Edgar Allan Poe is an American author, writer, poet, and literary critic. Regardless of the unfortunate events that took place in his life, he wrote some of the best poetry that is widely known today. He was born in Boston, Massachussetts on January 19, 1809. Poe was the second of the three children in his family. After three years of age, his birth parents died. John Allan and Francis Valentine Allan adopted Poe into their family as their own. Growing up in Richmond, Virginia, Poe was raised in a good surrounding and went to good schools. From early on, his parents had hoped he would follow their direction as wealthy tobacco merchants. He has a typical writing style that involves a mysterious theme of recurring events. Events which are either about death, lost love, or both. Poe uses a subtle style and tone about his writing. He creates subconscious characters as well as serious backgrounds to emphasize his point of view in his tales. He does this in a way that shifts the readers attention to a demented area of mystery. He constructs these brilliant forms of mystery and terror to match his symbolic play in language with his incredible choice of words. In order to explain the ability of this wonderful author, I want to provide the reader with an assortment of short story examples by Edgar Allen Poe. "The Black Cat" is a horror topic about a cat. This story is a popular one and it is about a drunk man who kills his cat, that comes back to haunt him. All the while, in this unusual tale, we see the story through the narrator's eyes. Another interesting read is "The Angel of the Odd". This is a dark comedy that shows what happens to a man who has been drinking way too much. He meets a strange character througout the short story. "The Island of the Fay" is another very short piece by the author that is more of a poetic discussion. In this story, "Faye" means fairy or elf. Poe writes about the nature of God and the universe, combined with a beautiful and poetic visualization of life and death. The writing of this man did not only come from the enjoyment of composing the stories that he did. But from a darker place, that only he was possible to portray on paper. From the passing of his beloved mother while at college, the financial troubles that his father put him through at a young adult age, and the health of his ill wife, all contributed to the deep and dark mysteries in his style of
