Marcus is only seventeen when he gets accused of being a terrorist, and when
his best friend, Darryl almost dies in the hands of the Department of Homeland Security. In Little Brother by Cory Doctorow, Marcus is a seventeen year old boy who gets captured by the Department of Homeland Security. He is not only one that gets taken, his three other friends, Darryl, Jolu, and Van also got taken to get questioned. While they were with the DHS, they were kept in a cell like prisoners. They also didn’t know why they were being arrested, which goes against the Constitution. Amendment five protects you from being held for committing a crime unless you have been charged correctly by the police. After a week all four friends had cooperated with Carrie,

or “severe haircut lady” as Marcus called her, they were promised to be let out. Marcus, Van and Jolu were let out, but Darryl was not let out . Cory Doctorow reveals that there needs to be a right balance between security and privacy is demonstrated through metaphors, imagery and point of view. The theme in little brother is indicated in three ways, the first one is metaphors.
In Little Brother, Marcus has the right to speak his mind but he has to be prepared for the consequences. He might want to debate the constitution when people's lives are at stake but people will not listen or care. Before getting in trouble Marcus was courageous and spoke up about the amount of security there is in San Francisco. And how there is police at every corner of every street. Marcus says that by having numerous cameras in their school it is not helping stop trouble, it is just going against his rights. Other students go against and say that the number of security cameras make them feel safe. Marcus decided to speak up some more which got his teacher angry, leading to him getting in trouble. Marcus father says “We’re in a lifeboat now, and once you’re in the lifeboat, no one wants to hear about how mean the captain is being.” (p. 217). The metaphors supports the theme because Marcus is talking about how being monitored violates his privacy. The lasts chapter in Little Brother make the readers question Marcus loyalty to his friends. Marcus is planning to run away to escape the Department of Homeland Security. His acquaintance Masha convinces him to run away to Los Angeles to avoid being captured. While Marcus is running away he realizes that running away is a cowardly thing of him to do. After getting out of the truck that is supposed to take him to Los Angeles he meets some new people and they offer him a place to stay. Marcus soon realizes that the DHS is coming after him and he has to leave. Marcus gets caught once again. The highway patrol and Barbara rescue him and Darryl. Marcus is told he has to go to court. At the court the judge asks him why he chose to return and Marcus replies with, “I decided that I couldn't run. That I had to face justice- that my freedom wasn't worth anything if I was a wanted man, or if the city was still under the DHS. If my
friends were locked up. That freedom for me wasn’t as important as a free country.”[p. 354] Metaphors demonstrate Cory Doctorow’s theme of having equal balance. The second way, Cory Doctorow theme is demonstrated in Little Brother is through the use of imagery. Before Marcus and his friends got caught there was an attack in San Francisco. People were running around trying to find shelter and help their friend and families. There was smoke everywhere and the ground was shaking. Marcus describes the attack and everyone fleeing as “We popped free like champagne corks an eternity later, blinking in the gray smoky light. The air raid sirens were still blaring, and the sound of emergency vehicle sirens as they tore down Market Street was even louder. There was almost no one on the streets anymore just the people trying hopelessly to get under ground. A lot of them were crying. I spotted a bunch of empty benches usually staked out by skanky winos and pointed toward them...” (p.37) In the last chapters of Little Brother Cory Doctorow reveals the Climax, where Marcus is almost executed by the Department of Homeland Security. A man working for the DHS tells Marcus how he will be executed, “You get strapped down like this, and we pour water over your head, up your nose and down your mouth. You can't suppress the gag reflex. They call it simulated execution, and from what I can tell from this side of the room, that's a fair assessment. You won't be able to fight the feeling that you're dying.” (p.344). Cory Doctorow reveals another reason why the theme of Little Brother is finding equal balance. Furthermore, the theme of having equal balance is demonstrated through point-of-view. Marcus knew he wasn't going to die but he didn't know how to tell his body that. He had water in his lungs and his body was telling him he was going to die. “I couldn't help it. I gasped and aspirated the water I to my lungs, coughed and took more water in. I knew they wouldn't kill me, but I couldn't convince my body of that. In every fiber of my being, I knew I was going to die.” (p.345) Without having the right balance of security and privacy, Marcus did not have any privacy which lead him to being taken and tortured by the DHS. Marcus is mad at how his mind can't control his body. He can't convince his body he's not going to die. It's like his mind and his body are two separate people. He says, “The coughs were so deep they hurt, hurt my ribs and my hips as I twisted against them. I hated how my body was betraying me, how my mind couldn't control my body, burn there was nothing for it. “ (p.345) The theme is demonstrated through point of view. In Little Brother the theme of having equal balance between security and privacy is showed through Imagery, point of view and metaphors. The government has been trying to find an equal balance between security and privacy ever since Edward Snowden revealed that the National Security Agency collects phone data to track down terrorists. They also looks at people's private internet history to stop terrorists. But are they really stopping terrorist or just looking at innocent people's private data and going against the fourth amendment. In Little Brother the DHS wasn't only going against the fourth and fifth amendment but they took Marcus’ basic rights away by torturing him. If the government doesn't find the right balance between security and privacy, innocent lives will be targeted, tortured and accused.

