Drown was a sad story. Reading it you could see what goes on not only with drown, but in other family’s to. Target audiences are the mother, Dad, and the son Yunior. The Mother character was successful because she stuck it through being a single parent. Some parts of the story the author could have definitely elaborate more on the dad toward the end and the daughter Madai. The writer to me did not have a distinctive voice so I would not recognize it if I were reading something similar. The use of vocabulary was very informal. The way the writer used Spanglish throughout the story to capture tones of the characters was good. If I was not part of the target audience, I would still be interested because sometime the target audience fades away
and other characters make up for it.
While I liked Into The Killing Seas, it didn't quite get the adrenaline pumping or my mind racing with imaginative thoughts which is what I like in a book. What I mean by this is that to me, it didn't seem like it was enough to get my thoughts flowing about how people in WWII felt. It felt like I didn't gain a great connection with the people in the book. Unrealistically, the Battleship Shark description was good but with little detail, sure sharks can grow 10-12ft long and the author makes it sound like we're talking about JAWS, but he gave very little details about the shark if it had battle scars or his fin was partially gone. Like I said before, very little detail. On top of that, the suspense is horrific with the shark attacks. It sounds like the sharks are not only trying to kill the sailors because it's an instinct, but it also sounds like the sharks are having an emotional takedown of the sailors All in all, I liked Into The Killing Seas, but it didn't seem
story, the plot was good. The liked the purpose of the author and the way
I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys historical fiction books where the characters learn life-altering lessons. I also feel that people of all ages would enjoy this book because it’s messages and theme was very positive. While I did enjoy this book, I think I will not be reading another historical fiction novel for my upcoming book response.
I enjoyed how the book was written. I liked how the narrator makes me wonder how girls can be attracted to men that they do not even know. In my opinion, some point of this novel is very interesting but some points are too disturbing by the sexual teenage. The narrator provide the consideration point to the teenagers that the relationship between the boys and the girls do not important as much as the relationship between friends. In the Jailbait, Andi’s friends always ask her about her life and even consider her life more than her boyfriend. This makes me think about some people do not care about their friends, but when they get in trouble, friends are always there. Friends always talk to you, hug you, and make you do not feel lonely, whereas, the relationship of boys and girls can break up whenever two people are not understand or just feel bored with each
Sadness, anger, humor, intrigue, and yearning swept over me as I devoured Junot Diaz’s dark and descriptive short story collection/novel Drown. As a mother of adolescent boys and as a teacher, my heart ached for Yunior both as a child and a young adult. As a child, Yunior was innocent, lonely, and lacked support. These same traits followed him through adolescence and into adulthood. Along with these feeling about Yunior, I guiltily felt little compassion for Yunior’s father, Ramon de las Casas. Keenly, Ramon constructed plans to get to the United States yet fell short in living up to his potential and providing for his family. While still in the Dominican Republic, Yunior reminisced, “We were poor. The only way we could have been poorer
Hemingway presents takes the several literary styles to present this short story. Hemingway’s use of Foreshadowing, Pathos, Imagery and Personification allows the reader to enter the true context of the frustration and struggle that the couples face. Although written in the 1920’s it the presents a modern day conflict of communication that millions of couples face. At first glance the beautiful landscape of the Barcelonian hillside in which Jig refers to frequently throughout the text appears to have taken the form of White Elephants. The Americans’ response to Jigs’ observation was less than enthusiastic as he provides a brief comment and continues on with his cerveza. This was but the first of the many verbal jousts to come between Jig and the American. The metaphorical inferences in those verbal confrontations slowly uncover the couple’s dilemma and why they may be on the waiting for the train to Madrid.
There is a never ending list of what makes some people amazing story tellers. Some writers have vast imaginations, other writers use the lives of others in their stories and other writers use their lived experiences in order to write moving works of art. Most books, works of poetry and short stories that revolve around lived experiences share a common theme of love, hate or both. As these are emotions that all humans share, However, there are some stories that have far more unique. Stories like “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien and “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway. Both O’Brien and Hemingway come from two completely separate walks of life but were both able to write stories using the same theme of emotional and physical
It was Ernest Hemingway’s belief that “for a true writer each book should be a new beginning where he tries again for something that is beyond attainment” (Nobel Prize Speech). This means that each time someone puts pen to paper, he should strive for such realness that it seems unreal. Rhetoric, or use of language, is the most critical aspect of writing. This is because a skilled use of rhetoric not only allows the writer to convey his ideas to an audience, but also manipulate the way the audience perceives them. Hemingway is extremely well-known for his use of rhetoric, which includes his figurative language, syntax, and other types of literary devices. Hemingway uses syntax, figurative language, and the placement of his stories and chapters

A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway, is a story about love and war. Frederic Henry, a young American, works as an ambulance driver for the Italian army in World War I. He falls tragically in love with a beautiful English nurse, Miss Catherine Barkley. This tragedy is reflected by water. Throughout the novel Ernest Hemingway uses water as metaphors. Rivers are used as symbols of rebirth and escape and rain as tragedy and disaster, which show how water plays an important role in the story.
“Any man’s life, told truly, is a novel.” Ernest Hemingway a brilliant writer, lover, and tragic man has forever influenced the literature world. He continues to intrigue and mesmerize his audience with his great novels and short stories. Hemingway’s free spirit and love for nature strongly influenced his works. Also regarded as one of the heads of The Lost Generation, Hemingway was a true ex patriot. Unfortunately Hemingway’s inner demons took over. Now we are left with beautifully rich works for readers and ages to come.
The first part of the book focuses on the people and their relationships around the docks and their hometown. It gave an in-depth glimpse into the life and psychological behaviors of fishermen. Given the total length of the book my first reaction to this focus on people was that it was too much. My second reaction was "just right." Less stress would have de-personalized the characters. Towards the end the characters in the book have all learned something about themselves because of this storm. Being that some of the characters are not here anymore makes the book all the more poignant.
Ernest Hemingway’s notorious short story The Killers follows two contracted killers who enter an establishment looking for a Swedish aging boxer and in their endeavor patronize the workers of the establishment as well as the only patron. After hearing of their plans to kill the boxer, the patron, Nick Adams, is sent out to warn the boxer once the killers leave the establishment, but alas Ole Andreson would rather accept his fate and stay to face the killers. Adams then runs away from the town because he cannot stand the thought of what is about to occur. The use of heavily external focalization allows readers to sympathize with the characters as well as rationalize Adams’ reasonings for leaving the town without having the characters thoughts
What is a short story? For Earnest Hemingway, it was a means of expression that gave him an outlet to show the world how impactful his life was on his works. One of his earliest writing being a journal from his teenage years, Hemingway has proven time and time again how skilled of a writer he was, and it was no surprise. With a life like his, he was provided very good material to work with. In various works written by Earnest Hemingway, there are common themes of intimate harm as well as human suffering not only reflected in his short stories, but also in the authors personal life.
Ernest Hemingway, an American writer, is one of the pioneers of the modernist movement in literature. He was born in Chicago in 1899 and he is characterized for being known as a virile man, but his stories and characters reflect personality of a sensible human, even though at first sight his characters doesn’t seem so. His style of writing requires reading his stories more than once just to get through the layers and find the true meaning of his words. His two short stories, “Cat in the Rain” and “Mr. and Mrs. Elliot”, portray the intimacy of marriage, and the relationship between a man and a woman in that time. Both stories have a married couple that face the gender and sexual difficulties, and what is expected by society for them to behave
