Curley’s Wife have experienced loneliness. Crooks is lonely because he is black. Curley’s wife is lonely due to being the only female at the ranch and having no one to converse with. In ‘Of Mice and Men’ Crooks is lonely because he is black. According to the story it states “There wasn’t another colored family for miles around.
And now there ain’t a colored man on this ranch.” Crooks feels alienated from the other workers due to his race. In ‘Of Mice and Men’ it also states “I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an’ he get sick.” Crooks is trying to explain that he sometimes gets sick as a result of his loneliness. In addition to blacks having no rights during the Great Depression women also had no rights. Curley’s wife experiences extreme loneliness because she is the only female on the ranch and is kept away from men. In the story it states “Think I don’t like to talk somebody ever once in a while?” Curley’s wife feels secluded because she has no one to communicate with. Based on the story it also states “Sat’iday night! Ever’ body doin’ sum’ pin’. Ever’ body! An’ what am I doin’?” As a result to not having anyone to talk to, Curley’s wife feels isolated because she cannot interact with the men at the ranch. Although some people may think Candy is the loneliest character due to being old and crippled, Crooks and Curley’s wife are the loneliest characters because of racism (Crooks) and sexism (Curley’s wife). Crooks feels alienated from the other workers because of his race. Curley’s wife feels secluded from the others because she is the only female at the ranch. In conclusion, many characters in ‘Of Mice and Men’ have experienced loneliness. Crooks feels lonely because he is black. Curley’s wife is lonely because she is the only female at the ranch and she has no one to converse with.

This sometimes causes people to create rage (mentally, and physically). This can also sometimes cause death, for yourself or someone else. So in this book, what John Steinbeck is trying to say about loneliness is that, the people are lonely because of their physical features and this involves Candy, Curley’s Wife and Crooks. As stated, when people feel lonely their actions and way of life are affected. In the plot they show that if it wasn't for Curley's Wife's loneliness she may not have died the way she did. Because she is so lonely she goes to the other men in the bunkhouse for company. When all of the men refuse to spend time with her because of the reaction Curley has on this, she goes to the one person on the ranch that she knows will talk to her, the mentally retarded man, Lennie. While talking to him she asks him to feel her hair, which he does and this leads to her death by breaking her neck. If it wasn't for Curley's Wife's loneliness, she would have never gone to Lennie for company and she wouldn't have died on that day in that way. Because this happens in the novel and there are so many other lonely characters in the novel, such as Curley, Candy, Crooks and George in the end, the theme of the novel Of Mice and Men is loneliness and the need for companions.

So being black means that he is isolated from everyone else at the ranch. Speaking of isolation, curley's wife feels very isolated because her husband, Curley, doesn't trust her at all, however, because Curley is so strict and concerned about her flirting with other guys it almost fuels her desire to cause trouble.