In this dystopian novel entitled Little Brother, Cory Doctorow creates a chilling story in which the protagonist Marcus Yallow fights the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for his rights and freedoms. Marcus, Jose-Luis (Jolu), Vanessa (Van) and Darryl skip class one day to play their favorite game, Harajuku Fun Madness. As they are searching for clues, terrorists strike the city blowing up the Bay Bridge. Darryl is stabbed in the confusion and fear and the four friends get caught up in a huge crowd. In the novel, My Brother Sam is Dead, by James and Christopher Collier, they teach that there are many other ways to solve conflict besides war. War is violent, disgusting, and gruesome and so many people die in war. Families separate in war because of how many people want to be in the thrill of the war and also how many innocent family members die in the midst of war. Lastly, war is worthless and it was caused by a disagreement over something little and the outcome of war is not worth the many lives, time, and money and there are other ways to solve conflict besides to fight. War causes so many negative outcomes on this world that it needs to be avoided at all costs.
The story “Adam Robinson Acquires Grandparents and a Little Sister” by Edward P. Jones, published in his collection of short stories All Aunt Hagar’s Children, tells the story of Noah and Maggie Robinson as they take their grandson out of foster care. The story could be said to primarily be about the importance of family bonds, and about establishing and reestablishing them, but it also is very strongly focused on the difficulty in handling and rebuilding a family for grandparents who must take responsibility for their grown children’s children. This very severely stresses Noah and Maggie in ways that impact their expectations about how they would be leading their lives at this phase of their marriage, after having completed their own child rearing and finally reaching a stage where they could focus on their own plans. They now see themselves having to deal with often difficult issues that they had not previously faced while raising their own children. In general, though it seems that grandparents raising their grandchildren in place of the parents is just an un-dramatic variant of the basic function of a family where those parents may sometimes not be available, it can be very stressful on the grandparents, negatively affecting their everyday lives and their enjoyment (Mills, Gomez-Smith and De Leon 194) and upturning life plans (Fitzgerald pp). This is true in spite of the fact that this may ultimately be the far better alternative in this situation (Koh, Rolock and Cross). While having the grandparents raise the children is the better alternative to neglect, abuse or an unstable situation, it is potentially complicated, however, by the behavioral and emotional problems that can often affect children who have been through the ...

July 15, 1999, was an ordinary night for Kristopher Lohrmeyer as he left work at the Colorado City Creamer, a popular ice cream parlor. Kristopher had no idea that his life was about to end. When Michael Brown, 17, Derrick Miller and Andrew (Andy) Medina, 15, approached Kristopher and demanded his money and his car keys. Before the boys knew it shots had been fired and Kristopher was dead. About an hour after the fatal shooting of Kristopher Lohrmeyer, all three men were in custody and telling their version of the night’s events. Michael and Derrick who had run away after the shooting confessed to police and named Andy as the shooter. According to the three boy’s testimony, they had only recently met and needed away to get some quick cash, so they developed a carjacking scheme and headed to Andy’s house to pick up 2 stolen handguns. The three boys were uneducated and had spent most of their time on the streets in search of drugs. The judge ruled that they would be held without bail and there was probable cause to charge them all with first-degree murder (Thrown Away, 2005).
In Letters to a Young Brother, Hill Harper answers many letters than his readers have sent in. Many of the letters address issues of discrimination against blacks, the social expectations that young men face, and the desire for wealth that many black males face.
In 1966, American police procedure was changed by what is known today as the Miranda Rights. In 1963, Ernesto Miranda, a twenty three year old Hispanic American with an eighth grade education was arrested for kidnap and rape. (Paddock) He was identified by the victim of the crime in a police lineup. After he was identified, he was taken into police interrogation for two hours. When he was arrested, he was not informed of his Fifth Amendment right to not incriminate himself. He was also not informed of his Sixth Amendment right to have the assistance of an attorney. In the first part of his interrogation, Miranda denied having any involvement in the crime, but after two hours he confessed to the crime in writing. (Street Law)
The Odyssey and O Brother Where Art Thou are considered a representation of each other in some ways and prove more similar than it is commonly thought. Although the overall persona of each portrayal is quite different, it still illustrates the same message. A good lesson to be learned from this comparison is to contemplate your actions to prevent bleak situations from occurring. The characters in these tales had to understand the consequences by experiencing it themselves. Acknowledging the time period that these voyages took place in, they didn't have anybody to teach them proper ways to go about situations.
“They can murder whoever else they would like, for me the war will never be over.” (Collier and Collier 200) This quote was taken from chapter 14 of the book My Brother Sam is Dead by James and Christopher Collier, and was said by Mrs. Meeker. Mrs. Meeker is a mother and wife during the Revolutionary War, and lost both her son and her husband due to the war. Sam Meeker, who is the oldest Meeker, brother ran away to fight for the Patriots, though his parents claim to be Tories. Although both sides of the war are experienced and expressed in My Brother Sam is Dead, the authors make a strong conclusion throughout the book that war is gruesome.
The triumphant Olympians, in “The Boys in the Boat,” became the national heroes and felt proud of themselves in rest of their lives. Although there was a Great Depression and boys had economic difficulties and other living obstacles, eight rowers continued to win and championed in the 1936 Olympic games in Germany. According to Al Ulbrickson and his eight rowers, receiving praises, respects, and awards from what they earned from putting so much effort make them proud of themselves but they cannot be too arrogant and self-satisfied. Otherwise, they will feel too conceited and slack off from which will make them to lose.
