The ideas of spirituality and religion differ from one another, but sustain the same purpose. Spirituality includes a sense of connection to one’s self, which drives the search for the meaning of life. On the other hand, religion revolves around a particular system of faith and worship. The questions that arise from religion consist of the contrasting views of morally right and wrong actions. Between the two, spirituality and religion, both reveal themselves as mental guides for one’s way of living. From my perspective, spirituality represents a higher degree of personal value. As time progresses, one’s character grows and develops from his surroundings. The impact of his surroundings leads to an active search for meaning and purpose, the experience of synchronicity, and the questioning of his place in life. Rather than following a systematic set of rules, often set by certain religions, spirituality allows for the freedom …show more content…
After I watched Little Buddha, my thoughts on spirituality have been positively influenced. The path to happiness and enlightenment begin from the understanding the root causes of suffering. Before Siddhartha reached enlightenment, a young girl named Sujata, offered him a bowl of rice. Although Siddhartha practiced the austerity of eating small amounts of food, he realized that he needed to accept the offer to reach the goal of enlightenment. The purpose of this action questions the validity of the attached state of mind. The mental strength of one’s mind disguises the negative flaws while exaggerating the good qualities of an object. Relating to synchronicity, one’s sensibility allows the flow of how the universe work rather than adjusting the flow to his favour. By allowing the combination of the two ideas, spirituality represents a personal journey for one’s self. Spirituality designates one’s own experience, while religion consists of someone else’s
Religion used to be the separation of the sacred from the profane. The sacred refers to that which is set apart from society, and mundane life. The profane, on the other hand, is everything else, all those mundane things like jobs, bills, and chores. Through religion, the practice of maintaining the distance between the two realms of the sacred and profane world is in tact. By attending church,
Religion has 7 core attributes that allow someone to call it a religion, these include Narrative, Doctrine, Emotional, Material, Ethical, Ritual and Social. These seven attributes help individuals identify what can be classified as a “religion”, however spirituality has no “easy way” to identifying it. Spirituality can be found within the individual looking for their “meaning” but not physically expressed.
The idea of spirituality is realistically a difficult word to define, everyone perceives spirituality in their own way, and uses it in different ways. When reading the Christian bible, John the Baptist discusses the idea of spirituality and defines it as, “Spirituality is all about becoming more like God, who is spirit and having our character conformed to his image.”(John 4:24) (Romans12: 1-2). When the Natives were forced to convert to Christianity, this is what they were told to believe, that spirituality means that you must conform you’re character to be more like God. This truly shows you how much the Europ...
Let us not confuse or conflate the spiritual with the physical: they are inseparable, but they are not interchangeable. Do not allow wishful thinking to lead to delusions. To grasp the idea of prosperity and self-worth
Religion cannot be lived in textbooks, it is about the personal consciousness of those that believe and “their own account of their religion and its relevance in contemporary life” (Fisher, 1996). It is performed, experienced by the individuals living within society and communities. For some it is a sense of hope, to connect with a supreme power, to end the cycle of birth and death, find inner peace and/or a way of life. Traditional understanding of religion through textbooks, television, and internet does provide one with understanding about the religion doctrine and what they believe in. The majority of people will know what religion is when seeing it, for example, a Buddhist Monk sitting cross-legged in meditation. However, it is important to study religion off campus in order to grasp an explanation and a clear understanding of how beliefs change personal lives, how individuals tackle certain situations due to belief for example, Buddhist Monk sitting cross-legged in meditation, but w...
Siddhartha Gautama is famously known as Gautama Buddha and was the founder of the idea of Buddhism. The Buddha was known to possess supernatural powers and abilities. He was born in the holy land of Nepal and his journey began in India when he decided to travel and teach himself about life. In the midst of his journey, he discovered Buddhism after he experienced a profound realization of the nature of life, death and existence. Buddhism became a religion based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama and since then Buddhism has been popular throughout many civilizations. Buddhism is now one of the most ancient religions in the world, where people follow Buddha, which stand for “awakened one,” and Buddhism which has gained popularity because of the teachings of the Buddha.
