Literature Review An article (Yoo, Gee, & Takeuchi, 2009) discusses how the prejudice and discrimination based on the language are associated with the chronic health condition based on the stress and the length of stay in the U.S. The authors measure the data of the immigrations about how the immigrants had some discrimination which led to some problems in their bodies. The authors indicate that the mental conditions are easily influenced by the language discrimination; however, the physical condition of the immigrants is influenced by the length of stay in the U.S. It is because, according to Yoo et al., longer duration in the U.S has more association with chronic health conditions than shorter duration in the U.S. (Yoo et al., 2009, pp. …show more content…
The authors indicate that the race is one of the targets of discrimination so English as a second language (ESL) people are sometimes discriminated, such as the reject from job opportunity. Moreover, the authors write that international students are also given some prejudices and discriminations that Asian immigrants experienced because, according to them, approximately 70% of the international students experienced and knew someone who experienced discrimination. By their experiment, they concluded that the association between the perceived language discrimination and variables, like self-esteem and English proficiency, are independent of social desirability (Wei et al., 2012, p. …show more content…
According to Wated and Sanchez, the Mexican accent is sometimes treated as being uncultured, which means that even the accent of the English language becomes one of the targets of the stereotype, prejudice, and discrimination. It is because the accent is different for each country and group similar to the difference of language. Moreover, discrimination based on an accent creates other problems in the workplace because stress is felt for both foreign speakers and other workers. Therefore, the difference of an accent is negatively associated with the employees’ outcomes and positively associated with the source of stress. They indicate that the manager must make strategies to reduce discrimination and problems because of low job satisfaction and increased work tension. These situations encourage employees quit the job, and a low quality of the employee outcomes and work environment. Moreover, these situations become the cause of mental disorders, which lead to quiting the company and to committing suicide (Wated & Sanchez, 2006, pp. 329-341). Therefore, I think not only language skills, but also the accent becomes the cause of perceived language
“Standard English was imposed on children of immigrant parents, then the children were separated from native English speakers, then the children were labeled “inferior” and “ignorant” (Hughes 70) because they could not speak Standard English. In addition to feeling inferior about their second language skills, these students also felt inadequate in regard to speaking their own mother tongues” (qtd in Kanae)
Most people who grow up with a foreign language spoken in there house grow up with an advantage in society. This advantage can only occur once the individual learning that foreign language also learns the dominant language spoken in that country. Once both of these languages are learned and mastered, the individual has now placed them se...
Immigration can be defined as passing foreigners to a country and making it their permanent residence. Reasons ranging from politics, economy, natural disasters, wish to change ones surroundings and poverty are in the list of the major causes of immigration in both history and today. In untied states, immigration comes with complexities in its demographic nature. A lot of cultural and population growth changes have been witnessed as a result of immigration. In the following paper, I will focus on how immigration helps United States as compared to the mostly held view that it hurts America.

The essay “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan delivers a remarkable point about linguistic discrimination without specifically showing anger. It’s a story about Tan and her mother, and the language they share together, which is an imperfect variation of English. Tan establishes that language is her tool for being a writer. She loves the power of language, and she uses all the languages she’s familiar with in her writing. When Tan says languages, she’s referring to the two variations of English she frequently uses; perfect English, and the “simple” English she uses when speaking to her Chinese mother. Tan presents real life stories about her mom struggling
Johnson and Newport used 46 native Chinese or Korean second language learners of English who were students and faculty members at an American university. The subjects were presented together because of their native languages dissimilarity to English and lack of difference in the results of two groups. The subjects' ages differentiate between 3 and 39, when they first arrived in the US and they had lived in the target language culture for between the age of 3 and 26. According to their age of arrival in the US, t...
Cultural differences – Minority/Immigrant patients have altered cultural perceptions about physical symptoms or family issues which they may be struggling with, resulting in them not seeking the care of a physician or social services. Cultural perceptions and description of physical symptoms to the physician can cause the health care provider difficulty in knowing what the patient is struggling with as well as having trouble finding a diagnosis (Scheppersa, et al, 2006). This is a barrier which occurs frequently in health care as well as with social services causing immigrant patients stress with communicating with their health care provider.
