Transcendentalism was a new way of thinking which struck the world in the 1830s to the 1860s. It was a philosophical movement promoting self-reliance, free thought, and a connection to nature. Principles of Transcendentalism are still being used and applied today around the world, blending into everyday lives, and changing the growth of society. The development of Transcendentalism has made a profound impact in society today, and it will continue to influence the way people think and do. Transcendentalism changed literature in America as a whole. Transcendentalist writers such as Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson shifted literature to focus on the United States. The new literature highlighted imagination and contribution. Furthermore,
the new literature included themes of self-reliance, spirituality, and social injustice. It provided the verve for the Americans to speak up for individual beliefs. For example, the principles of nonconformity and free thought in transcendentalism spurred numerous social reform leaders in the fight for women’s rights, public schools, and humane prisons. Furthermore, Transcendentalism acted as a counter-movement to the ideas of the Enlightenment, as it placed emotion over mind (Enlightenment ideas promoted logic and observation). All in all, Transcendentalist principles included different priorities and different themes. The overall themes of Transcendentalism may seem very outdated, as logic, reason, and science dominate society today. As society is becoming more and more competitive, the principles of self-reliance and confidence may be extremely vital to one’s success in this age. In addition, living simple, a major theme in Transcendentalism is aiding people of discovering and understanding themselves and the universe. Moreover, the transcendentalist idea of building upon previous work can clearly be seen today, as companies in every department around the world are constantly planning for the future, and using information or data from the past. This doctrine guarantees the eventual formation of the “paradise” or “perfect society,” which is impossible to achieve, but provides something to work towards. Overall, Transcendentalist values have changed the way people work independently and the manner people conduct themselves in. Today, transcendentalist principles can be seen in the “green” or “nature” movements held today. In this age, the harm society can set on nature can easily be noticed, which is why a sundry amount of people have participated in environmental activities, such as recycling and using renewable energy. Awareness of resources is a critical point of Transcendentalism, as natural resources are considered extremely sacred. More sophisticated principles, such as the human divine spirit (human soul existing as a part of nature) are typically not seen, however, most virtues of conservation and care towards nature are embraced today. For example, numerous establishments made for conserving resources such as fish, topsoil, wildlife, and topsoil have been used to lessen the great impact people have put on the environment. These environmental undertakings have a strong connection with the importance of nature in Transcendentalism. Most people do not shadow the Transcendentalist principles of education, however, as most individuals would prefer a conventional approach to learning, using and simple paper-and-pencil and textbooks, rather than the hands-on teaching devices such as having kids repairing a yacht or having kids go outdoors to construct tools. Most have stepped away from this educational practice however. In short, the Transcendentalist principles have affected and changed the events people may or may not partake in, and it will continue to influence people’s decisions on education and the environment. Transcendentalism is justifiably a prominent ideology that affects both the individual and society. The system is unique in broadness, as it covers areas of politics, education, and the environment. The core principles of Transcendentalism, whether people realize it or ignore it, affect society today indirectly and directly.
Transcendentalism was a religious movement that started in the late 1820s and 1830s. The main focus of transcendentalism was the perfection and goodness of a human being, nature, and the universe; it was also thought independence brought about the best in people. It was presumed that society was the cause of the corruption of purity in a person. Anti- Transcendentalism was a more realistic view of the world. They thought man was capable of evil as well as easily being deceived and their proneness to sin and self-destruction. Anti- Transcendentalists believed that making decisions solely on logic will create a negative effect in actions and thoughts.
Transcendentalism to some is may just be a long, lengthy word coined two hundred years ago that is not used today, but to other people, people like Chris McCandless, it is a way of life. They use these qualities to shape their life and strive hard to follow them. Chris McCandless was so focused on embodying the qualities of transcendentalism that he failed to see how much danger he was putting himself in. He had little to no common sense as shown by Westerberg. “But there were gaps in his thinking. I remember once I went over to the house, walked into the kitchen, and noticed a god-awful stink. I mean it smelled nasty in there. I opened the microwave, and the bottom of it was filled with rancid grease. Alex had been using it to cook chicken, and it never occurred to him that the grease had to drain somewhere. It wasn’t that he was too lazy to clean it up- Alex always kept things real neat and orderly- it was just that he hadn’t noticed the grease” (Krakauer 45). McCandless embodied the values of transcendentalism by believing in living closer to nature, believing in the dignity of manual labor, and being self reliant.
In this essay, I will compare the philosophies of transcendentalism and anti-transcendentalism through the writings of Thoreau and Emerson vs. Melville. In Thoreau’s excerpt of “Walden”, he tested the transcendentalist philosophy through experience. Emerson’s transcendental writing style is displayed in “Nature”. In Melville’s excerpt of Moby Dick, he exhibits anti-transcendentalism in his work.
Although not looked upon as a widely popular topic in the 21st century, transcendentalism has played a role in everyone's life. Action of the tenets and values of transcendentalist people vary. Religious traditions from each generation amplify the movement along with the social and political activity.
