Literacy Narrative My earliest memory of being introduced to literacy is the time before elementary school, when my grandparents were reading me bedtime stories and books like Pinocchio and The Three Little Pigs. After that, I started going to school so reading and writing became part of my everyday life, and they still are. I cannot say that I am a big fan of writing and reading, like some people are. I only write when I have to, and my writing is always connected to school, however, I do not feel the same way about reading. In my free time, I like to read. I choose books which are easy going to read, books which are based on a movie or books that my friends told me to read. books. For example, my coach told me to read The Hard Hat. This book is based on a true story, it talks about a loyal, cheerful hard-working teammate who made an impact on the whole team, and school and the lessons we can learn from him. Many school essays, life experiences and readings of books have had an impact on my improvement and development of my literacy skills. In the beginning, in elementary and middle school the teacher gave us short stories and books that were easy to read like Heidi, so we can gain more knowledge about reading.
For homework, usually we had to write short paragraphs or essays on easy topics, which prepared us for the harder and more challenging literacy tasks in high school. When I got in high school, we started reading books like Hamlet and Crime and Punishment, which are far more complicated to understand than the books I read in the past. Now I am in college, and even though I have written a lot of essays, and I have read a lot of books, I am still improving and learning new things about reading and writing. writer/reader. Another thing which helped me improve as a writer/reader was my English as a Secondary Language course. The teacher was very challenging, he expected a lot from us. I learned a lot by being in his class that year, I improved my grammar and I was able to write better essays. He prepared me for the upcoming harder English classes I had to take in the future. However, I believe the transfer of coming from a non-speaking English country to the U.S, is the thing that has helped me the most. Besides reading and writing, I also communicate and share opinions with the people around by speaking English. In conclusion, based on my previous knowledge and previous experiences, I have concluded that it is lot easier for me when I have to write on a topic that is familiar and interesting to me, other than some monotonous topic in which I have no interest in.
I have the same problem with reading. If I like the book I enjoy reading it and I am able to finish it in a shorter time period. For example, it would be a lot easier for me to write an essay on The Hard Hat, because I can relate to this book and write about the lessons I learned from it. Another example is Iliad, the book I had to read in high school for my English class. Iliad tells us the story of the few weeks in the final year of the Trojan War. It is a great book about the suffering and loss of war, about family, friendship and love. I have always loved to read about Greek mythology, I love their myths and the great Greek poems like Homer and Aristotle. Therefore, I believe that is a lot easier for me to write on a topic I find interesting and challenging. This way, I am able to better understand the given assignment and go in depth with it. In addition, I can say that my life and all of the previous experiences I have had, every English course I have taken, every essay I have written has made me become the writer and reader I am today. I have developed a personal way of writing, I am able to think more deeply than before and make conclusions which are based on my personal opinions and point of
views.
My parents have always stressed the importance of reading. Throughout my whole life, they have motivated me to read and they have encouraged me to find books that I find interesting to read. Because of their encouragement, I am an avid reader today. When I was a child, just starting to enjoy reading I liked to read books that were fiction. Some of my favorite books to read as a child are series that I still love today and I think I still have every book in each series stored in my attic. They are The Boxcar Children, Junie B. Jones, and The Magic Tree House.
As time goes by, I noticed how reading and writing became one of my weaknesses. Having an assignment readings and writing an essay about it was one of the things I don’t like doing. I am not sure if there are any valid reason on why I don’t like it but all I know is there is always a point where I end up getting stuck because I do not know what else to say. Also, reading gets deeper and some of the words are hard to understand especially when some of the readings use metaphors. However, in every essay I turned in, I always look forward on all of my teacher’s comments because I always want to know what else I am missing, what else to say, and how to improve it. I guess in this case, Sherman Alexie and I are opposite towards our view on writing but we are the alike on the view of learning and improving.
Growing up in a bilingual household, I have struggled with many things especially reading and writing. Reading and writing have never been my strongest points. The first struggle that I can recall, is when I was about six or seven years old. I was beginning my education at Edu-Prize Charter School. I was a cute little kid, in the first grade, just like everybody else. But in the middle of the school year, my mom told me that my great, great aunt, who lived in China, was getting really sick and old. So if I wanted to meet her, it had to be now. Being a little kid, I didn’t quite understand why she couldn’t just go see the doctor, take some medication, or let time heal her. Unfortunately, now I know it was my mom’s way of saying that she was dying. My parents made the decision that it was probably the best way for me to understand my Chinese culture, along with meeting my relatives on my mother’s side of the family. Developing as a writer is an important skill you need for the rest of your life. My papers have not been the greatest but they do reflect me as a writer. I chose to revise the works that I thought I worked hard on and did my best to get my point across in a neat and consistent manner. The papers I chose were the literacy narrative, the synthesis essay, and the argument essay. I thought these papers really reflected how I have grown as a writer and developed better writing skills.
