Everyone needs someone to not be lonely. In the story “Shells” cynthia Rylant writes about a boy named Michael whose parents have died and her Aunt has to take him in. As a result Michael got lonely and Aunt Esther was originally lonely to start. To overcome their loneliness they need someone to care for. Michael is lonely and sad. his parents died and his Aunt Esther has to take him in (74). Cause of Michael’s parents being dead he is lonely. aunt Esther and Michael do not get along. That causes them to be even more lonely. Michael needed someone to care for. On page 76, Michael goes to a pet store and gets a pet crab. The reason he gets the crab is because he is very lonely. While he is living with his aunt he doesn’t have anyone to care
for. So he got the crab to have someone to care for. Michael and Aunt Esther found out they needed each other. On page 80 michael said that he liked her. Michael got the nerve by naturally coming out of his shell like Sluggo (his crab). he showed Esther the crab (77) then everything started to get better between how they like each other. Michael says “No, Aunt Esther.” “I don’t hate you.” (80) That really made Esther feel that Michael really liked him then their relationship would go from there. Everyone needs someone to not be lonely. Cynthia Rylant the author of “Shells” writes about two unlike people who cared for each other to overcome loneliness. This shows that anyone can overcome loneliness by breaking out of their shell to show they care for people.
When Michael's parents die he has to go live with his Aunt Esther even know he hates her. In paragraph number 24 for example, Michael's aunt says “ You hate living here.”Michael really does but he just doesn’t want to admit it to her and make her feel bad. Michael is mad at his aunt and he wants a friend so he goes to the pet store. Slugo is the crab he gets and he also gets a new home from michael because he brought him home from the store. This shows that as soon as slugo came to his house everything started to change. When Aunt Esther says that “Oh,What would your mother think, if the could see this mess we’ve gotten ourselves into!” In paragraph 56 it tells how Michael realizes that his mom and dad are not coming back.Aunt Esther thinks that Michael is ready to talk about his mother and father's death Then when Michael says “ I don't hate you. “ In paragraph 64 show Michael realizes that aunt esther is doing a lot to help him in the end of the story .

Generally classes as a period of heightened cognitive discomfort and uneasiness from being oneself“ (Psychology Dictionary1). Nathaniel Hawthorne’s works such as “Rappaccini's Daughter,”“Ethan Brand,” and “Young Goodman Brown” have characters, that embody the definition of loneliness. It is clear these short stories have lonely characters that have hit rock bottom. Not only are the characters in these stories lonely, but they are insane as well. In each of short stories, Hawthorne shows that the state of being lonely causes the characters to become insane.

In Carson McCullers's The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, John Singer earned the confidence of many of the characters, such as Jake Blout, Biff Brannon, Mick Kelly, and Dr. Copeland. In relation to the title of the book, all the main characters are lonely in some way, including John Singer. Singer is a handicapped with his disability to speak as well as hear but on the other hand, he has an open heart and is not deaf to people’s problems. His loneliness is as a result of the fact that he does not have any real friend, except Spiros Antonapoulos, another disabled man who listened attentively to their problems and did nothing but give to them. Singer was the confidant of many characters and earned the hearts of the reader as well as those of the characters.
Loneliness plays an extremely large part of Miss Brill’s life and can be proven by things in the story. An example of Miss Brill’s lack of companionship is when she visits the park on Sunday’s. Not only did she look forward to listening to the band but she also looks forward to seeing what is going on with the lives of the others. “She had become really quite expert, she thought, at listening as though she didn’t listen, at sitting in other people’s lives just for a minute while they talked around her.” The reader can clearly see that she has perfected eves dropping as if it was a talent. Unlike those who take interest in chess or a game of spades her game consists of listening in on others and then acting as if she isn’t. She has found herself living vicariously through others by eves dropping in on conversations that do not include her. Sometimes she finds herself taking parts of these conversations and begins to role-play as if she is an actress.

Aunt Esther is very different from his mother and father. Aunt Esther is selfish and prejudice, all she cares about is herself. In the beginning, Aunt Esther yells “You hate it here.” In paragraph twenty, Michael confesses to the reader. “And although he denied it he did hate Esther. She was so different from his mother and father.” This shows that Michaels and Esther's relationship isn't going so well.
Miss Brill’s loneliness causes her to listen in on conversations. This is her only means of achieving a sense of companionship. She feels that for a moment she is “sitting in other people’s lives just for a minute” (98). Aside from that, she is part of no one’s life.

Michael’s consistent rejection towards his Mother and Father exposes to Josh that having a missing family member is almost parallel to having a missing piece of a jigsaw. Early in the novel, his Mother’s antics indicate that Michael needs to come home to fill the hole in her heart otherwise it’ll eventually tear it apart. She still maintains hope admitting that even after Michael left, she would “give [Michael] money if he said the right things” (p. 63), especially when he sweat talked his way into her pockets like saying “that he loved her” (p. 63) because “she was always a sucker for that line” (p. 63). Not only does his Mother express the sorrow of being parted with her son, but his Father also expresses signs of distress. Later on, Josh mentions to Michael that “[Dad] cares about you more than I do, or Hayley, or even Mum” (p. 215), allowing Michael to know that his Father still cares and thinks about him. These encounters involving Michael and his parents prove to Josh that family is like branches on a tree. They may grow in different directions but what stays the same is the root that it all started from. How many individuals allow the fear of loneliness overtake their whole lives? Life is fickle and most people will be a victim of circumstance at times. This is why “ A Rose for Emily” is such a great read because it allows readers to stop and analysis if they are the type of individuals which allow loneliness take over their own personal life’s. However, some people choose not to let circumstance rule them and, as they say, “time waits for no man”. Faulkner’s Emily did not have the individual confidence, or maybe self-esteem and self-worth, to believe that she could stand-alone and succeed at life especially in the face of changing times. As a mater of fact, she had always been ruled by, and depended on, men to protect, defend and act for her. From her Father, through the manservant Tobe, to Homer Barron, all her life was dependent on men. In this story I will be discussing how fear can make indivuals due senseless things.
American Author, Barbara Lazear Ascher, draws a fine line between loneliness and self-reliance in her short story, The Boxman. Ascher’s purpose of writing this short story is to make women aware of the fact that the only person that they can depend on is themselves so that later in life they can avoid the risk of being let down. She adopts a tone of admiration towards the “boxman,” the people who are content with being by themselves, to instill a sense of desire to be like the boxman into the group of women who are consuming her literature. Asher effectively highlights the subtle difference between being lonely and being self-sufficient through the use of syntactical and linguistic techniques.