Religion is an organized collection of beliefs and cultural systems that entail the worship of a supernatural and metaphysical being. “Religion just like other belief systems, when held onto so much, can stop one from making significant progress in life”. Together with religion come traditions that provide the people with ways to tackle life’s complexities. A subscription to the school of thought of great scholars
A worldview is at the core of personality, culture and religion (Shelly & Miller, 2006). It is the underlying factor for different individual multiple behaviors exhibited by people. Therefore, if we want to understand the behavior of people, we must first understand their worldview. It is also important to comprehend that the importance of religion, worldview, and spiritual life is intricately linked to associations with places of worship and personal beliefs. Some may pray or find comfort in a personal relationship with God or a higher power and others may seek meaning through connections to nature. Similar to the sense of purpose, personal definition of spirituality may change throughout a lifetime because it often
From the moment we are born we have the tendency of craving the worldly desires that we are exposed to. Its part of human nature to want an ideal life where you are either wealthy, powerful, happy or all of the above without any suffering involved. Although that ideal sounds phenomenal, it is the thought of limitation that drives many people to seek for something more than just worldly pleasures. As some stay within the lines of an insatiable life, others come to the realization that living a life with nothing but worldly pleasures and goals are ultimately not everlasting. This is the point where people go on to pursue something bigger than themselves, something that gives them a purpose and infinite joy or as most would call it, a religion. One of the most fascinating major world religions that many have chosen to follow for centuries is Buddhism. A very complex, yet intriguing religion that seeks for a way of life that ultimately releases a person from suffering and leads them to inner peace and joy.
It amazes me how a religion can find its way from one end of the world to the other. It makes its way through many phases such as wars, and now the ability of people to travel more now than in years ago. We see something that we like and then try to bring it back into our lives to try and make it fit. Buddhism originated in India and then made its way to Asia. Many liked how Buddhism focused on self-reliance, insight, and awareness. It also seems to even fit some views of the modern science. Science comes from testing hypotheses, and forming conclusions from what can be proven with factual analysis. Buddhism does not follow this method when understanding the nature of truth. Science is about reproducibility. While one can try to reproduce the
If you have ever met a Buddhist you may have discussed their religion with them. Buddhists live stern lives that help them gain enlightenment, their main goal of life. Buddhism is a very interesting religion because of the fact that it is so unique and different from any other religion. It is alluring to Buddhists even though it is pretty simplistic and the culture within Buddhism is attention capturing and eye grabbing.
All of our problems and suffering originate from confused negatives states of mind and all happiness and good fortunes derive from peaceful and positive states of mind. In this course, we have learned about the Buddha, the Dharma, The Four Noble Truths, the cause and effect of suffering in one’s life. In this course I have learned to creatively and critically analyze literary materials learned through the Buddha’s insights from over 2,000 years ago. I was taught methods for gradually overcoming negative minds such as anger to develop minds with love compassion and wisdom, attributes that are obtained through experience.
“The meaning of spirituality lays the seeds for our destiny and the path we must follow.”
Ganga and Kutty stated (2013) spirituality refers to a path of life that enables people to seek reason of their existence and helps people explore challenges. Ganga and Kutty (2013) conducted a study on adults to see if spirituality had positive effects on their life, meaning did their life have purpose or value. Each participant partook in a study that asked questions about their life and purpose. The study consisted of a daily spiritual experience scale, it was a point scale that consist of 16 items to be rated on a 6-point scale. The results concluded that spirituality has positive effects on their life when seeking their purpose. Each participant felt that he/she had a purpose and that their life was valuable and meaningful (Ganga and Kutty, 2013). According to Ganga and Kutty (2013), spirituality is a way for people to discover the meaning of their life. Spirituality is a personal adventure to understand answers to the questions they seek to find about their spirituality and purpose in life. It says spirituality is a set of beliefs and practices that concludes with life changing paths that make a person’s life meaningful. Spirituality has been viewed as an important factor when realizing the purpose of life. Ganga and Kutty (2013) expressed spirituality enhances our emotions, thoughts, beliefs, relieves stress and it finds meaning and purpose of one’s life. I believe
Spirituality can have many different definitions, depending on who is asked. It can be something as simple as looking for a higher meaning to life, or something so complex that one can base their beliefs, religion and overall life around it. There are several different ways to express one's spirituality; rituals, songs, dances, stories, and writings are all common methods of expression.