Life is tough when one doesn’t speak the native language or is new to a country. “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan is a personal essay written in the first person point of view that tells the audience a story of a non-English speaker. Tan shares her story of how difficult it is for her mother to communicate with others. The presumption that people treat one another differently and with disrespect when one does not speak English is categorical truth. Tan’s purpose is to share her story and give the audiences the message of how tough life can be for non-English speakers because they have to work hard to achieve success; therefore, non-English speaker deserves the same respect as other people. Tan’s experiences along with my experiences are similar because
The American society is a melting pot of different cultures, race, and languages. Living in America does not mean that someone is a natural born American or a perfect English speaker. Many people who migrated to America face discrimination due to their inability to speak proper English. In her essay, “Mother Tongue,” author Amy Tan examines the various struggles she faces with her identity through language and the perspective American society has on Asian-American immigrants.
In your company, a position that pays a higher salary and has more regular work hours opens up so you decide to apply for the job. Your supervisor tells you that you cannot be considered for the position because although you are fully fluent in English, you have a Vietnamese accent. Instead, another employee who speaks with a British accent is interviewed for the position. In Myriam Marquez’s article “Why and When We Speak Spanish in Public” and Amy Tan’s article “Mother Tongue” we get a taste of what it feels like to be linguistically impaired and discriminated against. Through exploring Tan’s and Marquez’s articles, one can see the importance of learning a certain amount of English so one can get far in life and not be taken advantage of,
Some disputers state that immigration threatens American culture and leads to multiculturalism. The Immigration Act of 1965 was not meant to open up America’s borders because of the “need” for multiculturalism, rather because of the belief in equal rights for all individuals. Immigrants are allowed into America solely based on their individual worth, not their historical background or beliefs. However, any person migrating from one country to another carries with them their cultural background and beliefs, and this is why America is a land of many cultures. In the 1970s and 1980s, America began to recognize the ethnic diversity in the country, each culture demanding to be acknowledged. America had previously stated that they were non-discriminating towards others, and therefore were forced to recognize and give rights to other cultures. Because of this, America is now “one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We’re a major source of Latin music, journalism, and culture.” (President George Busch) Additionally, immigration spreads disease and threatens public health. The US Department of Health and Human Services found that along the borders, there are higher rates of disease that are not normally found in America. Today, before entering America, legal immigrants are checked for mental or physical conditions, any dangerous contagious disease, and any disease or disability that may limit their ability to earn a living. However, these inspections often take less than 5 seconds, making it impossible to detect any medical problems or diseases. Once an immigrant enters the country with a disease, it can spread instantaneously through mosquitos or other animals. Citizen taxes also pay for the rehabilitation of those in need. America’s budget crisis does not only arise from spending money on foreign patients, but also with fraud by foreigners
Issue: Did the trial court error when it gave the jury access only to calculations of damages that included ethnicity as a component? Should these types of formulas exist when determining future loss of wages for an injured child?
Making stereotypical and prejudice statements and accusation about certain groups of people looking the same and that they are better at different things than other just based on the color of their skin. People’s human rights were taken away just because they looked a different way too. Most think of the racial problems in the United States with slavery, segregation, Jim Crow, the Civil Right’s Movement, and more, however, racism and the violation of human rights based on race is a global problem. In 1955, during the high tension of the Cold War and fight against Communism, the first Afro-Asian Conference was held to look and take into account the problems and concerns “to countries of Asia and Africa and discuss ways and means by which their
Individuals with English conversational ability has more positive disposition on expanding the foreign inhabitants. On the other hand, individuals with only English reading ability are less favorable towards the immigration influx. Kadoya (2011) reports that the mandatory schooling structure provides English language teaching to students, but the education modules is ordinarily focused around English reading to get ready for university entrance examination with only an hour class of English per week. As a result, Japanese people are minimally capable in reading English and substantially less skillful at English conversation. This somewhat describes why people with English reading ability only are unfavorable to growing immigration as they have limited exposure to foreign languages (English) and feel uncomfortable communing in that respective language. Therefore, the unfavorable outlook towards increasing immigration relates with the currently low English proficiency level of Japanese
In today time, everyone still has problem with everyone. They’re not a perfect person on this earth but people try and get that ideal person. People speak different language and are learning many more but people who don’t speak a different language often has a problem with the one that do. In the three work that are discuss are Bully, Immigrants, and Theme for English B, they all talk about the many different race. People want to be accepted in to this ideal situation and not be judge by coming from a different background. Many are judge on who they are and who they want to be. People hold them self-back because of where they came from because they don’t think they got a chance.
