Is there a real world? I believe so, but based the concepts of Locke, Barkley and Hume, the real world isn’t actually how I perceive it to be.

According to Locke, sensations such as color, taste, sound, and odor are produced by the powers, the arrangement of matter, of primary qualities. Secondary qualities exists in the sense that objects have the ability to act on our senses and create sensations or impressions like color, smell, taste, touch, sound, and temperature. These sensations are explained to be produced because of the size, shape, texture, motion, and weight of miniature units of matter that everything is made up of. Locke reasons that we can explain everything by putting forward the existence of primary qualities, so we don’t necessarily need to believe that secondary qualities have any premise in the real …show more content…
An example used is an objects color, the color is a part of our perception of the color and not a part of the object or a result of the power of the object.
For his argument against Locke, Berkeley begins with discrediting the idea of secondary qualities existing in objects. Two secondary qualities elaborated on were sensation and taste. With sensation, water can’t be cold and hot at the same time. If your hand temperature is higher than the temperature of the water, than the water will be perceived as cool and vice versa, so the perception of the temperature of the water must be in the perceiver. With taste as well, the same item can be perceived as pleasurable and distasteful depending on the perceiver and not the object.
I touched a little bit on the next point that Berkeley made, which is that perceptions are relative. The secondary qualities used to prove this point were color and speed. Relating to color, depending on the perspective of a person, two people can look at the same object and believe to see two different colors. Relating to speed, the example used was someone looking at people on a train. Of course the people on the train are moving at a consent speed but seems to be standing still, which is another example of how perception is relative to the
One of Locke’s largest points is "All ideas come from sensation or reflection” (Locke 101). He thinks that man is completely blank when they are born and that their basic senses are what gives them knowledge. Locke states, “Let us then suppose the mind to be, as we say, white paper” (Locke 101). This paper will examine the reliability of George Berkeley’s metaphysical theory of Idealism. Berkeley’s Idealism holds that reality is made real by what the mind perceives and that what we perceive to be material is really a collection of immaterial sensations. Idealism is defined as the view “that only mental entities exist, so physical things exist only in the sense that they are perceived” (“Idealism”). Berkeley’s argument of Subjective Idealism is the view that reality consists of one’s mind and its ideas, while Objective Idealism says in addition, a supreme mind produces ideas in the physical world that do not depend on human minds to exist (Velasquez 146). Without Objective Idealism, one can undergo solipsism which is the belief that only one’s self and experiences of the world are real and everything else does not exist (“Solipsism”). Opposing Idealism is the metaphysical view of Materialism which holds that only physical things exist (“Materialism”). This paper will start by examining George Berkeley’s views of Subjective and Objective Idealism and how they apply to reality. Then, the critiques made and supported by Aristotle and Thomas Hobbes against both views of Idealism will be argued. However, these arguments fail to properly examine Berkeley’s Idealism, thus causing the critiques to be based upon misinformation. Although the criticisms pose potential flaws, Berkeley’s Idealism continues to be a major discussion in the metaphysical debate.
Let us then suppose the mind to be, as we say, white paper void of all characters, without any ideas. How comes it to be furnished? Whence comes it by that vast store which the busy and boundless fancy of man has painted on it with an almost endless variety? Whence has it all the materials of reason and knowledge? The Egocentric Predicament is a problem associated with our ideas and how we perceive the world. Locke believes all knowledge come from personal ideas; these ideas are based upon our perception of the world. However, if we only see the world based on our own ideas how can there be any external or objective world. This begs questions similar to; can I really know an objective world exists? If there is no external world do any other minds –or ideas- other than my own exist? How can we ever test reality if it is our own mental construction? Locke concludes that we do have some knowing in relation to the subjective and objective reality that they do exist, but that we do not have a clear idea between one and of the other.
Let us take the example of knowledge of the perfectly equal -- the Equal. Nothing in the world of space and time can teach us about the Equal: there are no examples of perfectly equal objects in our world. Therefore, to first identify two equal objects, we must have had implicit knowledge of the Equal at birth. I was playing outside by my elderly neighbor and she said, “Stop,” and I did, which made her tell me I was very obedient.
