Do you believe in witches? In The Crucible, many people believed in the unthinkable. However, not everyone believed in witchcraft especially John Proctor, Giles Corey, and John Hale. In The Crucible ,Proctor, Giles, and Hale prove that standing up for their beliefs and being true is better than lying. Proctor wanted to stand up for his wife because he knew and believed his wife was not involved in any witchcraft. In the story, Danforth says to Proctor that “I understand well, a husband tenderness may drive him to extravagance in defense of a wife” (0000). Therefore, Proctor is a good husband and believes if he goes to court and speaks on the behalf of his wife, she will be proven innocent. First, Hale says “ I have signed seventy-two death warrants, I am minister of the Lord and to dare not take a life without there be a proof so immaculate no slightest qualm of conscience may doubt it.” Hale believes not to take a life if there is proof that proves that person’s innocence unlike Danforth who Hales believes wants people to die for this witchcraft. Secondly, Hale says “ I believe him and this girl has always strike me false, she has. Hale believes that Abigail is a liar and not to trust her: but to trust John Proctor. Lastly, he says “If you think God wills you to raise rebellion Mr. Danforth you are mistaken.” When he said that he believes that Danforth has a lust for power and tries to be just but loses will truth of what God wants. In The Crucible characters stand up for their beliefs and show great courage even though they don’t succeed. In today’s world people who stand up for their beliefs are heroes.
