Social Problem. The problem and topic I am interested in is the emotional well-being of the elderly. The rapidly growing social work field I hear about is working with senior citizens. This is true, but to understand why, we will need to look at government statistics at the county, state, and national level. According to the census, San Francisco County’s population of persons 65 and older is at 14.4 percent, an increase from the 2010 estimate of 13.6 percent (census quick facts). In addition, California is at 12.9 percent, up from the 2010 estimate of 11.4 percent and nationally, the United States stands at 14.5 percent, up from the census’ 2010 estimate of 13.0 percent (census quick facts). Little Brothers of the Poor: Friends of the Elderly is an organization with a very rich history starting in the 20th century. In 1939, Armand Marquisete came up with the idea of Little Brothers of The poor, but could not act upon the idea due to the events leading up to the Second World War (Little Brothers of the Poor). Twenty years after the idea of the organization was formed, the first chapter in the United States was opened up in Chicago, IL in 1959 (Little Brothers). Around this time, Little Brothers of the Poor adopted a more protesting tone and denounced the poor living conditions for elderly people in hospice (Little Brothers). The organization was very vocal and very active in providing better living conditions for the elderly. Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly is unique because it does not receive any government funds, but does create community partnerships to help assist in fundraising. It relies primarily on individual donations and grants from generous foundations. At the very top of the funding “food chain” is the Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly American Fund: “Les petits frères des Pauvres France created the American Fund of Little Brothers of the Poor to support Little Brothers—Friends of the Elderly American network” (little brothers of the poor).
