The literary device, author’s voice, is the individual writing style of an author. It is a combination of diction, punctuation, character development, dialogue, etc., within a given body of text. There are many examples of how author’s voice affects the meaning of a text in the classic book, Night, a book about the life and thoughts of a young Jewish boy going through the Holocaust, as well as in “A Spring Morning”, a short story about the results of having a kid while Germany is in control of Poland. These examples include: when the author is foreshadowing, when the author is writing about someone is being told to obey, and when the author is writing about a loved one dying.
The first time I noticed how the author’s voice affected the meaning of the text is when an author uses foreshadowing. This occurs in chapter 1 of Night, “Well, there you are, you see! What did we tell you? You wouldn’t believe us. There they are your Germans! What do you think of them? Where is their famous cruelty”(Wiesel 7)? This is a great example of how the meaning of the text is affected by author’s voice. The author is using rhetorical questions, questions that are asked solely to produce an effect or to make an assertion and not to elicit a reply. He also uses foreshadowing (to show or indicate beforehand) in order to help give us an idea of the meaning of the text. The meaning of the text in the quote is to show how the optimists of Sighet believed that the Germans were good and how they rubbed it in the face of the people that thought the Germans were bad and sinister. It is also to give us a hint at what the future holds. Another example of how author’s voice affects the meaning of a text while using foreshadowing is in the first paragraph of “A S...

...g away. He walked over slowly, and those few steps seemed endless. He bent down, picked up the child, stroked the tangle of blonde hair” (Fink 61). The author made the text feel slow, causing the meaning of the text to hit us deeper and to openly show us how cruel and evil people can be. The reaction to the death is sadness, which is much different than the reaction Elie has to his father’s death, which is relieve.
The literary device, author’s voice, affects the meaning of a text in almost everything you read. This is especially true for the classic book Night as well as the short story “ A Spring Morning”. Some of the examples of when text is affected by the author’s voice include: when the author is foreshadowing, when the author is writing about someone is being told to obey what another person is saying, and when the author is writing about a loved one dying.
Character voice is used in Craig Silvey’s novel Jasper Jones and James Roy’s series of short stories Town as a way of engaging the audience and making it an inclusive text for the reader. In both texts the author’s use of character voice paints a picture of the nature and feelings of the characters, such as; Lee’s infatuation with Briony in Town, Eliza’s ambitiousness and constant need for freedom in Jasper Jones. The character voice used for all the characters represents the personality, behaviors and traits of the individuals. It also allows the audience to see themselves as a member of the community that Town focuses on and a citizen of Corrigan, becauses of the author’s usage of specific, inclusive and descriptive language.
...bers that he has a father and he forgot about him in the mob. “I knew he was running out of strength, close to death, and yet I had abandoned him” (p.106). Elie feels guilty for leaving his father when he needed Elie the most. After he wakes up he goes looking for his father. He feels as if he is responsible for taking care of his father. Elie replaces his faith with obligation to his father to help keep him going thought out the holocaust.
Many times, when an author writes a story, he will use different techniques to influence the way that the reader absorbs the work. Writers use both paratactic style and syntactic style. These two styles contrast each other greatly, but on the same term, they greatly compliment one another. In the book The Things They Carried, O'Brien uses both of these styles. In this essay, syntactic and paratactic style will be examined in the story "Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong". Examples in the story will be examined and described according to the two styles of writing. The syntactic style will be focused on more intensely however, because of the way that it effects the sections of the story that will be discussed. It will also show that the historical context of the story effects the styles of writing.

To convey a sense of argument, imagery and perspective, authors use various types of language, syntax and vocabulary to achieve this. An extract from Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte, a soliloquy from Hamlet, by William Shakespeare and Ode to Autumn, by John Keats all have a number of striking similarities between them, as well as a few differences, which will be analysed to show.
...ow much more independent he has become. His reaction to his father's death also represents this loss of innocence: “I did not weep, and it pained me that I could not weep. But I was out of tears” (Wiesel 112). This scene reveals the fact that Elie has realized that there are many evils in the world. His lack of emotion and tears shows that he understands how bad the Nazis' actions are and how cruel the world can be. This realization ultimately represents his loss of innocence and maturation.
Dialogue is a technique used in literature that involves two or more people in a conversation within the writing. Dialogue is used when the author is showing a character’s personality, a conflict within the story or a back story for a character. Depending on the text is how the dialogue being used is given reason, if there is any dialogue at all. Through the analyzation of two texts, “All Over but the Shoutin’” and “F-16 Pilot Was Ready to Give Her Life on Sept. 11”, two different prime examples of dialogue are shown.
In The Author to her Book, the author’s tone changes multiple times throughout the story making it quite clear where she stands and how she wants the reader to feel about each sentence she writes. By analyzing the words and images Anne Bradstreet uses and depicts, it clear she is frustrated and annoyed about what is happening based on what the speaker says in the poem.

Authors of any genre have been known to use language to influence actions, ideas or emotions to the reader. Throughout this essay the following authors; Joseph Stalin, Ernest Hemingway and Franklin D Roosevelt will use various language devices in their works of literature, to influence their audience to act, to think, and to feel emotion regarding their subject matter.
The opinions of the narrator can be seen throughout the book. The readers saw a glimpse of the narrator’s opinions about the settings, situations and the characters. However, the narrator’s attitude throughout the book changes over time. In the beginning of the book, the readers got information about the narrator feeling guilt towards his writing career due to his Puritan ancestors. In the passage, the narrator has some judgmental attitude towards the Puritan community.
The language an author chooses to comprise the work he or she is creating can provide a deep look into his or her thoughts. For example, the writing style present in George Orwell’s 1984 expresses, not only the writer’s fears following his observations of the Second World War, but also the negative experiences with authority figures he had as a child. Furthermore, language can be utilized to identify specific faults with society. For instance, The Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut identifies the danger of nuclear war, especially in a society whose leaders are not concerned for the common man. However, the use of language to relay certain messages or ideas is not limited to fictional literature. In particular, the rhetoric present in legal documents,
...erary devices; Contrastingly, the second point of view is to become sympathetic with the characters and indulge in the culture of the text, which is most effective when used on foreign or historical stories. In addition, the author stresses the importance of irony as it is a profound literary device that is hard to find for some and usually brings about divine truth, the theme. He then brings various elements of previous chapters to demonstrate ironic situations such as showing betrayal followed by dining together which he has shown.
In Modernist literature, much like painting, there is experimentation with form: narration style, tone, plot line. Instead of having Kurtz tell his story, or Marlow recite the tale of his journey, the actual narrator in the Heart of Darkness is an unknown passenger on the Nellie.
