For many cultures, art will always be eternal as it speaks millions of what has happened and the effects of it. “Ozymandias”, a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelly, is the tale of a statue of the great leader “Ozymandias” narrated by a traveler. By applying literary devices such as metaphors, irony, form, and structure, Shelly is able to convey the fact that art is everlasting while the impacts of huge leader figures are not.
None of Ozymandias marks on his empire are left, but the remnants of the statue remain. The traveler reveals that “Nothing remains besides the decay” (line 12) This parallels to the matter of how all a leader may leave behind will be the ruins of what he attempted to create whether it is a positive or negative impact. This portrays him as one who is not afraid of a downfall because he does not believe he will experience one. Despite being a proud successful man, his sculptor had illustrated his face with a “…wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command” (line 5) The irony of such a great leader being seen from the point of view as the artist. The artist portrays him as so because he can see the true form of Ozymandias as he is the “hand that fed”. Presumably Ozymandias was a man who was very confident and non-reliant on others but still took much pride in himself and believe people would worship him for centuries which is why he commissioned a sculpture of himself. The artist however can be seen as someone who had an unspoken insight on the entire ordeal. He was someone who saw past it all and knew that whoever he was painting was bound to either make it or break it. When comparing and contrasting “Ozymandias”, written by Percy Bysshe Shelley and “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay, there is a strong contrast between the two. Ozymandias is a poem about a long-forgotten king who once had mighty power over his people, where as “Viva La Vida” is about a king who was overthrown. However, the similarities between the song and poem are astonishing. “Ozymandias” is similar to “Viva La Vida”because both texts mention a rockpile built upon sand for a king; because both texts show that the citizens are enemies of the king; and because they are both about a king who has lost his power.
While he does succeed, his plans go awry, and his life ends in ruin, due only to his hubris. Similarly, Ozymandias succeeds at what he sets out to do, but cannot foresee that his power will not be eternal due to his hubris. In both works, the main character tries and fails at defying nature, something which should never be attempted. For my final project I chose to compare two works of art from ancient Mesopotamia. A visual work of art and a literary one. The visual work of art I chose was the Statuettes of Worshipers which were created around 2900 to 2350 BCE at the Square Temple at Eshnunna, a city in ancient Mesopotamia. The literary artwork I have chosen is the Epic of Gilgamesh written roughly around 2800 BCE by author or authors unknown. It was set in Uruk, another city in ancient Mesopotamia. Both of these works of art share a common theme; the theme of immortality. It is my hopes that within this paper I can accurately show how each of these works of art express this theme, and how it relates to modern society.

This poem describes a story told you by a passing traveler of a ruined statue of a king, Ozymandias, seemingly in a desolate desert. On the statue in is inscribed, “‘My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!’/Nothing beside remain” (“Ozymandias” 10-12). “Ozymandias” is a great poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley. In this sonnet of fourteen lines, the poet explores many different issues and good interpretations. Nature can create or destroy everything with the same strength. As we saw that Ozymandias work was first created with such a great power and then later nature destroyed it too. His poem as per my opinion creates a theme of nature’s power using natural words and how it can bring down Ozymandias work and it shows the imagery of the power of King.
The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Odyssey both are held in high respect by literature analysts and historians alike for the characterization of the hero and his companion, the imagery brought to mind when one of them is read, and the impressive length in relation to the time period it was written in. The similarities that these two epics share do not end with only those three; in fact, the comparability of these works extend to even the information on the author and the archetypes used. However, The Odyssey and The Epic of Gilgamesh contrast from one another in their writing styles, character details, and main ideas. Both epics weave together a story of a lost man who must find his way, but the path of their stories contrast from one another.