Narrative research is a qualitative methodological approach in research (Bedford & Landry, 2010. Since the early 1980s, narrative inquiry has been emerging in regards to individual life stories. Storytelling is closely related to psychoanalytic tradition. Narrative research, consist of a multiple of approaches, that are apart of social constructionism, which is guided by the philosophical assumptions of an interpretive constructivist paradigm (Patsiopoulos & Buchanan, 2011). Through this qualitative method researchers are able to explore and obtain an understanding about individuals through specific data gathered through interviews.
Throughout my childhood, the idea of having a college education was greatly stressed. As a result, it was my duty as the next generational child, to excel in my studies and achieve a life of prosperity and success. Learning became the basic foundation of my growth. Therefore, my youth was overtaken by many hours spent reading and writing what was known to be correct "Standard" English. I first found this to be a great shortcoming, but as I grew older, I began to realize the many rewards acquired by having the ability to be literate.
It was finally time to head to gym class in the afternoon where we were instructed to take part of a physical test. This test would determine how fit or unfit we are based on a system that was implemented by those with greater authority, on which concluded that it was on such a scale society should be based on. My literacy journey began long before I had actually learned how to read or write. While recently going through baby pictures with my mother, we came across a photo of my father and I book shopping on the Logos boat, a boat that would come to my island every year that was filled with books for our purchasing. As a child, I have always been fond of reading books. My mother would read to me every single night before I went to bed and sometimes throughout the day. It was the most exciting time of the day when she would open the cabinet, with what seemed to be hundreds of feet tall, of endless books to choose from. When she read to me, I wanted nothing more than to read just like her. Together, we worked on reading every chance we had. Eventually I got better at reading alone and could not put a book down. Instead of playing outside with my brothers during the Summer, I would stay inside in complete silence and just read. I remember going to the library with my mom on Saturdays, and staying the entire day. I looked forward to it each and every week.
I was born in Mexico and came to California at age 4. I lived in many places such as San Jose and Madera but ended up living in Huron. I started at age 6 in kindergarten. Everything went well until second grade. The reading got harder and so did the spelling. The teacher wouldn't really help me, she would just continue class as usual. I started to not do my homework and not work in class. It wasn't that I didn't want to do it, I did want to but the problem was that I didn't know how to do it. I had no one at home that could help me due to everyone being Mexican and didn't know any English at all. At the end they sent me to a DSPS program.
The Digital Literacy Narrative allowed the author a chance to explain a story through reading with personal visual aid. The story that I choose was from my childhood and expands into my adulthood with my own daughter Madilyn May Sposkoski. The audience that I wanted to speak to were my classmates, Professora Fox and the people that would later read my story in an archive or hopefully the “Digital Archive of Literacy Narratives” (The Ohio State University of Libraries , 2016). I used to have to take these tests about all the books I would read in school and I would always ace them all. I knew that reading was something I liked because I was always very intrigued by it. Also in middle school I found my true writing voice. I remember taking a creative writing class in six grade and I was always the student who wrote more than what was expected for my writing assignments. I would write stories about things such as my friends and the experiences that I had in school. Sometimes I would even write my own plays and in my plays the characters would be people in family and people from school. I would always try to make the plot super interesting in my plays. One time I wrote a play about my brothers and me traveling to space and finding aliens. Overall, I really fell in love with literacy throughout my middle school years because I was able to read books more at an advance level and I also was able to write more intense stories. While I believe every child is a reader, I do not believe every child will be enthralled with reading all the time. All students have the capability to read and enjoy reading, but just like any other hobby, interest will vary from student to student. The students in my classroom will be encouraged in their reading, be provided with choice, taught how books can take you into another world but, my students will not be forced to read. This paper will illustrate my philosophy of reading through the theories I relate to, the way I want to implement reading and writing curriculum, and the methods I will use motivate my students to read and help them become literate.
To say I dislike reading and writing is an understatement. From the time I was a young student in elementary school to who I am today, English has always been my least favorite academic discipline. The required assigned readings have failed to catch my attention and writing is a rather boring process for me. To me a book is an outdated form of entertainment that requires a significant amount of time and concentration, and writing as a chore that I dislike doing.
There are many different types of events that shape who we are as writers and how we view literacy. Reading and writing is viewed as a chore among a number of people because of bad experiences they had when they were first starting to read and write. In my experience reading and writing has always been something to rejoice, not renounce, and that is because I have had positive memories about them.