Transcendentalism is based on the belief that institutions in the society corrupt an individual’s purity. Transcendentalists believe that people are at their best when they are truly independent and self-reliant. They also believe that from independence and self-reliance, a true community is formed. Even though Transcendentalism is not recognized, it still exists in the modern society. Though not clearly outspoken as in Emerson and Thoreau’s times, many people in today’s society still have transcendental beliefs. Transcendental ideals are found in songs, films, books and other works such as media and advertisements. One example is the song “Get up, Stand up,” by Bob Marley, it is found to be influenced and has inspiration of transcendental elements such as Solitude (individuality), self-reliance, non-conformism (anti-institution), anti-materialism, nature and spirituality.
Transcendentalism was born between the 18th and the early 20th century. It's a philosophy of individualism and self-reliance. Transcendentalists strongly believed in the power of the individual. Their beliefs are intently linked with those of the romantics but varied by an endeavor to embrace or to not abjure the factual science. Additionally, they believed that society and its institution primarily manipulated the integrity of the individual.
The 1830s was a time of serious religious conflict. Many people, especially authors, had different opinions on how to find true spirituality. In the end, authors in America created Transcendentalism. Transcendentalism is a philosophical and literary movement that searches for individual truth through spiritual reflection, complete solitude, and a deep connection with nature. Because this was established by authors, many of them wrote different pieces reflecting and using the beliefs of Transcendentalism. Ralph Waldo Emerson was considered to be the father of Transcendentalism. He wrote many influential pieces that follow and emphasize major Transcendental beliefs. The major beliefs include the over-soul, nature, and senses. In addition to those, there are minor beliefs and overall ways of living. These beliefs were included in Transcendental pieces as a general way to share the belief and to create a movement. Due to the use of nature, senses, and the over-soul as its three core Transcendental beliefs, Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “Nature” successfully explain the fundamentals of Transcendentalism.
Transcendentalism is a social, religious, and literary movement: a philosophy. Combining elements from the romantic period with eastern philosophical beliefs, it sought to fight against rationalism and conformism by inspiring individuals to look into their inner selves and embrace their own beliefs. One of the spearheads leading this movement was Ralph Waldo Emerson: an American writer and philosopher who sought to teach others what he himself had found. Transcendalists, such as Emerson, viewed society as a catalyst for downfall and instead believed that humans were inherently good and pure; embracing our inner feelings and emotions and ignoring expectations and conformity are essential to achieve happiness and fulfillment. Such ideas can
The Transcendentalism movement grew out of Unitarianism, which is a religious movement in which it is strongly stood behind the bringings of stability, rational though, and marks of Enlightened Christianity. Unitarianism would try to increase their relevancy by start to instill their values, and eventually
Modern day transcendentalists are not easily found anymore in society. It is hard to pinpoint exactly what a transcendentalist is. By being your own self, following your own standards and being yourself, you become transcendental. By looking at the Robertsons’ way of life, they would make a tremendous example of modern day transcendentalists. Their religion, love of nature, and individualism create a transcendental lifestyle.
Transcendentalism is the American literary, philosophical, and political movement of the early nineteenth century. This movement had a large focus on the works of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Emerson was considered
Many people have theories and philosophies about life in general. There have been hundreds of thousands of books published by many different people on the ideas of people in the past and the present. Transcendentalism falls in amongst all of these ideas. There have been articles, essays, poems, and even books written about this subject. Transcendentalism has effected many people since the philosophy was first introduced. The idea was complex and hard to grasp for many commoners and therefore it was understood by few people, and some would think that the idea was not understood at all and that was part of the idea. Henry David Thoreau once stated about himself, “I should have told them at once that I was a transcendentalist. That would have been the shortest way of telling them that they would not understand my explanations” (Reuben 1).
Transcendentalism is where people feel empowered and their surroundings surpass their five senses. Where intuition and imagination overpower logic and reason. There are five tenets that go along with transcendentalism: non conformity, self-reliance, free thought, confidence, and importance of nature. Non conformity is failure or refusal to conform to a prevailing rule or practice. Self-reliance is reliance on one's own powers and resources rather than those of others. Free thought is anything you think and express unaffected by other people's views. Confidence is the state of feeling certain about the truth of something. The importance of nature is where people need nature to relieve their feelings and connect to their home. Qualities of transcendentalism
Transcendentalism is a philosophy that has been passed down through the ages. Just like the world and the people that inhabit it, transcendentalism has changed over time. Since technology has advanced over time, people have thought differently about things. Even though many people have changed their thinking, many others haven’t. There are some people who have slight transcendentalist features. Others have strong transcendentalist features and like to spread the word as often as possible.
The movement of transcendentalism was a powerful movement that began to emerge in American in the nineteenth century. These powerful movements made readers question, challenge, and examine what they were accustomed too. Transcendentalism was the belief that what the person can see, touch, feel, taste, or comprehend goes beyond those senses. People were to knowledge their thoughts through instinct and imagination not through logic or the senses; they were to trust themselves to be their own authority on what is right.
