With each passing second, our society is becoming more dystopian without our realization. One day we will wake up from our trance and realize that we do not recognize the world we live in anymore. People, especially in the United States, believe they are independent and are free to make their own decisions in life. These people are acting naïve and lying to themselves. We are all simply part of a society that either forces us to listen to its ideas or silently makes us believe we came to these ideas under our own free will. As human beings, we want to feel in control of our own lives, but that simply is not the case. Lois Lowry said this in her book The Giver, "How could someone not fit in? The word dystopian has multiple meanings and characteristics that are all intertwined together depending on the situation. In the book, The Giver, these characteristics include constant surveillance, control over society, and an expectation to conform to society’s demands are on display. Lois Lowry has a colored past that has allowed her to write this book which has opened the doors to a whole new genre of literature. She once said that the real reason people struggled to let go of this book was its ambiguous ending (Connelly). What that means is we struggle with the lack of a feeling of closure or a conclusion. Following through with something tell the end is in human nature, but what if there is no end? This idea applies to our society as well. We want to know how everything will conclude, but that is not possible. As humans, if we cannot know how it will end than our best remaining option is to follow everyone else. People do not like to be different from the norm. When people stray from the society’s expectations, it exposes them to the world as different.
