For this final essay I selected three literary masterpieces namely the story titled “The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara, and two Emily Dickinson’s Poems: I heard a fly buzz and The heart asks for pleasure first. The following essay will explore these works in a greater detail focusing on the elements of literature, such as the theme, the character, settings and conflicts. It will find ways to connect, relate or compare one literary work to two others as well as it will analyze the specific element in the selections with some depth. The paper will support points with appropriate examples from the selections and explain how the examples support those points.
The main work in the consideration is a literary magnum opus of Toni Cade Bambara, named “The Lesson”. Just like many stories, this one certainly is designed to each readers some lessons, related to life, lifestyle, relationships, love, family, friendship and growing up. The readers learn from the behaviors of the main characters, related themselves to those and find it necessary to imitate the behaviors in similar situations. Toni Cade Bambara's short story, The Lesson, was no exception to the rule, and as the name may suggest, the author presented a certain lesson to be learnt, namely the lesson that people should not take life and things in life for granted and should rather remain grateful for every day, while personally striving to become the best they can become in life.

She fought against the black unprivileged status and her characters serves as a role model to the black children. The works of Emily Dickinson, namely poems I heard a fly buzz and The heart asks for pleasure first has slightly different positions reflecting the author’s personal set of beliefs, yet at the same time they provide different points of view on the meaning of life, on the human desire to maximize pleasure and minimize pain and on whether or not one should do everything to achieve whenever one can or wait for the afterlife as the ultimate solution.
Allison Joseph asks many questions in this poem bring a black American and how someone of the black community is expected to speak. Some of these questions include, “Was [she] supposed to sound lazy, / dropping syllables here and there/ not finishing words but/ slurring their final letters/ so each sentence joined/ the next, sliding past the listener?”(34-39), and “Were certain words off limits, / too erudite for someone whose skin/ came with a natural tan?” (40-42).
Toni Cade Bambara’s ‘The Lesson’ starts with the Sylvia’s description about one African-American’s appearance, who is called Miss Moore. The story is focused on the the event of field trip that Miss Moore conducted for her students one day. She takes her students to pricy toy store which is called F.A.O. Schwartz, to let them see the reality of gap between poor and rich. Having Our Say is one of them. My advice is to read this book while you are still in 090 or 094, just to get the advantage. These are some things that you will discover in this extraordinary biography. This book is tough to take as humorous, because it’s heart-wrenching to look at racism in America, but Having Our Say, manages to pull off the feat. Having Our Say really makes you think and tries to somehow reflect on the past as if you were actually there. As a white male, I am amazed at how these two African American sisters were able to live through over one hundred years of racism and discrimination, and then be able to write about their experience in a humorous, yet very interesting way. Having Our Say chronicles the lives of Sadie and Bessie Delany, two elderly colored sisters (they prefer the term colored to African-American, black, and negro), who are finally having their say. Now that everyone who ever kept them down is long dead, Sadie and Bessie tell the stories of their intriguing lives, from their Southern Methodist school upbringing to their involvement in the civil rights movement in New York City. Sadie is the older, 103 years old, and sweeter of the sisters. The first colored high school teacher in the New York Public School System, Sadie considers herself to be the Booker T. Washington of the sisters, always shying away from conflict and looking at both sides of the issue. Bessie is the younger sister, 101 years old, and is much more aggressive. A self-made dentist who was the only colored female at Columbia University when she attended dentistry school there, Bessie is the W.E.B. Dubois of the sisters, never backing down from any type of confrontation. As the sisters tell the stories of their ancestors and then of themselves, and how they have endured over 150 years of racism in America, they tend to focus mainly on the struggles that they encountered as colored women. Bessie brings laughter to the book with her honest, frank, and sometimes, confrontational take on life.
Anne Moody’s memoir, Coming of Age in Mississippi, is an influential insight into the existence of a young girl growing up in the South during the Civil-Rights Movement. Moody’s book records her coming of age as a woman, and possibly more significantly, it chronicles her coming of age as a politically active Negro woman. She is faced with countless problems dealing with the racism and threat of the South as a poor African American female. Her childhood and early years in school set up groundwork for her racial consciousness. Moody assembled that foundation as she went to college and scatter the seeds of political activism. During her later years in college, Moody became active in numerous organizations devoted to creating changes to the civil rights of her people. These actions ultimately led to her disillusionment with the success of the movement, despite her constant action. These factors have contributed in shaping her attitude towards race and her skepticism about fundamental change in society.
Anne Moody’s Coming of Age in Mississippi is a narrated autobiography depicting what it was like to grow up in the South as a poor African American female. Her autobiography takes us through her life journey beginning with her at the age of four all the way through to her adult years and her involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. The book is divided into four periods: Childhood, High School, College and The Movement. Each of these periods represents the process by which she “came of age” with each stage and its experiences having an effect on her enlightenment. She illustrates how important the Civil Rights Movement was by detailing the economic, social, and racial injustices against African Americans she experienced.
Throughout her experience, Melba’s views and attitudes changed quite a bit. When she first volunteered to be one of the first black students who would attend Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, Melba was full of excitement. She filled her thoughts with the better education she would be receiving as well as the huge step she would be taking in making sure all people of color would eventually receive a better education. She wondered about the white friends she would soon be making. Above all, she felt proud, knowing that she deserved this chance at a better life.
In Anne Moody’s autobiography, Coming of Age in Mississippi, she describes what it was like to grow up during the Jim Crow era of the Deep South in poverty in a household of five and constantly growing. As Moody developed into a woman she dealt with many hardships. She overcame the adversities of being a girl of color during this time. Moody’s education helped her understand the full effects of everything happening around her.
Growing up as the young child of sharecroppers in Mississippi, Essie Mae Moody experienced and observed the social and economic deprivation of Southern Blacks. As a young girl Essie Mae and her family struggled to survive, often by the table scraps of the white families her mother worked for. Knowing little other than the squalor of their living conditions, she realizes this disparity while living in a two-room house off the Johnson’s property, whom her mother worked for, watching the white children play, “Here they were playing in a house that was nicer than any house I could have dreamed of”(p. 33). To the modern white women who grew up in comfort and did not have to work until she graduated from high school, the life of Anne Moody reads as shocking, and almost too bad to be true. Indeed, white women of the modern age have grown accustomed to a certain standard of living that lies lightyears away from the experience of growing up black in the rural south. Anne Moody mystifies the reader in her gripping and beautifully written memoir, Coming of Age in Mississippi, while paralleling her own life to the evolution of the Civil Rights movement. This is done throughout major turning points in the author’s life, and a detailed explanation of what had to be endured in the name of equality.

Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830, in Amherst, Massachusetts, where she spent most of her life with her younger sister, older brother, semi-invalid mother, and domineering father in the house that her prominent family owned. As a child, she was curious and was considered a bright student and a voracious reader.
