One hundred years of solitude had numerous themes throughout the book. Gabriel Garcia Marquez talks about on how the town of Macondo from the founding to its demise. The major theme that Gabriel has brought throughout the book were different forms in solitude. Macondo experienced many events that simply lead to the town downfall, one of them is the cataclysmic events that transpired. The cataclysmic events that happen in Macondo are the tools used for solitude. There are at least three plagues that have come to Macondo, the insomnia plague and the rain. The insomnia plague is where you lose memory and can’t sleep. The second is when it rains for almost five years in Macondo. The third is the wind where it destroyed the town at the end of the novel. This paper will explain on how these three plagues brought the downfall of Macondo and why it represents Gabriel main theme in Solitude.
The first plague is the Insomnia Plague which was introduced to Macondo by Rebecca who came as an orphan to Jose. The insomnia plague can be spread by simply being nearby the person infecting it. The plague is like a common cold which someone can be have it by being near the person infected. When the Indian women saw her not sleeping and saw that Rebecca had cat like symptoms such as her eyes were lightening up during the night, she was afraid and left the house the next morning. The other Indian stayed behind because she knew that there is no escape from the plague. From what Marquez says, “His sister stayed because her fatalistic conviction says that once it gets into a house then no one can escape the plague”(44). ..., Marquez is a brilliant writer that takes certain events from different elements and puts them in his book. The overall main theme is solitude which spreads throughout the book. Marquez uses a sequence of events such as the plagues in which represents a different form of solitude. Whether it is the loss of memory where not knowing anyone makes you isolated such as rebecca when she was first introduced. The second is the rain where it did not stop for almost five years after the massacre by the soldiers to the workers. The rain is a form of solitude because people within the town could not connect to the outside world and as such was isolated. These events made sure that the parchments happened when Aureliano deciphered the parchments thus enacting of one hundred years of solitude as not only was the town wiped out, he had no lineage no more thus was forever alone.
A law was made, saying that once someone was ill with the plague they were to stay in their house. Anyone who happened to live in the same house as the unfortunate soul was also locked in, with fear that they could spread the disease. Beggars were not allowed to wonder the streets at anytime, and were executed immediately for doing so without a given reason. All of these, although sensible ideas (apart from the execution..) would not contribute towards public health, as the disease was not contagious in the human community. It was in fact passed on from fleas living on black rats, but this knowledge had not yet been developed.
"Thus the first thing that plague brought to our town was exile."(p.71). The first exile Camus writes is the physical exile of a diseased town from the world, and consequently, the exile of the town's people from the kingdom of everyday. The particular torture of this exile is memory; once expelled from a kingdom, the kingdom ceases to exist, living on only as "a memory that serves no purpose... ha[s] a savor only of regret."(p.73). Thus the townspeople are haunted by memories of their distant loved ones and their interrupted lives, creating islands of their own exile- an exile intensified by years of monotonous selfish habit. "The truth is that everyone is bored, and devotes himself to cultivating habits."(p.4). The pea-counter is the ultimate representation of this exile; he is completely removed from the reality of man, measuring his life in the perpetual repetition of an absurd activity. Through the character of Rambert, Camus defines plague as precisely this selfish exile of habit, this doing "...the same thing over and over and over again..."(p.161).

Everyone waits for someone else to step in and take the lead so something dreadful can be prevented or stopped. What people still do not notice is that if everyone was to stand back and wait for others, who is going to be the one who decides to do something? People don’t care who gets hurt, as long as it’s not themselves, like Angela Vicario, while other try to reassure themselves by thinking that they did all that they could, like Colonel Lazaro Aponte and Clotilde Armenta. And finally, some people try to fight for something necessary, but lose track of what they set out for in the first place.

Lonleiness is a big theme in the book, most of the characters experience it in some way shape or form; and all of them have a way of channeling it. nevertheless, the only people whose lives really change change during the novel are the ones who make an effort to fight their struggle. Those who do nothing about it, stay lonely. Like in real life, if you dont fight a problem, it’ll never go away. The old Greek saying "God helps those who helps themselves" describes the esence of the novel very well because it displays the fact that maybe the only thing keeping us lonely is ourselves.
Style: The typical Magical- Realistic story of García Márquez placed in a familiar environment where supernatural things take place as if they were everyday occurrences. Main use of long and simple sentences with quite a lot of detail. "There were only a few faded hairs left on his bald skull and very few teeth in his mouth, and his pitiful condition of a drenched great-grandfather took away and sense of grandeur he might have had" (589).
The septicemic plague was transmitted in the same way as the bubonic plague. The septicemic plague was transmitted with direct contact with a flea bite. The only three hosts in which the disease could live in were in humans, rats, and fleas (Inspecta 1). Inside the rat flea, the bacteria Yersenia pestis multiply inside the flea which in turn, blocks the flea’s stomach causing it to be very hungry. As a result, the flea starts biting the host vigorously which in turn would spread the plague to the host. Since the bacterium is still blocking the flea’s stomach, the flea would still be hungry and therefore it would continue to bite other humans until it starves to death.

One Hundred Year of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia-Marquez projects itself among the most famous and ambitious works in the history of literature. Epic in scope, Marquez weaves autobiography, allegory and historical allusion to create a surprisingly coherent story line about his forebears, his descendants and ours.
It was a bubonic plague that came from Asia and spread by black rats infested with fleas. The plague spread like a wildfire because people who lived in high populated areas were living very close to each other and had no idea what was the cause of the disease or how to cure it. The signs of the “inevitable death” where blood from the nose, fever, aching and swellings big as an “apple” in the groin or under the armpits. From there the disease spread through the body in different directions and soon after it changed into black spots that appeared on the arms and thighs. Due to the lack of medical knowledge, no doctors manage to find a remedy. Furthermore a large number of people without any kind of medical experience tried to help the sick but most of them failed “...there was now a multitude both of men and of women who practiced without having received the slightest tincture of medical science - and, being in ignorance of its source, failed to apply the proper remedies…” (Boccaccio). In Gabriel Garcia Marquez's book “One Hundred Years of Solitude”, the characteristics of each family member resemble another. They may start differently, but their fates follow the same tragic conclusion. The Buendia men suffer from their own macho pride and recklessness. The women are subjected to the will of the men, and are burdened with tragedy that follows them. This book is locked in a time circle for 100 years, doomed to repeat the mistakes of their ancestors. The Buendia family all share unifying facts that tie them together creating their own solitude. Solitude. Examples are found of this idea throughout the one-hundred-year life of Macondo and the Buendia family. It is both an emotional and physical solitude. It is shown geographically, romantically, and individually. It always seems to be the intent of the characters to remain alone, but they have no control over it. To be alone, and forgotten, is their destiny.
